[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2077530] Re: [nvidia] Gnome-shell 47.beta suddenly doesn't load, only black screen with cursor

2024-08-23 Thread Peter de Kraker
I do have weird large mouse pointers now, in Gnome applications. But
I'll file a bug for that if it persists. Thanks Daniel!

Bug description:
I am running 24.10 since some time. A week ago or so suddenly (after a
apt-get dist-upgrade) my pc doesn't boot into Gnome anymore, it opens
a black screen with only a cursor (and I hear a new audio welcome
sound that wasn't there earlier, but probably not related)

When I boot an older kernel, everything is fine, but I have no Nvidia
driver there, so when I install that with dkms autoinstall for that
older kernel, I get the same black screen as well.

So it seems to be some compatibility issue between Nvidia en Gnome-
Shell. There are more people on the Ubuntu Forums that have the same
  issue. (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2499944)

  I am running 24.10 with 6.8.0-35. AMD Ryzen 5950X, 32GB Rram, Nvidia 4070 Ti

Oh wow. Is this not going to be hotfixed or so? True, it's a dev
release, but probably many Nvidia users have a non working desktop now?

Ah ok! Is it likely a fix will rollout soonish? I am not actively using
it, and I doubt Nouveau really works on a RTX 4070? But I'll try anyway.

I booted into safe mode, and scp'ed the resulting files to my server. I
first booted into the failing black screen, then cut the power, and

Title:
Gnome-shell suddenly doesn't load, only black screen with cursor

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

I installed ubuntu-drivers-common 0.9.7.6ubuntu3 and rebooted, but no
change. (You pointed to ARM64, but I used/needed AMD64)

Title:
Regression: GTK statusbars look very weird on 200% scaling

Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I don't know where I need to report this bug, but it's quite a serious
  one.

On both livecd and installed version of Ubuntu 23.04 the statusbars of
some applications (for example libreoffice, Visual Studio Code, the
keychain dialog when logging in and more) are really small and weird
looking when using Gnome with 200% scaling.

  https://pasteboard.co/S0idNZig1HEV.png

It looks like the legacy compatibility mode of GTK for these apps
doesn't take into account scaling. This worked properly on 22.10 and
  earlier.

  System:
  Ubuntu 23.04 beta
NVIDIA RTX 3070Ti (nvidia drivers on install, nouveau I guess on livecd)
