[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1448617] [NEW] Useless error message
Public bug reported: The dialog states in the first section This feature can't be enabled because the necessary packages are not installed. This message is completely useless, because it leaves me completely in the dark what the actual problem is and how I can resolve it. It should instead provide a button to install whatever the system is missing or at least name the packages that I need to install manually. (It's probably samba, *I* know how to fix this) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04 Package: gnome-user-share 3.0.4-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.19.0-15.15-generic 3.19.3 Uname: Linux 3.19.0-15-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 2.17.2-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sun Apr 26 10:09:06 2015 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-file-share-properties SourcePackage: gnome-user-share UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to vivid on 2015-04-24 (1 days ago) ** Affects: gnome-user-share (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug third-party-packages vivid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-user-share in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448617 Title: Useless error message Status in gnome-user-share package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: The dialog states in the first section This feature can't be enabled because the necessary packages are not installed. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1323255] [NEW] Usability: cryptsetup is missing from default install
Public bug reported: On a fresh install of Ubuntu I connect a USB drive or SD card, that I formatted and encrypted with gnome-disks (on another system). I get a dialog prompting for the password, I enter the correct password. I get an error dialog: Error unlocking /dev/sdg1: Error spawning command-line `cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdg1 luks-a6645339-a9d6-4dc5-985a-023ff620522e ': Failed to execute child process cryptsetup (No such file or directory) (g-exec-error-quark, 8) There are several problems: 1) The software pretends to support encrypted disks by showing a password prompt but it doesn't. 2) It's 2014. Ubuntu should really support encrypted external disks by default. Period. 3) The error dialog is not helpful at all and a perfect example why Ubuntu is not ready for the mainstream. What were e.g. my parents supposed to do with this? Workaround: sudo apt-get install cryptsetup Real fix: 1) The software should check if cryptsetup is there, *before* showing the password prompt and show an apropriate, helpful message if it is not. Possibly with an easy one-click solution. The volume you connected/inserted is encrypted. Additional software needs to be installed to support this. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing
Effectively what was suggested back then was that the close button design should be different from the closequit button. You don't give an argument *why* this is necessary. I believe we should remove the close button from the window decoration, where the application doesn't quit on window close. The action associated with closing without quitting the process is more like minimizing or hiding. Closing i.e. (x) is clearly mentally associated with quitting, and it should be absolutely unambiguous. This would be a hack as a workaround for another hack. Why not *fix* it correctly by removing the wrong behavior in the first place? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875002 Title: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Confirmed Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: To reproduce: Start rhythmbox. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 875002] Re: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing
Please do NOT introduce preferences or plugins or whatnot for just plain wrong behaviour. This has to be fixed, because it is a bug and that's all. If Rhythmbox gets a preference for this kind of behaviour, then every program should have one. Or why shouldn't they? Either make RB behave like the other programs or make the other programs behave like RB. Right now on Ubuntu there is this weird mix between OS X-like application-based behaviour where closing the app's window does not end the program and the Windows-like window-based opposite. Please, read this article by Joel Spolsky about introducing preferences, which fits in here perfectly: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog59.html -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875002 Title: choosing quit from unity launcher doesn't close rhythmbox if music is playing Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: New Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: To reproduce: Start rhythmbox.
