[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081019] Re: Benchmark for disks always fails on 32 bit systems

2016-07-18 Thread Oliver Joos
I confirm that this bug is fixed in newer releases.
I tested gnome-disk-utility 3.18.3.1 on a Linux Mint MATE 18.0 32bit! and the
benchmark works now.

I checked the 32bit iso image on a 32-bit hardware and on a 64-bit
hardware: this bug is fixed on both. (although the latter is not a
recommended setup)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 502642] Re: .ts files always get recognized as application/x-linguist and never as video/mp2t (mpeg transport stream)

2014-12-10 Thread Oliver Joos
I reported this bug and it was fixed in March 2010. If you see new problems
then please feel free to open a new bug report! Describe the exact situation:
does it fail with local ts-files? or only on network shares (samba)? Are the
files encrypted or playable with your videoplayer? Do you use Nautilus or
another file browser? Add version numbers of everything, ect...
And leave a comment here with a link to your new bug report to help affected
people follow you.

To solve it yourself try my final patch from comment #20.

I just checked my Linux Mint 17.1 which is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:
its file browser Nemo (= Nautilus clone) does recognize my ts-files
correctly as MPEG-2 transport stream, locally and remote through NFS.
I have no samba network shares. My ts-files were recorded by my settop-
box and are not encrypted.

  Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

I checked Hardy, Jaunty and Karmic: *.ts files are always mapped to
  application/x-linguist by
  /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml. But there are several
Linux-based settop boxes that record videos in *.ts-files. So if
application/x-linguist is obsolete then it should simply be replaced
by video/mpeg. Otherwise the mime framework has to distinguish such
files by inspecting their headers. If someone knows more about
x-linguist files, please add a comment!

The problem has already been reported upstream two month ago (see
freedesktop.org above). But for 10.04 LTS we should fix it by a patch,
if it is not fixed upstream by then.

As a workaround copy the attached file to
~/.local/share/mime/packages/mpeg-ts.xml and update your mime-database with:
  $ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime

To trigger the regeneration of failed thumbnails just delete them:
  $ rm ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/*.png

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081019] Re: Benchmark for Harddisk fail

2014-07-22 Thread Oliver Joos
I also have this problem with 3.10.0-1ubuntu3 in Ubuntu 14.04 / Mint 17.

Like Darek in comment #17 I have an amd64 PC (AMD Athlon 64 X2) but use
a i386 kernel and libs.

If I benchmark a small partition at the beginning of a disk or SSD then
the read/write tests end succesfully, and the error occurs as soon as
the access time benchmark starts. Looks like it fails with big sector
numbers (2³²) with 32bit libs on a 64bit CPU.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1185735] [NEW] file-roller does not respect sort order for folders

2013-05-30 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

This bug exists since 2010, see duplicate bug 647004 for Gnome 2.

I checked file-roller 3.6.3 with an Ubuntu Raring 13.04 Live-CD and it
is still an issue.

file-roller displays files and folders in an archive as multi-column
list. Clicking a column title sorts it ascending, clicking it again
sorts it descending. It behaves like Nautilus, except that folders are
never sorted by their date, even if the date column has been clicked.

I'd expect that files and folders are always sorted according to the
same column, namely the last-clicked column that shows the small arrow
to indicate the sort order.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1015500] [NEW] segfault at c ip 08123ea1 sp bfdc2580 error 4 in nautilus[8048000+19a000]

2012-06-20 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

I see this crash of nautilus 2.32 now and then. I did not find other
traces of the crash than one line in dmesg (see bug summary).

It may have to do with browsing ftp-URLs with nautilus. But at the time
of this crash no ftp-site was mounted anymore for hours. It just never
occurred, if I did not mount ftp-sites.

Please give me hints how to generate more debug infos. Then I will try
to reproduce this bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 516592] Re: Network manager kills NFS link on going to sleep hanging Gnome etc.

2012-05-29 Thread Oliver Joos
@Casandro: your fix sounds promising! So I tried it on my Natty, but it
did not help.

Symptoms I see: if any nfs share (not just /home) is still mounted when going
to sleep the system seems to resume immediately but with network-manager
stopped, and (as consequence) any further access to the nfs share will block
the accessing process (e.g. nautilus). Restarting network-manager will unblock
those processes and (surprisingly) continue the previously interrupted sleep!
I still did not find a work-around.

When the system is going to sleep Network Manager unloads the network
interface even though the home directory is NFS loaded on that interface.

This prevents power saving and the system is unusable as Network Manager dies

If you log in on one of the TTYs shutting the system down cleanly fails on
the kernel hung I/O and so the only way out is to press the reset button.

2012-05-29 Thread Oliver Joos
Oh I see. But disabling network-manager as a whole is not an option for
me. I need its WLAN roaming and VPN capabilities.

Thanks for confirming, that this bug seems to be in network-manager. I
agree with that and reported it upstream:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 792622] Re: [Upstream] Cannot save as and export as pdf to samba shares using Libreoffice

2012-02-08 Thread Oliver Joos
We use 10.04 LTS and 11.04 and really hope too that this bug will get
fixed - for all currently supported Ubuntu releases!

I confirm comment #10 that mounting the shares by cifs with nobrl does
work. Try this:

sudo apt-get install cifs-utils
sudo nano /media/your_server.credentials # and add the following 2 lines:

username=your_username_on_server
password=your_password_on_server

sudo chmod go-rwx /media/your_server.credentials
sudo mkdir -p /media/your_server/your_share
sudo nano /etc/fstab # and add all the following on ONE line:

//server_url/your_share  /media/your_server/your_share  cifs
ip=192.168.xxx.yyy,noexec,nounix,nobrl,uid=1000,gid=1000,file_mode=0644,dir_mode=0755,credentials=/media/your_server.credentials
0 0

I am not a cifs expert. So please leave a comment if your know better
options! I think ip=... can be left out if nslookup server_url works
in your LAN. Just make sure that you use nobrl - it's essential for
this workaround.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 705774] Re: LibreOffice - Gnome/GVFS integration

2011-11-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Forget my last comment #14 - it still fails with LibreOffice 3.4.3 on
Natty!

To summarize: if I want to store a new document to an authenticated
samba share then 3.4.3 show a dialog saying something with I/O error.
When started in a terminal then the following message appears together
with the dialog:

(soffice:4588): Gtk-WARNING **: Operation not supported by backend

The share is mounted in ~/.gvfs/sharename/ but its path is always
replaced by smb://synology.local/sharename/ which I guess is a problem
for LibreOffice. I tried creating various links and *.desktop files to
the share or its subdirectories - no luck yet.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 705774] Re: LibreOffice - Gnome/GVFS integration

2011-11-26 Thread Oliver Joos
I like to add that it works if the new document is saved to
~/.gvfs/sharename/ or a sub(-sub)-directory of it. The problem is that
the Save As dialog always remembers the path as
smb://synology.local/sharename/ which does not work for LibreOffice.
Working in a deep directory of a big file tree degenerates to a nagging
point-and-click adventure, even when it is always the same sub-
directory.

Sorry, me again.

I just found the similar bug 792622 and bug 486443 which is open since
end of 2009(!) and has been reported upstream (the upstream link is
broken meanwhile - shame on Oracle). I will continue my efforts at one
of those bug reports since this bug is more about enforced re-
authentication.

@yohann: I tested your workaround, but failed so far.
Does it also work for you with authenticated shares (shares that need
username/password to mount)?
And what do you mean by symlink to the network directory? ln -s .gvfs/
~/myshares or ln -s .gvfs/shareXY ~/myshareXY?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2011-10-27 Thread Oliver Joos
I guess when always_use_location_entry is true then Control+L won't work
(always means always).

I don't use Gnome 3 yet. This bug is more about a removed button in
Gnome 2. If you think Control+L does not work as expected there, then
please open a new bug to keep Gnome as good as it is!

Open it here by executing ubuntu-bug nautilus in a Terminal,
or directly on Gnome: https://bugzilla.gnome.org

is missing. The right Ctrl-L combination does not work to toggle the
version of the field (the left Ctrl-L combination still works, though
it took me a very annoyingly long time to find that out).

  Expected behavior:
Toggle button should be there and be OBVIOUS and either Ctrl-L should work to
toggle field. Nautilus MUST have a location field that a directory path can be
typed into or pasted into, as with a web browser. Without this Nautilus would
be nearly useless [for me] - I would switch to a different file browser or out
of Gnome all together. It's a show-stopper.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2011-10-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Me too I still don't agree that the saved space of this button was worth
removing it. New users often complain about not being able to edit the
path. They never find Ctrl+L themselves. But I do agree that there might
be a better gui element than a button with a pencil on it.

Since Unity is now something completely different(tm), I think we
should continue this discussion upstream on gnome.org.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 786115] Re: display glitches in clock and other applets

2011-10-20 Thread Oliver Joos
@Pedro: your previous comment is a text template that does not match
here. An Oneric live-CD does not include gnome-panel. And this bug is
about an issue in 11.04 which will be supported until autumn 2012, is
it? So please consider to set this bug to Confirmed, or back to New
at least.

My issue is also covered by bug 556782, but Martin who reported this bug
has different hardware and would be left in the cold if this bug just
expires!

Thank you for treating Launchpad reports with care.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 516592] Re: Network manager kills NFS link on going to sleep hanging Gnome etc.

2011-10-19 Thread Oliver Joos
As I wrote on similar bug 792007 I am always able to release the blocking by
restarting network-manager. Try:
  sudo service network-manager restart

Please leave a comment here if you know a permanent workaround to
automatically unmount nfs shares BEFORE the network-manager
disconnects.. It seems that scripts in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/ get
executed too late.

Title:
Network manager kills NFS link on going to sleep hanging Gnome etc.

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

When the system is going to sleep Network Manager unloads the network
interface even though the home directory is NFS loaded on that interface.
Obviously there is still more work happening on that directory and so the
system hangs on I/O in the case where NFS is mounted with the hard option.
This prevents power saving and the system is unusable as Network Manager dies
with the rest of Gnome all waiting for I/O
If you log in on one of the TTYs shutting the system down cleanly fails on
the kernel hung I/O and so the only way out is to press the reset button.

here is the syslog output showing network manager stopping the nic just
before the kernel says ouch I have no file system to talk to:

Title:
libreoffice's file dialogue has gvfs problems

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: libreoffice

When trying to work on a samba share mounted via gvfs-mount the Open-
File dialogue of libreoffice does not work. (System Ubuntu 11.04,
  natty)

  To reproduce:
  1) mount a samba share with the gvfs-mount command (example: gvfs-mount
smb://myserver/myshare)

  2) open libreoffice writer (or calc, or whatever)

  3) go to the menu - file - open

  4) now go the the share mounted via gvfs

  5) try to open any odt/ods/... file

  6) nothing will happen

  Next try:
  1) open nautilus

  2) open the mounted share

  3) click any odt/ods/... file to open it

  4) libreoffice will open and you can try to modify the file (thus,
this way you actually CAN open opendocument files stored on a samba
  share)

  5) try to save your changes

  6) error dialogue pops up

  Thus:
Libreoffice is not usable in an work environment where windows and ubuntu
computers work on folders shared by samba. (By the way: windows pcs work fine
with the shares)

I tested the behaviour on five pcs, all installed with ubuntu 11.04
(natty). All showed the same error.

The only workaround was to install/configure an nfs server for the
linux pcs. (Which is no workaround at all).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 768915] Re: LibreOffice repeatedly asks for Samba file share credentials

2011-08-28 Thread Oliver Joos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 705774 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/705774

@Paul: I have the same problem like you, and your work-around using
~/.gvfs works for me too - thanks!

@Kim: I have no problems opening an existing file, only to save to a new
file on a samba share. Then I see the error you wrote in comment 3. But
I never saw a password dialog. I mark this bug as a duplicate. Your
initial problem in this bug description seems a bit different. So if you
do not agree then just remove the duplicate status again! (press yellow
! just before Duplicate of bug ... and delete the number)

LibreOffice repeatedly asks for Samba file share credentials

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

LIbreoffice is not integrated well with gvfs. When I want to open or
save to a samba share I have to open the share first with Nautilus to
be able to go to the share in LIbreoffice. Now it even starts
promoting me to enter username/password data to save to a samba share.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 705774] Re: LibreOffice - Gnome/GVFS integration

2011-08-28 Thread Oliver Joos
Affects me too in up-to-date Natty with LibreOffice 3.3.3.

I found and marked 2 other duplicates. Paul Phillips has a work-around
in comment 4 of bug 768915: use a Nautilus bookmark to ~/.gvfs
