[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5

2015-08-28 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
Things were working for me [after a very long fight - so complex I don't
even know what worked] in 12.04.5 until some weeks ago. Something
changed and now I can't get fglrx to work or to install/reinstall. What
is the situation with 12.04.5? Many of the 'It worked' above remarks
fail to mention which, and I assume it is always 14.04.2 I'm very
frustrated having been unable to use my OS for many weeks now [again].
What recently changed that could have caused the problem anew or new
problem? Short of removing the stack [don't know how and don't really
want to] how can I get fgrlx-updates or any fglrx on 12.04.5 I have a
MSI Radeon HD.7970. Will any new AMD driver work?

2015-05-21 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
I'm having big problems getting the new 2:15.200-0ubuntu0.3
installed. I've tried over five times and can't get it to work - can't
even get into the OS in 14.04.2 when it is installed and reboot. What
special 'sauce' is needed? I'm not very proficient with Linux and have
tried in terminal and by synaptic [when all fglrx drivers are purged I
can get in on Xorg - but even that is no longer seeing my three monitors
and has each one as a separate monitor, rather than one big desktop, as
before. Downloaded the fglrx-installer-updates_15.200.orig.tar.gz for
Trusty, but don't see how one is supposed to install it...the only
method I didn't try. Thanks

Hello, I'm quite confused. I thought this was fixed and released. No?!
That might explain the problems I've had as recently as today trying to
install the new fglrx files. Please clarify what the status really IS
now. Thanks.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1380095] Re: Gnome Fallback[s] don't work in 14.04. Work once ONLY if reinstalled

2014-10-17 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
On 17/10/14 08:09, Alberts Muktupāvels wrote:
Not sure if there is easy way to repair your sistem. I would suggest to
 try clean install.

You have log file full of warnings about missing programs. You have put
many launchers on panel, bet programs does not exist for them anymore.
This is what I see from log messages.

You say that clicking on panel makes it crash/disappear. It could crash
because panel fails to find program you try to launch. If so this is
definetly bug as panel should not crash in such cases (I have no time to
 verify this).

If you run programs from terminal and then close terminal it won't close
only terminal, it will close all other programs you launched from
terminal. Add ' ' at the end of programs names when you launch
applications - 'gnome-panel --replace ' . And if you want close
terminal don't do it by clicking close button but type 'exit' command in
 terminal.

You can see your username in terminal.

None of the launchers/programs I tried to launch are the ones now
missing [they are not displayed]. The are ones I have successfully used
only a few days before today. My panels are all black now and not pretty
- why did you want me to change them and can they be changed back to
colored and partly transparent? You are correct about using exit rather
than the close button. But I don't want to launch programs from
terminal, but from launchers on a panel. Is there not a way to just
re-install the likely problematic packages, such as gnome-panel and a
few related? On the username - yes it shows in terminal, but I had my
old username and created another, and can enter into 14.04 using either
- but I think they may be the same 'user' with two different names - but
not sure. They share the same password and seem to be identical - except
for the name.

some, a clean install is not terrifying or doesn't take them long. Not
so for me.
Are you using default theme - Ambiance? Then panels should not be black.
I wanted that you change back to system theme to check if problem is in
custom style. I know one person who had problems with transparent
panels. Problem disappeared when he changed settings back to system
 theme.
I'll have to check which theme I'm using and will have to research how
to tell. I think, but not sure, it is not the default one. Panels are
definitely black now. In 12.04 the color and transparent panels worked
perfectly. I also can't seem to add launchers for many of the programs
and monitors [temp, disk activity, etc.] I had on them before. They are
just not there now after the upgrade.

Transparency does not work fully anyway so I would suggest to use system
theme for now. I have plans on fixing panel background, but that
probably wont happen this year - so background probably will be broken
even in ubuntu 15.04 version. :(

Reinstall wont solve anything. You can try to reset gnome-panel configuration
 (see accepted answer):
 http://askubuntu.com/questions/125662/how-to-reset-gnome-panel

NOTE: It will remove all your customization to panel and will reset to
default. Then try if now gnome-panel starts every time you login. If all good
try to start customize it step by step:
 1) Add custom launcher - do several reboots.
I understand. I mentioned before that my 14.04 [on a very fast machine]
takes about 10-15x longer to start than did 12.04 - so many reboots
really takes a long time!
 2) Try to customize panel style - do serveral reboots.

This way you will find what part is causing problem or you will be lucky
 and problem will disappear.
Pfft! A lot of time and work...but I'll give it a try. I fear like death
a 'clean install'

There is no need for save button. If you changed type to none is dconf-

have more then 4 panels. Did you changed that setting for all panels?

Have you tried to login in session after changing background to none?

When you try to launch gnome-panel do this:
 1) Open gnome-terminal (/usr/bin/gnome-terminal) not gnome-panel
 2) Then type in this command:
 gnome-panel --replace

You may need to do it multiple times as --replace command does not work

There is no need for save button. If you changed type to none is dconf-

have more then 4 panels. Did you changed that setting for all panels?

Have you tried to login in session after changing background to none?

When you try to launch gnome-panel do this:
 1) Open gnome-terminal (/usr/bin/gnome-terminal) not gnome-panel
 2) Then type in this command:
 gnome-panel --replace

You may need to do it multiple times as --replace command does not work
like it should. Running gnome-panel from terminal will allow you to see
 error/warning messages.

Sorry to say, but after the things suggested my 14.04 system is now
still unstable - in different ways than before. I also don't understand
under what username I am recognized and signed in. About half of the
time I click on something on the panels the panels all disappear now. I
can open a terminal, enter nautilus, and all re-appears; but they will
all soon disappear when closing a window or doing something. As is, it
is unusable and I'm back in 12.04

Again, I'm not sure if I ever made a new user or renamed mine and don't
quite know how to find out. Is there any way to repair my system?

Sadly, there is no guest account and I see upon looking that changing
that is not very simple. Yes, I found the way to save the changes, but
I'm doing it in under my login - and while the panels change to black
[there were blue and partly transparent], the fix works ONLY for ONE
next session - then I get the desktop with no panels and no terminal via
keyboard I'll try the launching of gnome-panel if it will do
something when logged in as me.

You have changed panel background to color and/or image right? If you
will be able to login in flashback session with new user without
problems then you need to reset panels background to default.

You can login in any working session.
 1) You will need dconf editor:
 sudo apt-get install dconf-editor
 2) Open editor then navigate to panels settings:
 org - gnome - gnome-panel - layout - toplevels
 3) There will be listed all your panels. Under each panel there should be one
more step - background. But only if you have changed background settings.
 4) Under each background you need to reset 'type' to 'none'

If background was only problem then now you should be able to use
 flashback session.

Sorry, I haven't yet been able to create a new user. Is that necessary?
For sure, doing what you suggested under me as administrator doesn't
work at all. The '+' button was not highlighted in the user panel.

Right now I can't GET to the LOG IN screen. I only see the Ubuntu with
the dots under it...they change color for a while - then freeze and I
must reboot. As I said, I likely now would have to reinstall grub. I
can't get so far to try your idea. I also don't know what it would tell
you. I want to log in as me in the end. For now, I can NOT access 14.04
- I've said that a few times recently. It happened after I logged in in
Gnome [never had before].

Have you tried to create new user and login with it in flashback
 session? Please try it.

OK. I got into Gnome and then dconf editor - made the changes you said -
but didn't see a 'save' option...so just closed [have NO idea if they
were saved]. Now I'm in fallback and the panels look the way I had
changed them to look [not the default black]. So don't know yet if this
will again now not work when I'm back inwill try soon and report.
Listed were many more than 4 panels and I only have 4 on three screens.

Point before folder name means that it is hidden folder. You can enable
hidden folders/files from nautilus preferences and/or pressing Ctrl+H.

If you can open folder then you should be able to launch programs too. :)
 1. Open folder from you desktop.
 2. Click on Computer
 3. usr
 4. bin
 5. here are most programms. You can try to launch gnome-panel, gnome-terminal
 or any other program.

My things are happening.I tried to change [or even see] the setting
for the background on the panel[s]. I hit the two keys and right mouse
button and ALL panels disappeared. Then I tried, as above, and with
great difficulty navigated [as in /usr/bin they were not in strict
alphabetical order and kept moving around too. Finally found gnome-panel
and double clicked and entire desktop [except background image] are now
gone - although the thunderbird program I had open is still [and only
thing] here. Can't right click on background and no terminal can be had
with Alt-Ctr-T. What do I try next? Did I not change the settings of
background to 'none' because there was no visible 'save' option? Will I
have to live with default panels forever?

No, what I meant was I didn't know how to find it [to navigate to it]. I
also now after having for the first time started a session in Gnome
can't get into 14.04 at all. I imagine I'd have to re-install grub or
otherwise fight with it. I'm looking into that disk from 12.04, but
can't locate the log file. Where is it. That path is not clear to me. I
don't know what folder has all the .program files. Sorry.

The comment was chatty. I'm such a newbee, I thought your 'email' to me
was an email and not something that would appear on the bug report.
Sorry. Forget the comment. It was a joke.

Yes, WHEN I can get into 14.04 and only have folders on the desktop, I
can click on them and view the contentsbut I can launch no program
that I want to nor open a terminal.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1355041] Re: [SRU] fglrx dependencies had conflicts in 12.04.5(kernel 3.13)

2014-09-25 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
I really don't think I know how to open a bug report. I have a question
here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2244716page=1 and think
the two are likely related - but I may be wrong. I'm really not very
advanced in Linux.

 Hello crazybear,
Sorry I didn't read through your description.
But I would suggest you to open a new bug, or put your question to the
 community (e.g. http://askubuntu.com)

If you're affected by this bug, please subscribe to it, only comment if
the proposed fix does not work for you.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1355041] Re: [SRU] fglrx dependencies had conflicts in 12.04.5(kernel 3.13)

2014-09-21 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
Help! Having multi-problems. Have been through no boot; booting into tty1
terminal only; now two out of three monitors working and the two working ones
are not a desktop, but clones. Seem not to be able to install the new drivers.
Getting many error messages that I don't understand. Also, on the internet I
found 3 [!] slightly different instructions on how to install these...and don't
know which to trust. Can't tell what is currently installed along the lines of
CCC, if any and am having very hard time using the computer. Also get a message
of it being in low graphics mode and don't know how to get out of this. They
well could be related. Someone please help me know how to install the new
drivers. I recently upgrated the VGA card and it needs these new drivers and
they are supposed to work in both 12.04.4 and 14.04. I have 12.04.4
Here are some of the recent error messages:

I fear I don't know how to even send report via Launchpad, I've never

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1006490] Re: Gnome Classic 12.04 panel applet “Force Quit” locks up system, hardware reboot to recover

2013-06-26 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
Yes, the one that come with the 12.04 install freezes all up. I can't
even get rid of it..I just try not to touch it. However, I added via
terminal another force-quit and it works fine. They just need to add the
working one to the install package - or make that one install properly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1194769] [NEW] Nautilus thumbnails disappeared and won't return in Ubuntu 12.04

2013-06-26 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
Public bug reported:

When I first upgraded to 12.04 from 11.04 [via 11.10] the thumbnails
were just perfect. I think [not 100% sure] that once when I had to
reinstall grub to boot, all desktop icons except folders and LibraOffice
docs are represented by clocks - not thumbnails!?! I have tried a
variety of fixes I see posted, but NONE worked, so far. I fear that
endlessly trying repairs could damage the entire system and I'd have to
re-install [for me an extraordinary amount of work, given how my system
is set up!]. I see one other person who reported the exact same thing
happen when they re-installed grub, so wonder how and if that was the
problem and how to repair. I have tried to edit the gconf and the
settings in Nautilus and a few other 'tricks' suggested. None had any
effect and luckily none further damaged the system, as far as I can
determine...but I'm left with a horrible looking desktop and it is very
difficult to find photos without the thumbnails!

** Description changed:

When I first upgraded to 12.04 from 11.04 [via 11.10] the thumbnails
were just perfect. I think [not 100% sure] that once when I had to
reinstall grub to boot, all desktop icons except folders and LibraOffice
docs are represented by clocks - not thumbnails!?! I have tried a
variety of fixes I see posted, but NONE worked, so far. I fear that
endlessly trying repairs could damage the entire system and I'd have to
re-install [for me an extraordinary amount of work, given how my system
is set up!]. I see one other person who reported the exact same thing
happen when they re-installed grub, so wonder how and if that was the
- problem and how to repair.
+ problem and how to repair. I have tried to edit the gconf and the
+ settings in Nautilus and a few other 'tricks' suggested. None had any
+ effect and luckily none further damaged the system, as far as I can
+ determine...but I'm left with a horrible looking desktop and it is very
+ difficult to find photos without the thumbnails!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 894347] Re: Force Quit applet never quits

2013-05-22 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1006490 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1006490

One more person to confirm this on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. It NEVER works
and ALWAYS locks up entire OS. I have to use button on computer to shut
down and loose things I'm working on. It worked just fine in 11.04 As I
use it from time to time, kindly make some repair or suggestion a
priority. Thanks.

Title:
  Force Quit applet never quits

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1) add Force Quit applet to panel
  2) get a large file (70 megs in this case) and rename it to end with .sh
  3) open the file with gedit. gedit freezes.
  4) click on Force a misbehaving application to quit applet
  5) the applet starts, but clicking anywhere does nothing. Pressing esc does
nothing.

I didn't find a way to exit this situation without killing gnome-
session from VT and this caused unsaved work to be lost.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1182615] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] Playback problem

2013-05-21 Thread Peter-and-Crazybear
Public bug reported:

I thought I configured the file so I'd get 5.1 sound, but I see only two
'bars' listed in the alsamixer, so assume it is only making it to two
speakers - they both seem to be going to the base, so I can't hear voice
hardly and music not at all. Please help! Thanks. Ubuntu 12.04 and the
problem has been continuous since upgrading from 11.04 via 11.10 - it
has changed [variations on bad] as I try different things...but as it
never gets good, I'm lost. I just pulled out one physically removable
sound card to see if that would simplify the solution...I don't see any
change yet. One other thing. In the system tools there is something
called change the default sound card. When I click on it NOTHING EVER
HAPPENS. I think these are connected, but don't know how to re-install
that specifically. Have several times re-installed all sound related
files, but it seems to configure itself the same each time.

Thanks for the reply and such a quick one! I actually had [before you
sent this] changed the line to read

options snd-hda-intel model=intel-X58

I also found a pagehttp://goinggnu.wordpress.com/2007/07/31/how-to-set-
up-surround-51-audio-in-linux-with-alsa/ which I followed and created a
new*~/.asoundrc *file.

The combination of the two has my sound back to perfect [where it was
under 11.04.

Questionsince it is fine now, I don't want to just erase the line
you suggest, unless there is some logic to it. Somewhere else, it told
me to put my actual chip by name [listed in an AlSA chip list], which I
did.

Sound is now fine, but it was NOT after upgrade from 11.04 via 11.10

why would one remove the line, rather than make it reflect the actual
chip?

Thanks
