[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2061257] Re: After 24.04 upgrade, many graphical app failures under Wayland; no issues with Xorg

2024-04-14 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I also tried removing the Mesa Vulkan driver and set `export
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=i965`. That gets rid of the warning message but I
still get a hang with Vivaldi and nextcloud-desktop still does not work.

Title:
After 24.04 upgrade, many graphical app failures under Wayland; no
  issues with Xorg

Status in wayland package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Many applications seem to fail under a Wayland session that work correctly
with an Xorg session. E.g.
  - The nextcloud client app fails to contact the server and functions in the
app will not launch with Wayland while they work perfectly in Xorg
  - The Vivaldi browser exits with: MESA-INTEL: warning: Haswell Vulkan support
is incomplete
libva error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so init failed. It
works correctly under Xorg.
  - The Slack app works correct in Xorg not in Wayland.
  - The Firefox snap works fine in both.

I assume that these are related? Esp. that latter suggests to me that
  there is some library problem?

Thanks. Sounds similar. My nautilus and gnome-control center do work
strangely enough. But the more clues the better.

I tried the same upgrade and test on an old Sandy Bridge laptop.
Everything works as expected there. So a Haswell issue perhaps?

Bug description:

I should also mention: this was an upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04 and all
of the apps worked correctly in 23.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2061257] [NEW] Many app failures under Wayland; no issues with Xorg

2024-04-13 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

Many applications seem to fail under a Wayland session that work correctly with
an Xorg session. E.g.
- The nextcloud client app fails to contact the server and functions in the app
will not launch with Wayland while they work perfectly in Xorg
- The Vivaldi browser exits with: MESA-INTEL: warning: Haswell Vulkan support
is incomplete
libva error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/iHD_drv_video.so init failed. It
works correctly under Xorg.
- The Slack app works correct in Xorg not in Wayland.
- The Firefox snap works fine in both.

I assume that these are related? Esp. that latter suggests to me that
there is some library problem?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze when gnome-shell logs "Removing a network device that was not added"

2022-10-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I have the same problem on 2 installs out of 3. And no "Removing a
network device that was not added" in /var/log/syslog.

I also found that the problem does not seem to occur on Xorg, only on
Wayland.

And I also found that the work around is to go to a console and then
back using (e.g.) ctrl-alt-F1 then ctrl-alt-F2.

Title:
Temporary screen freeze when gnome-shell logs "Removing a network
  device that was not added"

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  As first mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1769981/comments/25 , I've been observing an issue when
unlocking my computer (usually from a screen lock state, not
hibernation/sleep) where after entering the first few characters of my
password the screen freezes for 10-20 seconds before I can do any type
  of input (mouse, touch, keyboard).

I've also seen it happen when having touch / gesture input switch
between displaying the user name and the password field - where the
screen can get stuck in the animation in an interstitial state for a
  number of seconds.

I've largely been noticing this since upgrading from Ubuntu 21.10 to
22.04. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to file an
  issue for.

  So far I've tried:
  - Disabling the 'blur my shell' extension - still encountered the issue again
eventually.
  - Looking for anything associated with this in /var/crash - couldn't find
anything.
  - Looking for anything associated at errors.ubuntu.com for my id.

  What I may eventually try:
  - Seeing if this may depend on having too many browser tabs / apps open.
Currently not in a position to do this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1288655] Re: Terminal height shrinks - repeatedly restored shorter than the previous height

2022-09-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Another surprising observation: Wayland seems to work just fine for me,
it's only X11 that has the maximization shrinking bug. 'headerbar' can
be true or false on Wayland with 22.04. I tried it on two different
installs with the same behavior.

Okay then. I guess I'll use Wayland. I liked to have the restart
feature which Wayland doens't have, but I think I'd rather not have this
gnome-terminal bug more than 'r'.

  3. Maximize the window (by clicking on the maximize button, or double
clicking the title bar, or dragging the window up to the panel)

@peterx14 I did a few more experiments. One needs a new gnome
session altogether for the 'headerbar' false change to work. I tried
this a few times to confirm. Just killing all the terminals is not
enough. However, when I login/out or kill gnome-session to restart the
session manager, the problem is fixed. The side effect is that one loses
all the nice gnome-terminal decoration (hamburger menu, find button,
etc.). Oh well. Take your choice.

  3. Maximize the window (by clicking on the maximize button, or double
clicking the title bar, or dragging the window up to the panel)
  4. Do the same again to un-maximize the window

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1288655] Re: Terminal height shrinks - repeatedly restored shorter than the previous height

2022-09-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Hm, perhaps I misremembered the tweak. I do recall that 22.04 did not
work initially. I applied the dconf menu setting and it started to
work. I reset the dconf legacy menu setting just now and it still works
(i.e. no shrinking after maximization). So I'm mystified . . .

2022-09-22 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
The bug disappeared for some old installs but not all. For those that
still had the bug, the following seemed to fix the problem:

dconf write /org/gnome/terminal/legacy/headerbar '@mb false'

@peterx14 maybe that would help in your case as well?

I can confirm, and this has been irritating me for years.

I suggest using 'terminator' as a work around.

xorg.conf has been replaced by the rules in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.
You can see if there is some older cruft in there.

After an upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04, I noticed that all gnome windows

incorrectly assumes that my graphics has no acceleration, when in fact
  it does: it's a i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Intel integrated graphics
  (i915 driver).

I've tried this with and without the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
(a.k.a. Intel driver) with the same behavior.

The output of gnome-session-check-accelerated is: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0,
256 bits) however the system should have DRM 2.0 capability.

GL checks (e.g. glxinfo, glxgears produce the expected output from a
  working DRM system).

mesa-utils and mesa-utils-extra are both installed.

I can't find a work around. Perhaps there is something wrong with my
  install/upgrade?

Everything else works fine, although the graphical transitions are no
longer smooth. But it would be nice to restore the expected behavior.

2018-05-22 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
If you want to try that, you can grab a more recent kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ but I doubt that this
will fix your issue. I'd bet on a configuration thing, but not sure
what. You don't, by any chance, have a custom xorg.conf (in /etc/X11
or /usr/share/X11)? I think that working under Wayland but not Xorg is
an important clue.

I look a quick look at your posted data. It does seem odd that your
system starts out configuring the drm and then uses fb. Do you have
anything custom on your boot line, like some video parameters? E.g.
'cat /proc/cmdline'. More grabbing at straws.

Well, this sounds like a different problem. The problem I reported was
very clearly the result of an incomplete package upgrade/removal
resulting in a failed test for unity compatibility leading to setting
that environment variable for software gl.

You might consider opening an new bug report with a complete system
info. E.g. you didn't report your video chipset, but I have heard that
there are nuances with nvidia.

incorrectly assumes that my graphics has no acceleration, when in fact
  it does: it's a i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Intel integrated graphics

I have attached the log of 'journalctl -b0'

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768610] Re: No acceleration after upgrading to 18.04: gnome-session-check-accelerated incorrectly picks llvmpipe

2018-05-21 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Emiliano: I'm grabbing at straws, but try checking for other files in
'/etc/X11/Xsession.d/' that might be setting 'export
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1' in the environment. E.g. 'grep -H LIBGL
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/*'

2018-05-21 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I'm not an expert, but you might want to see if you can gain some
insight from the output of 'journalctl -b0'.

E.g. is your system using the framebuffer driver "fbcon: xxx" or "[drm]
..." during boot up?

In the 'journalctl -b0' output I posted above, you can see that it's
using the frame buffer. That is what lead me to track down system
configuration issues.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768610] Re: No acceleration after upgrading to 18.04: gnome-session-check-accelerated incorrectly picks llvmpipe

2018-05-02 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I have figured out the problem: the installer removed nux-tools, left
over from unity, but did not purge it. This left a start up script in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d which interfered with gnome. Purged that and the
problem was gone.

So this is a dependency bug in the nux-tools package (or perhaps some
mistakenly identified changed file which turned into evil cruft). Sigh.
Took me a long time to find this.

I continue to see this problem on a daily basis, often after a resume
from suspend, I am not running Wayland, and this crashes my
gnome-session half the time, so something there is some confusion/bug
somewhere.  This morning's crash resulted in message from xorg-server so
I let apport file a bug against that package too (#1760123).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1730093] Re: Gnome suspends or blanks external monitor when laptop is docked

2017-11-07 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I refiled the bug at bugzilla.gnome.org as bug 790040.

The link is:  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=790040

I'm really surprised that there are not more complaints about this.  To
be fair, the dock+external monitor setup has NOT worked perfectly in any
release Ubuntu release, including 16.04.  Although, before 17.10,
trouble only arose when moving the laptop between docks with different
monitors, so it was tolerable.

I sure hope this can be fixed.  I suppose I could cook up some sort of
udev script to handle dock changes for my situation but that is horrible
kludge, not a fix.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1730093] Re: Gnome suspends or blanks external monitor when laptop is docked

2017-11-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Just to make sure, I again repeated the sequence of events outlined
above on the stock 17.10 kernel:

Linux magpie 4.13.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 11 18:35:14 UTC
2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The behavior is identical to that reported above.

One minor elaboration: when I open the control panel->Devices->Displays
with the lid action set to "ignore", I have to toggle the external
monitor, even if it is currently selected, in order to prevent the lid
close from blanking the display.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1727770] [NEW] wayland does not have logic for a Lenovo laptop on the dock

2017-10-26 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo T440s (haswell) and an ultradock with external monitor.

If I resume on the dock, wayland seems to recognize the lid as closed
and suspends. The work around is to (1) open the lid, bring up the
display control tab and switch to single monitor, choose the external
one (on the DP); and (3) apply. Then I can close the lid.

The laptop will boot correctly on the dock with the lid closed.

I tried changing the dconf parameter org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.power to 'nothing' but that doesn't seem to matter.

Obviously, this is not a critical issue, but it sure is annoying. This
should "just work".

Yes, no problem with GNOME on Xorg. Thanks for the heads up.

I found another problem with Wayland handling the dock + laptop lid that
works correctly with Xorg. Just trying to help. Not sure what package
to file a bug on, do you? Would that be xwayland?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1725698] [NEW] Size decreases when cycling between full-screen mode using F11

2017-10-21 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

Launch an gnome-terminal and cycle between full screen and normal by
pressing F11 twice. The original size of the terminal is not restored.
Doing this multiple times, the window continues to shrink.

This did not occur on 17.04 or earlier. I use this regularly as part of
my workflow. Obviously, this is a minor issue, but it sure is annoying.

This bug does not exist in terminator FWIW. I'd prefer not to switch to
terminator, however.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1582414] Re: No HDMI audio on Lenovo pro dock with T440s

2017-01-31 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
The symptoms and behavior are nearly the same, so the issue seems
closely related, if not the same. However, the report is for different
hardware and dock (UltraDock rather than OneLink dock although both
Haswell). But, without doing the back port of Dave Airlie's patches to
4.9.x, 4.10.x or 4.4.0, it's hard to know for certain. I'd suggest
keeping the bug open if only to document the breadth of the problem.

If I get a chance, I may try the backport myself, but I don't have time
right now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1582414] Re: No HDMI audio on Lenovo pro dock with T440s

2016-09-20 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Thanks Luke.

I tried it but, sorry to report, the results are the same: pavucontrol
claims that the HDMI is unplugged.

I also checked with "aplay -D" commands and none of the HDMI devices
detected will play. The internal audio and a USB device are detected
and work fine.

I also tried 14.04.2, which is kernel 3.16.0-30, and that also detected
the HDMI/DP.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1582414] Re: No HDMI audio on Lenovo pro dock with T440s

2016-06-03 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Thanks.

Booted with the latest daily, which is kernel 4.4.0, and it does not
detect HDMI/DisplayPort on the ThinkPad ultra dock.

Also, from the old-releases repo, I downloaded the 14.04.1 iso running
kernel 3.13.0-32, and that one DOES detect the HDMI/DisplayPort.

Does this issue have to do with MST support in kernel 4.4? The 3.13 in
14.04 did not have MST support.

Title:
No HDMI audio on Lenovo pro dock with T440s

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
pavucontrol shows Display Port/HDMI output as "(unplugged)" and cannot
be chosen as a sink. This is only a problem with the dock; audio
works when plugging HDMI through the laptop's DP input.

The audio did work with the dock in Ubuntu 14.04. Did something in
jack detection change? Anyway, my work around is to plug a 3.4mm
audio cable into the dock and power the speakers that way, but it
would be nice to use the HDMI audio again.

I would love to have a work around. I've attached the output from
alsa-info.sh, just in case this is useful.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1314361] [NEW] [20ARA0S100, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2014-04-29 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

Audio works on internal speakers and headphones using card 1 (HDA Intel
PCH). But pavucontrol will let me choose HDMI even though it appears
under aplay -l and under /proc/asound things look ok to me.

Also note: this is a laptop on a Thinkpad Ultradock with the HDMI
plugged into the dock. I note that alsa driver does not detect the
audio line out on the dock and there is no way to play through that
channel. I'm not sure that this is related, but perhaps has to do with
some lack of support for the dock?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1314361] Re: [20ARA0S100, Intel Haswell HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2014-04-29 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I meant to say: pavucontrol will NOT let me choose HDMI as output.
Sounds can not be routed to HDMI. I tried aplay -D some_sound.wav for
all channels in the aplay -l list. Only PCH works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1193873] [NEW] GPU hang on mesa blorp operation

2013-06-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

This began happening with 13.04 upgrade. I tried xorg-edgers repository
but this made matters worse. I reported the GPU hang to the kernel
folks upstream. Based on the i915_error_text, they report that my hangs
are due to mesa blorp operations.

The bug causes a GPU hang which requires the windowing system to be
restarted.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1193873] Re: GPU hang on mesa blorp operation

2013-06-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
i915_error_state attached.

Additional note, the default 13.04 kernel causes so many GPU hangs, it
is unusable (or at least, to frustrating to use). 3.9.6 and 3.10.rc6
are much better.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1191124] [NEW] i915 hangcheck

2013-06-14 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

This report is related to a number of i915 GPU hang reports since kernel
3.8.x. The DRM in the official kernel hangs so often that it is
unusble.

The hang is easily reproduced by pushing the rendering system very hard.
E.g. I can always make the hang within a few minutes by starting three
instances of glxgears and then trying to view a youtube video full
screen at HD resolution.

I have found that the best solution so far is the latest bleeding edge
kernels. Hence, I am opening a new report with a kernel from the intel
testing series with the hope that this gets passed upstream and we get
this bug resolved.

I posted additional results of tests to bug #1140716 but this seems to
have moved beyond that now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184382] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2013-05-26 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Public bug reported:

These GPU hangs seem to occur when using firefox along with other
applications. Although it is not reproducible, or at least, I have not
been able to find a recipe for introducing it.

In this case, the GPU recovered. In many cases it does not.

The relevant lines from the syslog seem to be:

[drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[100824.307518] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in
/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state

I have attached the i915 error state.

Hi,

Sorry, I've been traveling.

Go to: Edit-Preferences-Advanced and toggle off Enable Global Search
and Indexer.
Restart and see if that helps the endless polling. If so, you can try to

rm global-messages-db.*

in your .thunderbird/*.default dir and then toggle on Enable Global
Search and Indexer
which will initiate and index rebuild.

Solved the problem for me.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 984801] Re: Thunderbird 11 has stupidly high idle CPU usage

2012-05-01 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I've been having the same problem. But only on one of my machines. So,
on a hunch, I quit thunderbird, deleted the global-messages-db.sqlite,
relaunched thunderbird and let it reindex from scratch. After some
minutes, the indexing was finished and the cpu usage by thunderbird
returned to zero. Everything seems fine now.

Hope this might work for you??

I'm going to guess that there is some bug that promotes a race condition
under rare circumstances, either on upgrade or otherwise.

On 04/30/2012 09:54 PM, Vex Mage wrote:
To be clear. Mozilla's reindexing code causes stupidly high CPU usage
and effects pretty much all Ubuntu users who upgrade Thunderbird and
this period of unusable desktop experience is ok because it only happens
once? I think Thunderbird should not make the assumption that it's the
only app using the cpu. I disagree with categorizing this bug as
 invalid.

This is APPALLING for anyone on a laptop where power consumption (and
hence battery life) is directly related to CPU use!

What is Thunderbird doing with all of the CPU cycles?

I tried running it in safe mode, and have already disabled any plugins
but to no improvement. I also tried running it via strace and it spews

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 992326] Re: Thunderbird polls continuously, using an entire core

2012-04-30 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
More info:

I disabled the global indexing and the enless spinning stopped.

I then removed the global index sqlite databases, restarted thunderbird
and re-enabled the global indexing.

After rebuilding the index, all was well.

So in the end, I'm not sure if this was an event (i.e. corrupted
database), an incompatibility between two versions of thunderbird, or a
migration bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 841541] Re: num lock is on warning remains even after num lock is turned off

2011-11-11 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Regarding Comment #6: I can confirm that changing the BIOS setting on
numlock behavior from independent to synchronized does indeed solve
the problem here.

Bug description:
  Version: 3.1.5-0ubuntu6
  Release: 11.10

After fiddling with Num Lock, I noticed that the lock window claimed
it was still enabled, and yet it is not.

  Sequence of events:
  * Turn on Num Lock.
  * Lock the screen. (On a ThinkPad, I do this by pressing Fn+F2. Whatever
option it is that means lock the screen immediately, I have it turned on.)
  * Tap a key to bring up the screen-locked/enter-password dialog.
  * Observe the warning.
  * Turn off Num Lock.
  * Observe the warning is still there.
  * Successfully unlock the screen.
  * Lock the screen again.
  * Observe the warning is still there.
  * [Optional] Unlock the screen. File a bug against gnome-screensaver.

Not related to bug #835649, which concerns showing the warning when
Num Lock is enabled but not otherwise problematic, e.g. when using a
full-size (i.e. has lots of extra keys) keyboard.
