For me the login screen hangs as the Ubuntu logo at the bottom of the
screen fades in.

Bug description:
  I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.2 desktop in a virtual machine under VMWare
  Fusion Pro V11.1.0 on MacOS Mojave 10.14.5, all on a 15inch 2018
  Macbook Pro.

  I've been running this Ubuntu 18.04.2 VM without problem for many months
without problem.
  Yesterday, I did 'sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade'. Upon rebooting, the
system hangs immediately after displaying the splash screen. I never see a
login screen. And I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to navigate to a console/tty login.

  I can SSH into the system however.

  I've found that I can work around the hang/freeze if I uncomment the
following line in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf;
  #WaylandEnable=false

  After uncommenting the WaylandEnable=false line and rebooting, then I
  see the login prompt as expected and I can then log in and use the
  system normally again.

  After the 'apt upgrade' my system is running linux kernel 4.15.0-51,
  as shown in this 'uname -a' output;

  Linux ubuntuvm1 4.15.0-51-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 15 14:27:21

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1649288] [NEW] Unified ping doesn't support IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses

2016-12-12 Thread Neil Wilson
Public bug reported:

ping to a mapped address

ping :::216.58.213.68

sends an ICMPv6 packet out onto the Internet with the mapped address in
the destination packet and the IPv6 address as the source. Mapped
addresses shouldn't appear on the public internet according to the RFC.

I would have expected this to use the IPv6 API to send an ICMP packet
over the v4 Internet on a dual stack machine in accordance with RFC4038.

Title:
  Unified ping doesn't support IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses

Status in iputils package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  ping to a mapped address

  ping :::216.58.213.68

  sends an ICMPv6 packet out onto the Internet with the mapped address
  in the destination packet and the IPv6 address as the source. Mapped
  addresses shouldn't appear on the public internet according to the
  RFC.

  I would have expected this to use the IPv6 API to send an ICMP packet
  over the v4 Internet on a dual stack machine in accordance with
  RFC4038.

Bug description:

  [Impact]
  Causes extra messages to spam syslog on every address addition netlink
message, or every route change. (Very often)
  No actual behavioral impact aside from a log which is potentially very
rapidly growing due to these warning messages.

  [Test Case]
  This requires an Apple Airport device connected in IPv6 tunneling mode.
  1) Connect the computer to the Airport device's network.

  You should see IN6_ARE_ADDR_EQUAL assertions without the patch, and no
  such messages with the patch applied.

  [Regression Potential]
  Changes testing logic for IP address comparison to return silently rather
than asserting (because assertions cause the messages to be printed to syslog);
so no actual impact on that side except for the messages not being printed out.
  However, this introduces duplicates checking for the routes and addresses as
well, which has a small potential for extra routes to be missing if the
duplicate checking fails to consider extra flags which would make the
similar-looking routes or addresses actually very different.

  When both the Ethernet and wlan are connected to an Apple Airport
  running IPv6.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 996032] Re: Constant _ip6_config_add_nameserver: assertion `IN6_ARE_ADDR_EQUAL (nameserver, &nameservers[i]) == FALSE' failed messages in syslog

2012-07-25 Thread Neil Wilson
It happens ever time. My v6 nameserver is issued by an Apple Airport
operating in tunnel mode. There is only a single nameserver issued and
it is the address of the Airport (much as the v4 nameserver is the
address of the Airport).

The RA issued by the router has a single recursive DNS entry in it.

I'm also seeing the Ubuntu machine issue a 'port unreachable' ICMPv6
message to any v6 DNS responses.

So the Ubuntu issues DNS query to port 53 over v6.
The router responds back to the UDP source port
Ubuntu then issues a 'port unreachable' ICMPv6 message.

I'm not seeing that on the parallel v4 query.
