[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1921112] [NEW] Chromium new tabs stop working when the core snap updates

2021-03-24 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

I've been using the refresh awareness feature:
https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/wip-refresh-app-awareness/10736

That prevents chromium snap from updating while in use, which prevents a
bug where opening a new tab stops working and gives SIGTRAP. (Very
suboptimal, since now programs need to be closed and snap refresh
manually called to get it to update, but I digress.)

However, today I got an update to the "core" snap and new tabs stopped
working again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1812556] [NEW] Screen lock does not work

2019-01-20 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 18.04 the screen lock no longer works. The screen
will not lock automatically despite the setting and even Ctrl+Alt+L and
Super+L fail to do anything.

I've checked that

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen
false

I'm not sure if lightdm is the correct package. I'm using lightdm, since
gdm just gave me a black screen. But not sure which package should
handle the lock.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1616332] [NEW] gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2016-08-24 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

It seems gnome-software is running in the background all the time. Not a
big deal if it was lightweight, but it seems to use hundreds of MB (from
smem output):

Shared Connection gets 10.42.0.X IP addresses even if those are taken

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When you choose "Shared to other computers" in network-manager to
create a network, the IP addresses are always 10.42.0.X. This is bad
enough, but it doesn't check if those addresses are already in use on
another interface, blowing up both networks and messing up routes.

A fix would be to un-hardcode the addresses, but even warning/stopping
the user from creating two networks with the same IPs would be better
  than the status quo.

(In my setup one Ubuntu computer shares its network on a wired
connection. Another Ubuntu computer tries to share that connection via
WiFi. I'm not sure whether Network Manager warns if both the networks
are created on the same computer.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1080612] Re: Installing fglrx/fglrx-updates does nothing. radeon still in use.

2015-11-18 Thread Otus
I'm in the same situation, with Ubuntu 14.04.3 and fglrx-updates.

Tried the instructions in comment #18 but did not change anything. The
log file is attached. Also tried removing and reinstalling fglrx, to no
effect.

Problems seemingly started when I booted without the GPU (using Intel
iGPU) to test hardware and again with the GPU. Before that fglrx was
working fine.

  OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30

Does this mean my Radeon HD 5450/6350 is no longer supported? If so,
then why has there not been a single error or log message saying so?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol

2015-08-17 Thread Otus
Maybe this is a stupid question, but why is a DKMS failure not
considered fatal enough to prevent the kernel upgrade from taking
place, or at least updating grub?

Bug description:
  [Impact]
An update to the lts-vivid backported kernel (3.19.0-26) in Trusty and to the
default kernel in Vivid, pulled in a commit that made pci_ignore_hotplug() GPL
only. As a result, the DKMS module fails.

  [Test Case]
Install the new packages and check that DKMS doesn't fail.

  [Regression Potential]
Low, the patches are already included wily.

Contrarily, if you already have fglrx installed, you can install the
14.04.2 LTS enablement stack without complaints... but it will not work
(very well). I got constant crashes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1384030] [NEW] Utopic boots to corrupted screen in VirtualBox

2014-10-21 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

With VirtualBox I get a weird-sized screen with corruption when booting
the utopic RC. Switching to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and back to Ctrl+Alt+F7 fixes
the issue. With trusty (and IIRC early utopic alphas) there is no such
issue.

I'm running VirtualBox 4.3.10 with Ubuntu Trusty as the host.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1310198] [NEW] Open file dialog network navigation doesn't work

2014-04-20 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

From an open file dialog I can open browse network from the list and
see computers on my network. However, trying to open a network share
doesn't work: there's a message about the file not being a directory.

Expected: Either the network shares are listed and can be opened from
the file dialog, or the browse network option shouldn't be shown.

Both gtk2 and gtk3 applications seem to be affected. I'm not sure which
component the bug might be due to.

Title:
  Windows stopped responding to mouse

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After logging in to the system after suspend or just a locked screen,
windows sometimes stop responding to mouse commands. At that point I'm
only able to interact with either one window or the launcher, maybe
depending on what was active before.

Alt-tab doesn't work, but the Win button opens dash. Keyboard input
works in whichever window is active. Restarting lightdm or compiz
  fixes the issue.

(I have no idea if the bug is in unity or something else.)

Bug description:
If I open any image with eog (I tried several different .png and .svg
files), then click and drag with the left mouse button inside the
window, X immediately crashes and I get taken back to the login
screen. If no image file is open, nothing happens. The behaviour is
the same in Unity and Xfce.

  I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04, fully updated, on a Dell Inspiron 15R
5520 laptop with an AMD Radeon HD 7600M graphics card and the official
64-bit AMD driver (not sure how to tell which version - it was the
latest a couple of months ago anyway). xorg's version is
  1:7.6+12ubuntu1, and eog's is 3.4.2-0ubuntu1.1. If I redirect the
output from eog to a file, I get:

temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

the temporary file inside the target folder.

Temporary file created in source directory for 7z compression

Status in “file-roller” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: file-roller

When creating a 7z archive using file-roller, the temporary .7z.tmp
file is created in the source directory, instead of the target
directory as with other formats like .tar.gz.

This is problematic when the source and target directories are on
different partitions. The source may not have enough free space and in
any case this results in extra copying. I imagine it would be even
more annoying with a network share.

7z/7za from the command line does not have this problem.

screenshot, but with most pages I have favicon displayed and not any text like
page title.

It doesn't matter if GPU rendering is enabled or disabled.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059529] Re: Multiple Network Authentication Dialogs

2013-09-20 Thread Otus
I take that back. I can't reproduce manually by trying to connect to the
same network without giving credentials, but I just woke up to ten
dialogs, so apparently a poor signal can still cause it.

  Multiple Network Authentication Dialogs

Bug description:
Network Manager opens multiple windows asking network authentication.

If network signal is weak, this can happen automatically as NM loses
the network then finds it again, asking for authentication. This can

  To test manually:

  1. Select a wireless network for which no password has been saved from
nm-applet.
  2. The dialog pops up.
  3. Without closing the dialog, reselect the network from nm-applet.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059529] Re: Multiple Network Authentication Dialogs

2013-09-16 Thread Otus
This is fixed in (at least) raring, but it would be great to get the fix
backported to precise as well, so someone with the powers should mark it
as affecting Precise before marking it fixed for Ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1133084] Re: Xorg crashed when dragging image in firefox browser

2013-05-07 Thread Otus
I've got this in Chromium both dragging images and dragging selected
text. Maybe dup of bug 1080514?

I have a Radeon HD7770 and have seen it both with Ubuntu 12.10 and
13.04, my current fglrx is 2:9.012-0ubuntu1 (fglrx-updates).

An Apport window pops up after relogin, but it's never opened a browser
for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 689593] Re: 2x100% CPU and memory usage growth when setting bootable flag in palimpsest

2013-02-23 Thread Otus
I have this in 12.10. When I try to erase the USB with Startup Disk
Creator, the two threads start using 100% CPU each and balloon to tens
of gigabytes of memory in a matter of minutes.

I've stored the raw usb disk contents (dd if=/dev/sdc) in case that's
helpful to a developer, but it's 8GB so I won't store it forever and
can't host it anywhere accessible over the internet.

Status in “gnome-disk-utility” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When unsetting the bootable flag on a partition using palimpsest, the
  following things happen:

  - udisks-helper-modify-partition and udisks-daemon processes use 100% CPU each
  - udisks-daemon chews about 18MiB of memory each second

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102373] Re: Xserver crashed when i try to drag and drop a picture in eog

2013-02-13 Thread Otus
I'm seeing this since I changed from AMD HD 4850 with open drivers to
AMD HD 7770 with fglrx.

Syslog says:
Feb 13 22:46:44 HOSTNAME gnome-session[1705]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal
IO
error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.#012

I'm running 12.10, and the non -updates version of fglrx. Seems to
trigger when I drag drop something, but not always.

2013-02-13 Thread Otus
It happened again immediately after I posted the above. This time a drag
drop cursor (fist with +) was left behind. It stays above everything
else, even if I go Ctrl+Alt+F1.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1101182] [NEW] Shared Connection gets 10.42.0.X IP addresses even if those are taken

2013-01-18 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

When you choose Shared to other computers in network-manager to create
a network, the IP addresses are always 10.42.0.X. This is bad enough,
but it doesn't check if those addresses are already in use on another
interface, blowing up both networks and messing up routes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 452049] Re: Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

2012-11-15 Thread Otus
Like Michael Weimann, I only started seeing this under 12.10. Ubuntu
12.04 was fine, although I copied my fstab over. Maybe the bug used to
be quite specific, but now applies more generally.

One difference I see from the OP is that my mounts are all root:
/media/data/folder /home/username/folder bindbind0 0

Title:
Gnome Places contains filesystems mounted via bind

Status in The G Library - GLib:
  Confirmed
Status in Nautilus:
  New
Status in “glib2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

  What happens:
  1. mount a folder a to point b with the -bind option in /etc/fstab, for
example:
   /media/data /home/username/MyDocuments none
bind,user=username,group=username 0 0
  2. reboot and then open nautilus
  3. nautilus will show the new mount point in the places sidebar but it will
give you an error if you click on the mount point:
  Unable to mount MyDocuments
mount: according to mtab, /media/data is already mounted on
/home/username/MyDocuments
  mount failed

  What should happen:
  1. nautilus should not show these binded folders since they are well
accessible through the filesystem
  2. if the mounted folder (e.g. /mount/data) is a block device then it will
appear in the places sidebar anyway and thus it is not necessary to show the
mount point again
  3. if the mounted folder is a normal folder from an existing file system then
its accessible both from the original location and the newly binded location,
thus the is no need to show it in places again
  4. this is quite annoying

  Additional Information:
  This bug persists in Lucid

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: amd64

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

Where's the bug for 12.10? Google doesn't find it, and the top border is
still almost impossible to grab in Unity (3D).

Bug description:

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
  earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the
window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN (see
comment 320)?

  *

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

  *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
  https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

  *

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

I have some icons with long file names. Sometimes I unintentionally
end up with completely illegible icon labels and overlapping icons. I
have created a snapshot of my intentionally horrific example.

This problem is easy to reproduce when working with file previews
(irregularly shaped images) and icons with long file names. Just
create some and drag them close together, paying attention to not
trigger the a file move event.

I have noticed what I consider to be a related problem. When I remove
a file from my desktop or a new icon is added as a result of some
program adding an entry, the desktop isn't refreshed with autoarranged
icons. I have looked and looked and can find no way to make this my
desktop's behavior. I think this is terrible UI from a usability
standpoint. I will attach the image showing the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1013980] Re: Windows stopped responding to mouse

2012-10-01 Thread Otus
I got this again, this time with no part of the screen responding.
Restarting compiz with 'compiz --replace' fixed the issue.

** Description changed:

After logging in to the system after suspend or just a locked screen,
windows sometimes stop responding to mouse commands. At that point I'm
only able to interact with either one window or the launcher, maybe
depending on what was active before.

Alt-tab doesn't work, but the Win button opens dash. Keyboard input
- works in whichever window is active. Restarting lightdm is the only
- solution I've tried.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059529] [NEW] Multiple Network Authentication Dialogs

2012-10-01 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

Network Manager opens multiple windows asking network authentication.

If network signal is weak, this can happen automatically as NM loses the
network then finds it again, asking for authentication. This can result
in tens of windows after a few hours, if unsupervised.

To test manually:

1. Select a wireless network for which no password has been saved from
nm-applet.
2. The dialog pops up.
3. Without closing the dialog, reselect the network from nm-applet.
4. A second (identical) dialog pops up.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 870035] Re: Double-clicking on Language Support icon in System Settings launches two identical instances of the Language Support window

2012-09-09 Thread Otus
The same is true with other icons that launch external windows, like
Printing and Additional Drivers. I'm updating the title and description
to match.

(I think the real bug is that the icons work on single click, but look
like files/folders in Nautilus, which by default require a double
click.)

** Summary changed:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1048316] [NEW] Releasing the mouse opens the settings clicked even if the mouse is no longer on the icon

2012-09-09 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

If you click an icon in system settings and try to undo the selection

I doubt PA has anything to do with it, but gstreamer might. In any case,
does the upstream link mean this is no longer incomplete?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 956830] Re: playback pauses after two songs, even with repeat enabled

2012-04-14 Thread Otus
I can reproduce 100% of the time and crossfade doesn't help. Playback
sometimes continues after a while (3-4 minutes in the most recent case I
saw) and the song jumps to a position close to where it would have been
if it had been playing from the beginning.

The following transitions cause a pause:
  mp3-ogg
  mp3-flac
  ogg-flac
  flac-ogg

These do not:
  ogg-mp3
  flac-mp3

I don't have other media types in the library to test with.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872055] Re: GtkNotbook scrolling tabs throug mouse doesn't work anymore

2012-04-13 Thread Otus
Here's a patch, based on reverting the patch that disabled this feature
[1]. Tested to work with at least Gedit and Nautilus, but I haven't
tried if any other apps might regress.

I hope Ubuntu will decide to carry this if the GTK3 guys don't go back
to previous behavior. Right now we have e.g. Chromium and Gnome Terminal
supporting mouse wheel, while e.g. Gedit and Nautilus do not. That's
inconsistent.
