[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1901586] Re: [snap] CA Certificates from /usr/local/share/ca-certificates are not used

2023-10-02 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Note that when you put a certificate in `/usr/local/share/ca-
certificates`, and you run `sudo update-ca-certificates`, the
certificates will be converted and copied to `/etc/ssl/certs`.

As such, the "old" way of doing things should still work with snaps. If
this is not the case, please explain the steps you take to install the
certificate.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
We have a company internal CA and placed its root CA certificate in
  /usr/local/share/ca-certificates and ran update-ca-certificates. This
always worked for chromium based browsers.

With chromium-browser as snap in Ubuntu 20.04 this seems to not work
any more. Chromium reports invalid certificates as it cannot validate
  the chain any more.

PLease make the snap version of Chromium use the certificates from the
  system (out of /etc/ssl/certs etc).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1741074] Re: [snap] chrome-gnome-shell extension fails to detect native host connector

2021-09-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I want to make this a bit more clear:

Every single Belgian needs this functionality in order to do basic stuff
like:

* File their taxes
* Read communication from the government
* Check their medical history
* Register for a (covid) vaccine
* Rent stuff from the government
* etc.

It is vital that this issue is fixed before phasing out the Firefox deb
package. With the Chromium apt package gone, there will be no
alternative in the Ubuntu repositories to do these basic things in
Belgium.

It’s really nice that our government is supporting Ubuntu using open-
source software (https://github.com/Fedict/eid-mw) using common
standards and APIs. Breaking this vital functionality looks like a big
middle-finger to them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1888380] Re: Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

2020-08-11 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Note: this message is only shown when Chromium is actually migrated, not
when a user installs the `chromium-browser` package manually. Given that
this was the way to install chromium in previous released, many users do
this without reading the description of the package.

These users are also surprised that the snap is installed. It might be
useful to show the message to everyone who installed chromium using the
apt package.

Title:
Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Summary of current state:

Back in 19.10 we migrated the deb of chromium to a snap. Users who
installed the deb, got snapd and the snap of chromium. Users who
already had the deb of chromium, and upgraded, got snapd and the snap.

The goal of making the snap was (largely) to reduce the workload on
the desktop team in packaging chromium, and to enable the desktop team
to publish updates to users very quickly across all supported
releases. For users, the goal is to have an up to date chromium
  browser.

For people upgrading, the migration goal was to ensure they kept the
browser they'd installed (chromium has never been a default on Ubuntu,
but has been on at least one flavour).

  Feedback from the field:

   * Some have complained that the Chromium snap has bugs which didn't manifest
in the deb (see this very bug tracker)
   * Some complained that there was no indication that they'd have a deb
replaced by a snap (hard to know how many users actually care about this)
   * Derivative distributions have complained that snapd is being installed
"under the covers" or "via the backdoor" (or other pejorative statements)

  Suggestion for improvement:

I believe a fair amount of critique comes from the ignorance of why
chromium was migrated to a snap, as most users don't read our blog
posts, news articles or release notes. In addition, there's not a
tremendous number of user-facing packages which have gone through the
deb-to-snap migration, so not a lot of prior art in the field.

So it's my believe we should document this better, inform the users
  better.

  * At the point of installation of the deb, make it clear that snapd will be
installed, followed by the chromium snap (and whatever other content and base
snaps are required).
  * During an upgrade from the deb to the snap, make it clear the deb is being
replaced, with similar information to when the snap is installed.
  * Link to documentation / blog / specific release notes in visible places
which makes it clear why this is happening.

I'll refrain from suggesting technical solutions because I think we
  need to discuss the options.

When changing the cursor theme with gnome-tweaks, I can observe that
some themes aren't respected in the chromium snap. This appears to be
specific to chromium, other snaps like evince or gimp use the correct
  cursors.

Yaru and Adwaita are fine, but Redglass or Whiteglass aren't.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1719797] Re: Firmware update seemingly not working

2018-11-21 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I faked it previously by manually downgrading my bios (downloading the
previous version from the bios vendor, putting it on a FAT32 USB stick
and using the upgrade option in the bios setup), after which the
software center shows the update again.

There should also be a way to downgrade using the fwupdate commandline
tool.

Bug description:
The fix for this particular issue is tracked in SRU bug
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fwupd/+bug/1791999

  Regression potential:
Fixes for this particular bug would have the risk to manifest in devices not
showing up in gnome-software, but this risk is very low.

  Test case:
  1) Run a UEFI firmware update from Gnome software.
  2) Make sure that the update disappears from the listing after pressing the
update button.

  Original bug:

  Ubuntu 17.10

On a dell latitude 5580, the firmware update seems to not work while
  it actually does.

  1. Gnome software reports there is a new firmware update.
  2. I click "update now"
  3. The update disappears for a few seconds, then reappears.
  4. When I reboot my laptop, the laptop goes into firmware update modus,
updates the firmware, and starts Ubuntu.

  What I expect:

After clicking "update now", Gnome software tells me my computer has
to restart the update. Either the update is listed and greyed out with
a "reboot required" message, or the update is not visible.

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 17.10, Wayland session.

In the terminal, the keycombination `ctrl-left-arrow` and `ctrl-right-

this works, no matter which key you press first (ctrl or arrow). In
wayland, you have to press the ctrl key first, otherwise, the cursor
  will not move.

  # How to reproduce:

type some words in gnome terminal press `left-arrow` key, wait for the
cursor to move and, and press `ctrl`.

  # What happens

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and stops immediately
  when you press `ctrl`.

  # What should happen

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and starts moving one
word per "tick" when you press `ctrl`.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720213] Re: Word moving with left-arrow-ctrl broken in wayland

2018-08-31 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I disagree because this is the behavior on all other DE's, on Windows
and on Mac, and on most other applications. Only a few applications
don't adhere to this, even on Wayland.

Thanks for the link, I'll post a bug there.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772636] Re: panel shows "VPN off" when VPN is in fact running

2018-05-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I do not think those bugs are related to this issue since this is a
regression and since the bug explicitly mentions that the menu is
correct, but the status icon is not.

In my case neither the status icon nor menu are correct and it seems as
if the menu in its entirety just doesn't get updated when any (vpn)
state changes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772636] Re: panel shows "VPN off" when VPN is in fact running

2018-05-23 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Yes, the list of vpn toggles in the panel gets out of sync with the
actual state of the VPNs. The Settings app shows the correct state.

Note that I've never experienced this with 17.10 and I always experience
this with 18.04. This is thus a regression in my case.

Maybe relevant:

If I add a new VPN in the settings app, the panel also doesn't get
updated; the new vpn doesn't show up in the list of available vpn's in
the applet.

In attachment a screenshot which shows the issue in one shot. Notice
that the `vmware-tengu-vpn` is active according to settings, but not
active according to the panel and note how `NEWVPN` is not shown at all
in the panel.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720510] Re: Content sometime not display until a focus/geometry change

2018-01-25 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I did some more testing for this bug. I can't reproduce it using
Communitheme. This seems to be an Ambiance-specific issue.

I can relieably reproduce this every time using the following workflow
on Ambiance and not on Communitheme:

1. Open gnome software
2. Install or uninstall rocketchat
3. Close gnome software
4. Open gnome software
5. Search for libreoffice
- No search results are being displayed. Two ways to show the search results:
 a) go back to gnome software home page and search again -> search displays now
 b) click on another window (of another application) -> search results appear
as soon as you click.

** Also affects: ubuntu-themes
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

- Test case:
- Open a new version of gnome-software/Ubuntu Software
- Search for soft
- No results are shown
- Do something outside the gnome-software window, e.g mouse click or focus on
another window, and the results are shown.
+ # Test case 1:
+
+ 1. Open a new version of gnome-software/Ubuntu Software
+ 2. Search for soft
+ 3. No results are shown
+ 4. Do something outside the gnome-software window, e.g mouse click or focus
on another window, and the results are shown.
+
+ # Test case 2 (reliably reproduces issue every time):
+
+ 1. Open gnome software
+ 2. Install or uninstall rocketchat
+ 3. Close gnome software
+ 4. Open gnome software
+ 5. Search for libreoffice
+ - No search results are being displayed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1722176] Re: "Sorry something didn't work, snap not installed" when a snap package is removed

2017-11-13 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
This is what I did to reproduce the bug:

1. Open gnome software, search for rocketchat, install the desktop app.
2. close gnome software
3. open gnome software, search for rocketchat, remove the desktop app.

What happens: The snap gets removed correctly but you get the error
"sorry something went wrong, snap not installed".

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  gnome-software 3.26.1-0ubuntu1~ppa1

  Test Case:
  1. Install a snap
  2. Remove it

  Expected result
The snap is removed and nothing else

  Actual result
After the removal there is a message "Sorry something didn't work, snap is
not installed" which is true because it has been intentionally removed but
useless. This is not only reproducible.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1593357] Re: Software app should not show command-line only snaps

2017-11-10 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Any progress on this? This is a serious UX issue for less technical
users.

As an example, the rocketchat server is listed first when searching for
rocketchat.

Title:
Software app should not show command-line only snaps

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
By design, the Software app only shows "apps". I'm not sure precisely
what standard is used but at a minimum, an "app" includes a .desktop
  file.

This is a common complaint by users who prefer the way the Ubuntu
Software Center worked (default before 16.04 LTS) where everything in
the archive was installable or uninstallable via the gui. See bug
1553211 as one example where this kind of request is more or less
  closed as WONTFIX.

On the other hand, all snaps are currently being shown in the Software
app, even if they are command-line apps and don't bundle a .desktop.
For consistency, the same standard needs to be used to show snaps as
  to show classic .deb's.

Two specific test cases I saw are Cassandra and Jenkins (which were
"Editor's Picks" in the development snapshot I tested from
  https://launchpad.net/~attente/+archive/ubuntu/gnome-software this
  week).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1083757] Re: LibreOffice Print dialog needs to support Bonjour broadcasting of remote printers

Title:
LibreOffice Print dialog needs to support Bonjour broadcasting of
  remote printers

Status in LibreOffice:
  Confirmed
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
CUPS upstream dropped the CUPS broadcasting/browsing mechanism to
automatically
discover shared remote printers beginning from 1.6.x. Replacement is
Bonjour-based broadcasting odf the shared printers by CUPS and on the client
side the application's print dialogs are responsible for browsing these
broadcasts and listing the remote printers appropriately. CUPS even provides a
  library function for that now.

  See

  https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-r-cups-bonjour-
  browsing

  I wrote there:

  --
The CUPS Browsing/Broadcasting mechanism which made print queues shared on
remote CUPS servers automatically visible for the local CUPS daemon and so for
local applications got dropped upstream from CUPS 1.6.x on. Ubpstream has
replaced this functionality by Bonjour-based broadcasting (under Linux
implemented via Avahi), an OS-indpendent PWG (Printing Working Group)
standard,
but this lacks the implementation of browsing on the client side making the
printers on remote CUPS servers not automatically appearing any more.

Ubuntu Quantal's CUPS has a mega patch to forward-port this functionality from
the old CUPS for one cycle, to avoid regressions. We cannot carry such a patch
eternally, and we should follow upstream and the PWG standards.

So in Ubuntu Raring we need the real solution which means that the print
dialogs (upstream-recommended solution) or the CUPS daemon (how I like to have
it) takes the new Bonjour (Avahi) broadcasts to display the shared remote CUPS
queues automatically. The browsing functionality is implemented in the CUPS
library (libcups) from CUPS 1.6.x on, but there is currently no production
code
  using these functions.

Upstream expects the print dialogs to use the new library functions for
displaying the new queues. This would require modifications and upstream
submissions for GTK, Qt, and LibreOffice at least and this does not safely
cover all existing applications which have CUPS-aware print dialogs and
therefore listed the remote queues before. Especially printing from the
command
  line would not be covered.

The better approach would be modifying the CUPS daemon so that it uses the new
library function to find the remote queues and advertize them like its own
local queues. Where the CUPS daemon needs to be patched for that we could
probably derive from Quantal's CUPS Broadcasting/Browsing forward port patch.
The new Bonjour browsing patch being based on the new standard way of Bonjour
broadcasting has probably good chances to be accepted upstream.

This feature does not only prevent a regression, but it also helps to more
easily access printers connected to Mac OS X machines (they broadcasted
Bonjour-only all the time) and also for mobile Ubuntu devices. Usually you do
not have connected printers to tablets or phones and you carry them around
between different local networks, so here it is especially important that they
automatically pick up the print queues in the local network.
  --

Such a patch to the CUPS daemon or an extra daemon to do the browsing and
add/remove queues appropriately in the local CUPS environment is also not the
best solution but a way to avoid regressions with legacy apps.

The real intention from upstream is that all print dialogs browse the print
queues available on the local network via Bonjour (under Linux implemented by
Avahi), where print queues on the local network are CUPS queues from Linux and
Mac OS X but also IPP printers which broadcast themselves via Bonjour (IPP
Everywhere printers). Printing on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
already works this way. These devices do not allow the setup of local queues
at
all and they discovcer available print queues via Bonjour.

For this the CUPS library has even special functions, see as sample code the
  program

  cups/testcups.c

  to be called as follows:

  cups/testcups enum 1

"enum" makes it enumerating printers and the number is the number of seconds
to
  Bonjour-browse for network printers.

The library function is the function cupsEnumDests() in cups/dest.c. For
Bonjour browsing it must be called with a non-zero value for the msec
  parameter.

This feature in the print dialogs is VERY urgent because:

  - This is how CUPS upstream and also the PWG (Printing Working Group,
http://www.pwg.org/) expects how network printing with

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1719797] Re: Firmware update seemingly not working

2017-10-22 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
There seems to be two issues:

1. When clicking "update" on the firmware update, you do not get a
notification to restart the machine. I do get a notification if I click
the "Update All" button in the top-right corner.

2. After clicking "Update" but before the restart, the update re-appears
in the list of updates. This gives me the impression that the update
failed. I see two possible solutions: a) don't show the update after the
update process has started. b) change the "update" button to a "restart
to update" button that prompts to restart the machine on click.

In the terminal, the keycombination `ctrl-left-arrow` and `ctrl-right-

wayland, you have to press the ctrl key first, otherwise, the cursor

  # How to reproduce:

type some words in gnome terminal press `left-arrow` key, wait for the

  # What happens

The cursor first moves one character per "tick", and stops immediately
  when you press `ctrl`.

Bug description:
  Using 17.10

  1. Pair bluetooth headphone with mic (like Bose QC35)
  2. Play music

  # What I get:

Music is very bad quality because the "headset head unit (HSP/HFP)"

(A2DP Sink)" profile fixes the audio.

  # What I expect:

Music is good quality because A2DP profile is chosen by default.

  # Why should A2DP be chosen by default?

  1. Given that HSP quality is so low, we can assume that the primary use for
bluetooth headsets is to listen to music. As a result, setting it to A2DP by
default will give good experience for the biggest amount of use-cases.
  2. Bluez supports automatic switching from A2DP to HSP when a program
identifies a recording stream as "Phone" (or optionally when it doesn't
identify the recording stream with PulseAudio 11 [1]) so in many cases, it's
not even needed to manually switch to HSP.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1719797] [NEW] Firmware update seemingly not working

2017-09-27 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 17.10

On a dell latitude 5580, the firmware update seems to not work while it
actually does.

1. Gnome software reports there is a new firmware update.
2. I click "update now"
3. The update disappears for a few seconds, then reappears.
4. When I reboot my laptop, the laptop goes into firmware update modus, updates
the firmware, and starts Ubuntu.

What I expect:

After clicking "update now", Gnome software tells me my computer has to
restart the update. Either the update is listed and greyed out with a
"reboot required" message, or the update is not visible.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1506704] Re: Thin font, nautilus doesn't integrate with Unity.

2016-07-18 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I have the same issues as Wiktor explained in commend #2. Fonts look
exactly like the screenshot.

As Wiktor said, the problem is possibly related to bad hardware messing
up the boot sequence. Everytime I have this problem, something display-
related seems to crash right after boot, making the screen flash, and
showing the ugly black X cursor for a few seconds. Everytime I have this
problem, I see Intel Bluetooth driver issues in dmesg output. No font
issues = no bluetooth error messages in dmesg output and vice versa.

If you save the network settings to /etc/NetworkManager/system-

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1436724] Re: No prompt to unlock sim after airplane mode

2015-03-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I guess UT should do a check after flight mode? Check if sim is locked, if
so; prompt?

2015-03-26 10:21 GMT+01:00 Michael Zanetti
michael.zane...@canonical.com:

@Albert, the bq hardware seems to be a bit special in that it turns off
the modem completely in flight mode and loses the unlocked state. Ubuntu
touch itself doesn't require to re-enter the sim pin after flight mode.
On the nexus 4 for instance, the SIM card stays unlocked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1396723] [NEW] cannot connect to share with username and password

2014-11-26 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

After configuring a share in my home folder with nautilus, I cannot
connect to the share with my username and password.

Steps to reproduce (fresh install):
1) open nautilus
2) configure share, uncheck guest access
3) click browse network down left
4) go to your computer, try to connect to the newly created share
5) login with the username and password of your account

Expected Behaviour: you can login and see the share
Behaviour I get: Access Denied

If I check guest access, I can connect as guest. I think this has
something to do with your user not being a samba user.

Adding myself as a samba user in system-config-samba solves the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1011684] Re: Opening .deb package shows home screen briefly before package screen

2014-06-04 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts

Bug description:
If the software center is launched because the user clicked to install
a deb package, it is not needed to load the welcome screen for the
software-center. It takes extra time, and is confusing - (where is my
  deb package?)

Then after the front page loads, the deb page appears and the install
  option is there...

What I would propose is that software-center detects if it is launched
with the deb option, and if so.. don't load the front screen, load a
template of the view that will appear to install the deb. That will
give the application a snappy response and wont be confusing.

This has been fixed a long time ago. To be sure, I checked it again in

installed. Do you want to repair this problem now?'

  2. Launch Ubuntu Software Center.

(When finished testing, reset if necessary with sudo apt-get remove

What happens: An alert appears, Items cannot be installed or removed

Once Update Manager has finished the repairs, you can close it and

I tried it one more time; now plays normally and at the end, it goes to
the next song, but it still shows like it is playing the first song.

I know this is a very strange bug report, if you need more/more clear
information, ask me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1216600] Re: rythmbox freezes randomly when playing song

2013-08-25 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
** Description changed:

While playing a .wav song, rythmbox suddenly skips over some parts and
then freezes. If i close rythmbox, open it again and play the same song,
- everything works like expected...
+ it plays it until the end, and then stops.

- I have had this a couple of times with different songs.
+ I tried it one more time; now plays normally and at the end, it goes to
+ the next song, but it still shows like it is playing the first song.
+
+ I know this is a very strange bug report, if you need more/more clear
+ information, ask me.

- Expected: plays song and goes to next
- Reality: Plays song, skips over bits and hangs when at end of song.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1208993] [NEW] Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2013-08-06 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
Public bug reported:

Hi

While copying many and large files to and from a USB drive, the system
becomes incredibly slow and sometimes hangs. I watched the system
monitor while it was running slowly but cpu was not above 50% at any
time, the same for memory.

I'm using the WD my passport HD with a USB3 port of my ASUS K55VD
laptop.

Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu16
  Candidate: 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu16
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu16 0
500 http://ubuntu-archive.mirror.nucleus.be/ raring/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Steps to reproduce:
1) Aquire many large files (like your totally legit moviecollection)
2) Copy files to external HD
3) Open your browser and be sad when your system becomes incredibly slow after
a few minutes

This is my first bugreport so if I'm missing something, please tell me.
