  This key combination stopped working since a week, I have done no
  upgrades/installs wrt to gnome-terminal/gnome package.

  What I've tried:
  1. Installed few more terminals to check if it works in other..
  tty = Works! hence alt+d keys are okey.
  Konsole = Works.
  Guake = Does NOT work (gnome based terminal??)
  2. It works on my friend's machines.
  3. I've tried un/checking terminal -> Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts. Enable menu
access/shortcuts. Not worked!
  4. Saw any key bindings present. Nothing interesting.

  Who is eating alt?

  I will respond to the introspective debug if necessary.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1044485] Re: lightdm-set-defaults is undocumented in lightdm man page

2013-03-07 Thread Matt Fischer
Hi Jukka,

Fixes for manpages are generally not considered severe enough to be
worth porting back to a LTS like 12.04. Since I fixed this in November
(after 12.10), it will be in 13.04, the release that comes out in a
couple months. I believe that lightdm-set-defaults is fairly self-
documenting, just run it without arguments if you're on an older
version.

  lightdm-set-defaults is undocumented in lightdm man page

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  first off, this applies to 12.10 and 12.04 and possibly earlier
  versions.

  secondly, in trying to figure out how to change some relatively simple
  things, i've found people suggesting an edit to lightdm.conf, which
  works, but clearly lightdm-set-defaults is a much better and user
  friendly way to do this. the lack of any reference to what the
  possible options are in the lightdm.conf versus the help page (-h) in
  lightdm-set-defaults is an example of this. however, there is no
  reference to it in the lightdm man page. this would be a simple fix.

  it would also help to throw it into a directory that is in the $PATH
  or set the directory it's installed in as part of the $PATH at
  install, but perhaps i should create a different bug for this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1136542] [NEW] g_unix_mount_points_get() won't work in a LXC container unless /etc/fstab is set

2013-02-28 Thread Matt Fischer
Public bug reported:

Seen on several versions of glib2 and Ubuntu:
12.10 - amd64
libglib2.0-0:amd64  2.34.1-1ubuntu1

12.04 armhf
libglib2.0-0  2.32.3-0ubuntu1

g_unix_mount_points_get() returns an empty list when run inside an LXC
container. I think this is because it reads /etc/fstab to gather mount
info instead of reading /proc/mounts. This means that for LXC
containers, it will fail using a default container, returning no mount
points. There are other cases where fstab is neither complete up to date
or accurate and I think that reading mounts would make more sense. Below
is a repro case.

/* gcc -g -ggdb -o dt dt.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs glib-2.0
libgtop-2.0 gio-2.0 gio-unix-2.0` */

/* g_unix_mount_points_get() - returns empty set inside a container */

#include
#include
#include
#include
#include

int main(void) {
  GList*points;
  GList*p;
  points = g_unix_mount_points_get (NULL);
  if (points == NULL) {
  printf("no mounts found!");
  }
  for (p = points; p != NULL; p = p->next)
{
  GUnixMountEntry *mount = p->data;
  const char *mount_path;

  mount_path = g_unix_mount_get_mount_path (mount);
  printf("Found a mount: %s\n", mount_path);
}

Title:
  lightdm accepts weak password although pam says BAD PASSWORD

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Even if libpam-cracklib installed, lightdm accepts too short password.
  This might be a security issue because user can ignore password policy
defined by root.

  How to reproduce:

   1. install libpam-cracklib
   2. create "user1" with password "foo"
   3. expire user1's password by root
  $ sudo passwd -e user1
   4. try to login as user1 on lightdm with password "foo"
   5. get "You are required to change password" message
  and be prompted to input new password

  Expected results:
if you input too short password like "bar" in the box,
then lightdm rejects it and re-prompt to type stronger password.

  Actual results:
if you input too short password like "bar" in the box twice,
then lightdm accept it and change password with too short one
although saying that "BAD PASSWORD: it is WAY too short" and "BAD PASSWORD:
is too simple"

  NOTE:
   passwd command with user privilege, properly reject too short password like
below:

   $ passwd
  (current) UNIX password: #<- type "foo
  New password: #<- type "bar"
  BAD PASSWORD: it is WAY too short
  New password: #<- type "bar"
  BAD PASSWORD: it is WAY too short
  New password: #<- type "bar"
  BAD PASSWORD: it is WAY too short
  passwd: Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service
  passwd: password unchanged
  Changing password for user1.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1127743] Re: seek bar issues when playing m4a

2013-02-16 Thread Matt Fischer
David,

I don't think it's a duplicate because that bug is about a file that's
not fully downloaded.

Title:
  seek bar issues when playing m4a

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Play A State of Trance podcast m4a file. Notice that seek bar indicates
that we are a few minutes into the song but it's actually playing the beginning.
  2. Try to seek halfway through the song. Audio that starts playing is from
halfway through the song but the seek bar jumps further in the song.
  3. Press pause. Rhythmbox pauses.
  4. Press play. Rhythmbox doesn't play.

  Even though the song I'm playing is from a podcast it's not specific
  to the podcast area of rhythmbox. I can reproduce the issue when
  copying the file to my normal library. See attached screenshot.

  It does seem to be related to specific types of m4a files, though. I
  have others that don't reproduce the issue.

 - install the driver from https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce

Title:
  DHCP over wireless stopped working

Status in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

  I have a Dell Vostro 3700 notebook running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and a Netgear
FWG114P WLAN router which I bought 2005.
  Since the update on Sunday 27. January 2013 the NetworkManager fails to
connect to my WLAN Router.

  The Indicator applet shows all available wireless networks, but the
  NetworkManager fails to establish the connection. Due to the fact that
  I see the available networks I think the WLAN driver itself works
  fine. It seems to be a DHCP problem, but I have no idead how to solve
  it.

  If I boot from an Ubuntu 12.04 USB stick which I created about 1 year
  ago WLAN works fine. Thus it's not a hardware problem.

  Please could you give me some hints how to solve this problem.

  Thanks & Best regards,

  Franz Hollerer

  Steps to reproduce:
  - Open a file
  - Go to File > Export bitmap...
  - Choose Unit: cm
  - Export
  - Open PNG image with an image viewer

  As you can see if you follow these steps, the image size is mm, not

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1095492] Re: Filenames are not fully displayed

2013-01-28 Thread Matt Fischer
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail. It is
also fixed in Quantal. I found that the fix was introduced in a version
rhythmbox (2.97-1) or later. It was fixed upstream in debian at that
time.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in
previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU
Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1086431] Re: nautilus shows wrong filesize

2013-01-20 Thread Matt Fischer
This is not a bug, it is a misunderstanding of units. The issue is that
you are comparing MB to M. MB is 1000*1000*1000, while M is
1024*1024*1024. For example, this file is shown with ls -alh on my
system:

268M Jan 19 21:13 my_pix.zip
281015429 Jan 19 21:13 my_pix.zip

Nautilus shows it in MB, which is simply the number of bytes above
divided by 1,000,000, aka 281.0 MB.

Bug description:
  when a user opens Nautilus and is present in his/her "user-folder,"
  Nautilus label's the user-folder as "Home" both in the Side-Pane and
  in the Toolbar. This should be considered a bug!

  It is very confusing to ubuntu users (especially new users and non-
  sophisticated computer users). The user is in his/her "user-folder,"
  yet it is labeled "Home" in the Side-Pane and Toolbar. Making matters
  worse, there is a real Home folder so users see "home Home" in the
  Toolbar, which causes them to constantly get confused about which
  folder they are in. The only way to get an accurate display of
  location is to us the "location-entry" setting in the Toolbar (e.g.,
  type Ctrl+L).

  the Side-Pane should show:
  Computer
  User-folder-name
  Desktop
  Documents
  ...

  When user is in the Documents folder, instead of the top Nautilus
  Toolbar showing "home Home Documents" it should show "home user-
  folder-name Documents"

  The actual es_MX configuration file copies the es_ES number

  I manually edited my file and the problem was solved:

  /usr/share/i18n/locales/es_MX

  LC_NUMERIC

  (+)thousands_sep""
  (+)grouping 3;3

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 924496] Re: Crash after "Deleting torrent and files"

2013-01-17 Thread Matt Fischer
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail. I have
also verified that It is also fixed in Ubuntu 12.10. I think this fix
appears in 2.33-1 or later, so I think 12.04 Precise would also have
this fix. If you can reproduce it in 12.04, please reopen this bug and
follow the SRU steps below.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do
steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a
developer's attention.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 309884] Re: deleting a module that is in use locks up terminal

2012-12-22 Thread Matt Fischer
I've been unable to determine if this is really fixed or not as there's
no changelog evidence, regardless, I cannot repro it and jaunty is no
longer supported, so I'm invalidating.

  deleting a module that is in use locks up terminal

Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

  I tried to delete a module but forgot to rmmod it first. The instance
  of gnome-terminal I was using became unresponsive. I opened up
  another terminal and tried to kill -9 the frozen bash process; this
  caused the second terminal to freeze as well. Then I used xkill to
  kill both terminals--it seemed to work, but I could not open a new
  terminal after that. Also, I could no longer switch to a tty shell
  using Ctrl-Alt-Fkey. I tried to reboot at this point, and it reported
  that "Terminal" was not responding. The reboot process froze before X
  could be shut down.

  Now, I know what you're thinking; I shouldn't try to delete a module
  that's in use. It was an accident, but it should have resulted in an
  error message rather than rendering bash useless and requiring a hard
  reboot.

  Ubuntu 8.10
  gnome-terminal 2.24.1.1-0ubuntu1
  The module I tried to delete was gspca_ov511.ko.

2012-12-17 Thread Matt Fischer
After discussing this with Micahg, we'll just wait and pull this from
debian. There are no Ubuntu changes required to build 2.75 and so
merging in from Debian would be simpler.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1088352] Re: gnome-terminal leaks memory on startup after call to g_listenv

2012-12-09 Thread Matt Fischer
Here's a fix for the issue (attached). I looked upstream and while the
issue exists in 3.6.1 it doesn't exist in trunk, so I don't think it
needs to go upstream.

Valgrind summary after applying my fix:
==23336== LEAK SUMMARY:
==23336==definitely lost: 0 bytes in 0 blocks

The patch is pretty simple, just free the list that g_listenv() creates.

** Patch added: "fixes the memory leak"

2012-11-24 Thread Matt Fischer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 806606 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/806606

Michael,

Assuming I'm translating this correctly, this issue was fixed in 12.04,
as shown in this bug: #806606.

You can use my PPA version if you don't want to upgrade, from the bug
comment in 806606:

I have a proposed fix for this in my PPA: ppa:mfisch/gnome-nettool

Directions on how to add it and what it fixes are on the PPA page:
https://launchpad.net/~mfisch/+archive/gnome-nettool

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 893851] Re: Brightness adjustment gauge in gnome-control-center screen not responding to brightness hot-keys

To compile that test code I posted:

gcc dbus-test.c -o dbus-test `pkg-config --libs --cflags gio-2.0
gtk+-3.0 dbus-glib-1 dbus-1`

Then ./dbus_test to run it.

  Using brightness hotkeys currently changes brightness correctly, but such
changes fail to be visible in the gnome-control-center UI; which leads to
confusion and unpredictable behavior if the brightness is then adjusted using
UI in the same session.

  [Test Case]
  1) Open gnome-control-center (power indicator -> System Settings...)
  2) Switch to "Brightness and Lock"
  3) Use the brightness hotkeys to adjust screen brightness
  4) Observe slider behavior.

  Without the patch the slider should not move.
  With the patch, slider should follow brightness adjustments done via hot keys.

  [Regression Potential]
  Minimal risk. The slider does not currently follow key brightness
adjustments. Possible regression scenarios could include the slider no longer
responding or changing brightness when interacting with it; or more confusion
in mixing up hot key and slider brightness adjustments.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 893851] Re: Brightness adjustment gauge in gnome-control-center screen not responding to brightness hot-keys

2012-11-15 Thread Matt Fischer
This is still broken in Q as I stated before, although it appears to be
fixed in Gnome 3.4 and 3.6 trunks.

Here are all my notes:

1) The signal "Changed" is coming from g-s-d when the brightness hotkeys
are pressed:

$ dbus-monitor --session  "type='signal',sender='org.gnome.SettingsDaemon'"
In Quantal:
signal sender=:1.6 -> dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon serial=397
path=/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power;
interface=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen; member=Changed

On Precise, we see the same signal:
signal sender=:1.17 -> dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon serial=8416
path=/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power;
interface=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen; member=Changed

2) I instrumented the on_signal call inside gnome-control-
center/panels/sceen/cc-screen-panel.c to emit a g_warning whenever any
signal was received, I never saw anything come out in Q. When the same
code was used in P, the message was printed. This implies, rather
obviously that g-c-c is never getting the signal.

3) I then wrote a simplified test application that attempted to
synchronously (for simplicity) connect to the same signal and just print
a message if one was received and again, no message was received. I
modified this code slightly to listen for signals from Gnome Screensaver
and I get signals, so I think my sample code is fine. The sample code
is attached later. To run it with the gnome-screensaver and get
results, start the code and run "gnome-screensaver-command -a" in
another terminal, and you should see:

** (process:17715): WARNING **: we get signal from :1.89: ActiveChanged

If you swap the 3 screensaver related lines with the SettingsDaemon code
you will get no output. (replace lines 39-41 with 46-48)

4) I see one more interesting thing that may or may not be a problem:
The signals from SettingsDaemon have a Destination field of the settings daemon
itself. Those from Gnome Screensaver have a "null" destination:

signal sender=:1.6 -> dest=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon serial=397
path=/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power;
interface=org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen; member=Changed

signal sender=:1.89 -> dest=(null destination) serial=78
path=/org/gnome/ScreenSaver; interface=org.gnome.ScreenSaver;
member=ActiveChanged

Perhaps this is a problem? I don't know enough about dbus to be sure.

  first off, this applies to 12.10 and 12.04 and possibly earlier

  secondly, in trying to figure out how to change some relatively simple
  things, i've found people suggesting an edit to lightdm.conf, which
  works, but clearly lightdm-set-defaults is a much better and user
  friendly way to do this. the lack of any reference to what the
  possible options are in the lightdm.conf versus the help page (-h) in
  lightdm-set-defaults is an example of this. however, there is no
  reference to it in the lightdm man page. this would be a simple fix.

  it would also help to throw it into a directory that is in the $PATH
  or set the directory it's installed in as part of the $PATH at
  install, but perhaps i should create a different bug for this.

  Fine and good, but because of a disability, my only means of keyboard

  Lubuntu 12.04 did install (thank you) but would not configure the
  network and indicated that I need a piece of non-free firmware
  (tigon/tg3_tso.bin). Perhaps one of both is these issues are
  contributing to the next problem I encountered.

  I have a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter(wnda3100v2) I was
  hoping to use to wifi enable this laptop that is otherwise not wifi
  ready. From everything I read however, it seems this card will not
  work with Linux. I've tried installing the software with no success.
  Also, Ubuntu doesn't acknowledge anything when I plug the card into a
  USB port. Unless someone can help with this(my preferred choice), I
  do have another alternative that holds some promise..

  I also have a dongle that claims to work with a Linux OS. I can get
  the software from CD to PC and unzipped but can't confirm it is being
  setup/installed. When I plug in the dongle, Ubuntu recognizes there
  is a wireless connection available. In this case, it happens to be my
  Verizon 4G lte MiFi that's being detected but I assume if I can make
  this password protected connection then any free wifi should work. I
  think there is still a compatability or configuration problem that I
  can't get passed. I can't get authenticated and I'm very familier
  with the password for my MiFi card. It's not that the authentication
  fails but keeps cycling and asking me to input the password again,
  never connecting.

Bug description:
  The current behavior tweak of onboard is to hide it when the session
  starts.

  This leads to a useability issue when starting the dash for the first
  time, e.g. as the dash opens and an empty onboard frame is rendered
  but not usable for 45 seconds.

  I would prefer to have the keyboard opened when the session starts and
  pay the price then, rather than randomly irritating the user the first
  time he/she tries to do input.

James, from some discussions today it may also be okay to land the fix
in Raring and not Quantal. We are likely rolling over to R in the next
few weeks.

  For systems equipped with hot keys to adjust screen brightness, the
brightness gauge in "gnome-control-center screen" is not responding to
brightness hot-key actions.

Status in “gcalctool” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  gcalctool 6.2.0-0ubuntu2 is a great tool to copy, past and calculate
  formula from a document. Normally, false syntax causes a error
  message, for example "1+1W+1" --> ERROR. That is OK.

  But the result of "1+1Ω+1" is NOT "error" but "2"!

  The charakter above is "Omega", but it is the same with other special
  characters, for example "no-break space". All characters after the
  special charakter are ignored.

  By the way: A nice feature after fix this bug: Immediately marking red

  1. Click "1", "+", "1", "=" (or type it)
  2. Calculator shows the answer "2"
  3. Click on square root sign, then click "="
  4. Calculator shows the error message "malformed expression"

  Actually the calculator requires to click on "sqrt", "2", then "=".

  This is completely counter-intuitive, and against work flow of
  "normal" calculator. Moreover this way of working does not allow to
  reuse existing results, and build up complex calculation from simple
  intermediate ones.

  To my opinion there should be at least an option so that operation
  like square root, square, etc immediately apply the operation on the
  current result, not after clicking "=", just like regular calculator.

  inside /var/lib/lightdm that are owned by some other random system

  Proposed fix

  if [ -d /var/lib/lightdm ]; then
chown lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm
chmod 0750 /var/lib/lightdm

Bug description:
  While I was trying out different display managers, I removed, then
  removed completely and then later reinstalled lightdm.This ended
  up changing the user id of lightdm. However, the dot files in
  /var/lib/lightdm were still owned by the old, now invalid user id and
  so lightdm could not read them. lightdm now did not start because it
  couldn't open its .Xauthority file. I fixed this by removing all
  the dot files in the /var/lib/lightdm directory and then letting
  lightdm recreate them. It looks like the "remove completely" option
  should remove the dot files in /var/lib/lightdm so they will be
  recreated with the correct userid if lightdm is reinstalled at a later
  date.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1044485] Re: lightdm-set-defaults is undocumented in lightdm man page

2012-11-07 Thread Matt Fischer
Lars,

I think there's already a bug for lightdm.conf needing a manpage:

#883189 Need better(-located) documentation on lightdm.conf

You might make your other suggestion there also.

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067587] [NEW] lightdm doesn't ship the appport collection script and the collection script doesn't collect the right stuff

2012-10-16 Thread Matt Fischer
Public bug reported:

As of 1.4.0 the apport collection script (source_lightdm.py) is not
being shipped. Even if it was, it's collecting the wrong files (old log
names) and is not gathering the config files which are also useful.

** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Medium
 Assignee: Matt Fischer (mfisch)
 Status: In Progress

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 887316] Re: /var/lib/lightdm files owned by invalid user after reinstall (directory should be clean when lightdm is removed)

  /var/lib/lightdm files owned by invalid user after reinstall
  (directory should be clean when lightdm is removed)

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in “lightdm” source package in Precise:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  While I was trying out different display managers, I removed, then
  removed completely and then later reinstalled lightdm.This ended
  up changing the user id of lightdm. However, the dot files in
  /var/lib/lightdm were still owned by the old, now invalid user id and
  so lightdm could not read them. lightdm now did not start because it
  couldn't open its .Xauthority file. I fixed this by removing all
  the dot files in the /var/lib/lightdm directory and then letting
  lightdm recreate them. It looks like the "remove completely" option
  should remove the dot files in /var/lib/lightdm so they will be
  recreated with the correct userid if lightdm is reinstalled at a later
  date.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1055783] Re: LightDM doesn't take full ownership of /var/lib/lightdm which can prevent lightdm from starting

Title:
  LightDM doesn't take full ownership of /var/lib/lightdm which can
  prevent lightdm from starting

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  1. Install lightdm
  2. Remove lightdm
  3. Install some random package that adds a new system user
  4. Install unity-greeter which pulls in lightdm
  5. Set lightdm as default and either reboot or kill any other dm's and sudo
service lightdm start

  What should happen

  You get the pretty Unity greeter

  What does happen
  ===
  You get the X failed to start box.

  During the install in step 4, I got this output:

  Setting up lightdm (1.3.3-0ubuntu4) ...
  Adding group `lightdm' (GID 131) ...
  Done.
  Warning: The home dir /var/lib/lightdm you specified already exists.
  Adding system user `lightdm' (UID 119) ...
  Adding new user `lightdm' (UID 119) with group `lightdm' ...
  The home directory `/var/lib/lightdm' already exists. Not copying from
`/etc/skel'.
  adduser: Warning: The home directory `/var/lib/lightdm' does not belong to
the user you are currently creating.
  usermod: no changes
  usermod: no changes
  usermod: no changes

  I verified that /var/lib/lightdm was owned by lightdm:lightdm.
  However, there are a bunch of left-over dot files and directories
  inside /var/lib/lightdm that are owned by some other random system
  user.

  Proposed fix
  ==
  This in debian/lightdm.postinst should be recursive:

  if [ -d /var/lib/lightdm ]; then
chown lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm
chmod 0750 /var/lib/lightdm
  fi

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 970669] Re: Cannot login when shutdown command is overtaken by XUbuntu log-out

2012-10-14 Thread Matt Fischer
** Summary changed:

- Cannot login when shutdown command is overtook by XUbuntu log-out
+ Cannot login when shutdown command is overtaken by XUbuntu log-out

Title:
  Cannot login when shutdown command is overtaken by XUbuntu log-out

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  XUbuntu 11.10
  LightDM 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.6

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. In standard XUbuntu installation bring up the terminal, type "sudo
shutdown -P +80" and press enter. Don't fill in password.
  2. Choose Log-Out screen from XUbuntu system menu and turn off computer using
this GUI possibility to do it (leaving the terminal with shutdown command
opened).
  3. Start the computer - the LightDM will not let you log-in as common user,
because the system identifies itself as in shutdown mode and the only user that
can log-in is root, which can be tricky in Ubuntu as sudoers does not need to
set root password.
