[Desktop-packages] [Bug 776714] Re: Compilation artists should not be listed in artists view separately

2016-12-19 Thread Piedro Kulman
That's really bad. There should be a simple config file to adjust which
tag is used for each view.

But, well, the tag "albumartistsort" for the album and "artistsort" for
the single track artist exactly do what you and the librarian are
worried about - listing "Mike Oldfield" as "Oldfield, Mike" and "The
Beatles" as "Beatles, The" "The Drunken Sailors" as "Drunken Sailors,
The"...

Which still doesn't solve the capital letter issue...

BTW: If you autotag with the Musicbrainz Database these aren't created
automatically but edited by users. Check out the Musicbrainz Picard
program - it's free and does all that (heavily customizable by settings
and plugins)... yeah, you probably knew about it anyway, I get a bit
offtopic here in an official bug report... (but who care's... it's not
maintained anyway...)

Cheers, p.

Compilation artists should not be listed in artists view separately

Status in banshee package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

This might be a part of other usability improvement request, but I had not
found an explicit bug report for this.
Consider having a huge compilation album from some festival with hundreds of
tracks by different performers. This will make Artists view very hard to
browse. As suggested in related question[1] this could be fixed by putting some
text into "Compilation album artist" field. An elegant solution, but should not
Banshee have an embedded solution for that? Many other players do (see
screenshot[2] of Clementine, for example).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 776714] Re: Compilation artists should not be listed in artists view separately

2016-12-19 Thread Piedro Kulman
The fix is very simple:

Banshee just has to list artists NOT by the "artist" tag, but by the
"albumartist" tag.
That's exactly why this tag exists... alternativly "albumartistsort" gives the
list as the sorted list as used by librarians - both easy to use, easy to
implement

If no one wants to change the default behaviour just add an option in
which every user can choose or even configure the way the different
views rely on standard tags.

For information on tags as most people use them checkout the
"musicbrainz.org" project.

Also I recommend using lollypop, clementine, quodlibet or any other
music player/organizer out there - banshee is simply not up to date and
seems to be neglected, 2.6.2 is a two year old bugfix release...

cheers, p.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by "Album Artist" for guest/compilations

2015-11-02 Thread Piedro Kulman
No bumping please, no complaining for heavens sake , no asking nicely -
how dare you!

Well 7 years of an open bug is not fixed because the devs do not
understand the problem...

Sure they have any right to not do anything about it. That's why I
ditched rhythmbox years ago, just came around to check whether anything
happens here... lol... I guessed so.

Whatever the "upstream" procedure is here - obviously it doesn't help anyone.
Great system of developing! And that's why we can't have nice things.

You devs have done a great job 10 years ago, since then..., meh... not so
much...
Rhythmbox still feels 10 years old and users can not sort by album artist if
they so desire - funny kind of freedom

Cheers, p.

Rhythmbox sort by "Album Artist" for guest/compilations

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

For guest artists on an album or compilations Apple allows definition
of an album artist and artist for each track. Rhythmnbox only allows
browsing by track artists so many artists appear listed with only one
  track.

  Example, Red Book by Texas:

  1. 036 - Texas
  2. Getaway - Texas
  3. Can't Resist - Texas
  4. What About Us - Texas
  5. Cry - Texas
  6. Sleep - Texas featuring Paul Buchanan
  7. Get Down Tonight - Texas
  8. Nevermind - Texas
  9. Bad Weather - Texas
  10. Master Thief - Texas
  11. Just Holding On - Texas
  12. Red Book - Texas

The sixth track has artist "Texas featuring Paul Buchanan" whilst all
  others are "Texas".

I want to browse by album artist selecting "Texas" and seeing all 12
tracks on the album, not just the 11 that match.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2013-03-26 Thread Piedro Kulman
Annoying to see that still nobody cares!

It's been 5 years now with this bug with no intent to change it by the
devs - I don't use rhythmbox anymore for two years now.

I cannot understand the decision by Canonical to still feature this program:
it is unflexible, not lightweight in any way, buggy, not well maintained and
devs don't even care to listen to their users!

I will suggest in the Ubuntu boards to drop the program again and
replace it with clementine or guayadeque.

Congratz for 5 years of ignorance,
nice attitude dudes,
thx for reading,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read device-id ret=-1

2012-11-02 Thread Piedro Kulman
@pdqharvey:
That is strange indeed! I've downloaded the file (64bit) from the link in
@hotzeplotz comment #27 and it's name is
libsane-hpaio_3.12.6-3ubuntu4ppa1_amd64.deb. trying to rename it doesn't
effect the version that shows in synaptic. I guess the problem is NOT the file
of Andrea - it rather is the hplip package expecting the version you mentioned.

@hotzeplotz:
Is there any way for me to manually overwrite the internal version label in
your package?
It's working great just breaks the dependencies of hplip, so apt repeatedly
wants to repair this by removing hplip.

Thx for all your efforts,

2012-11-02 Thread Piedro Kulman
Thanks so much to @hotzplotz and @pdqharvey!

Peter has sent me the file with the old version labels that had been created by
Andrea before.
Now everything works and apt-get (or Synaptic) is willing to work with my
packages again ...

I am very glad this has turned out working and I hope someone will soon
incorporate the workaround in the official version of hplip.

thx for all your efforts!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read device-id ret=-1

2012-11-01 Thread Piedro Kulman
@Sarbeswar

Yes Peter is right (see comment above)! This is not fixed in the HP
Website version! After a long thread like this with the issue of the
problem not being fixed by the HP web download, plz, don't give
misleading information. I thought maybe I have made a mistake, because
you brought it up again - insisting it works, - and I tried again. But
as it turns out Peter's insight is still valid ... - so the second
effort was a waste of time ...

@ Peter

I have been happy with the file by Andrea, but now I have to deal with
some defect packages and dependencies when using syanptic. Do you have
the same problems and couls you solve it?

thx for reading,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read device-id ret=-1

2012-11-01 Thread Piedro Kulman
To be more precise:
Andreas fix works but when using apt-get or synaptic now I get the notice that
the package hplip is defect.
And I can't do a lot (not even updates) without repairing the broken
dependencies first. I can use dpkg to still install stuff but the normal
apt-get upgrade won't work anymore.

So how to make this workaround file by @hotzeplotz work?

Title:
regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read
  device-id ret=-1

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Fix Released
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
under Ubuntu 12.04 i could scan perfectly via the network from my HP
Photosmart Premium MFP (HP C309A), using gscan2pdf as frontend.

during Quantal beta and now on Quantal release, i cannot access the
network-connected scanner anymore: when opening the scan dialog in
gscan2pdf, the error message displayed is Error opening device: End
  of file reached.

on closer inspection, and having tried all the different backends
available in gscan2pdf, this seems related to the package libsane-
hpaio: if i downgrade this single package to libsane-
hpaio_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64 from Precise i can scan ok (only side
effect is that gscan2pdf hangs on exit and needs to be killed with
  signal SIGKILL).

in syslog, these are the lines that appear when using the newer
libsane-hpaio from Quantal when a frontend application tries to access
  the scanner:

  perl: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1
  perl: io/hpmud/hpmud.c 611: invalid channel_open state
perl: failed to open scan channel: scan/sane/hpaio.c 659
  perl: sane_hpaio_cancel: already cancelled!
  perl: io/hpmud/hpmud.c 611: invalid channel_open state

  perl: sane_hpaio_cancel: already cancelled!
  perl: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1

hp-check completes without errors nor warnings and correctly finds the
  network-connected scanner:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read device-id ret=-1

2012-11-01 Thread Piedro Kulman
Thx for your post! sadly I've done the same thing:

- completely removed all hplip related packages
- deleted cached deb-files in the /var/cache/apt-get folder
- installed the repo version 3.12.6
- used dpkg to install the @hotzeplot file (will try with gdebi but should be
the same)
- works great! But now everytime I want to use apt-get per console or via
synaptic I get:

hplip: depends on: libsane-hpaio (=3.12.6-3ubuntu4), but
 (=3.12.6-3ubuntu4ppa1) is installed
 please repair by using -f

Using -f with apt-get repairs the packages thereby removing hplip !

And I don't see any way to update any packages before repairing this.

thx for reading,
p.

2012-10-29 Thread Piedro Kulman
Hi there!
I have the same problem on Kubuntu 12.10, 64bit, fresh install.
Also a network printer 309a photosmart all-in-one with fixed IP - but as
stated before the connectiontype doesn't seem to be the problem.

regression is nasty - plz make anolder version available,
thx for the efforts,

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2012-10-01 Thread Piedro Kulman
Quickly installed the new version ...

No I didn't really expect this bug to be fixed ... it's too fresh ...
just about 5 years ... as it is 2.98 is still not usable for albums
with one albun artist but some somngs with collaborations ...

Now there is musicbrainz lookup which makes it worse cause musicbrainz
enters EVERY collaboration ... many albums now have more than one artist
but are no compilation ...

whatever ... devs don't understand or don't care - why should I?
It was just 5 minutes installing and uninstalling again ... but I will set
rhythmbox on the wishlist of Ubntu bugs to remove from Ubuntu ...

thx, piedro

of an album artist and artist for each track. Rhythmnbox only allows
browsing by track artists so many artists appear listed with only one
  track.

  Example, Red Book by Texas:

  1. 036 - Texas
  2. Getaway - Texas
  3. Can't Resist - Texas
  4. What About Us - Texas
  5. Cry - Texas
  6. Sleep - Texas featuring Paul Buchanan
  7. Get Down Tonight - Texas
  8. Nevermind - Texas
  9. Bad Weather - Texas
  10. Master Thief - Texas
  11. Just Holding On - Texas
  12. Red Book - Texas

The sixth track has artist Texas featuring Paul Buchanan whilst all
  others are Texas.

I want to browse by album artist selecting Texas and seeing all 12
tracks on the album, not just the 11 that match.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 253167] Re: Rhythmbox sort by Album Artist for guest/compilations

2012-06-06 Thread Piedro Kulman
THANKS TO ALL RHYTHMBOX DEVS

2.9.7 MORE FEATURES ! BUT STILL IGNORANT TO USABILITY !!! IT'S
YOUR PROJECT - IGNORE WHAT OTHERS THINK ...

srsly, I don't get why you devs don't take your users serious. Not even
answering to a 4 year all inconvenience that's a complete showblocker
for many users ... BUT MORE FEATURES ... doesn't look like a real hard
thing to fix also ... it's just a configurable browser view !!! ... but
you dev guys like to impress with NEW FEATURTES ... this bug here is too
big a challenge, because devs can't think usability and like to show off
...

I don't care anymore, gratz for being part of ubuntu again, go on
ignoring ... nice you use musicbrainz now ... a suggestion: PLZ DELETE
ANY ALBUMARTIST IN THE TAGS ALSO - NOONE CAN COMPLAIN ANY LONGER OF
HAVING NO OPTION FOR IT IN THE UI ...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 776714] Re: Compilation artists should not be listed in artists view separately

2012-03-19 Thread Piedro Kulman
...this could be fixed by putting some text into Compilation album
artist field

No it won't help. I write tags to the files, I tag album artist of the
Kill Bill soundtrack as Various Artists or as Kill Bill artist
collection (whatever ...). I make sure I saved the changes:

Still I get a list in the browser view left of the album grid including artists
like[dialogue], Nancy Sinatra and so forth
I have only ONE album in my collection and the browser view still shows TWELVE
entries!

That is still annoying and I said it elsewhere and utter it here again:
If someone doesn't grasp the problem here please check out Itunes
behaviour because it's very well thought through and the quasi standard
people expect to be at least enabled to list AND browse their music
collection ...

I really don't get why this is such a big deal: It's just about making
the browser view optional as the setting for the folder hierarchy
already does ... - the folder hierarchy setting offers
albunartist/album so PLZ add a setting option browser view where
users can CHOOSE their preferred browser behaviour.

using banshee 2.3.6 still no change on the issue. It's been discussed
for about 6 years now.

This might be a part of other usability improvement request, but I had not
found an explicit bug report for this.
Consider having a huge compilation album from some festival with hundreds of
tracks by different performers. This will make Artists view very hard to
browse. As suggested in related question[1] this could be fixed by putting some
text into Compilation album artist field. An elegant solution, but should not
Banshee have an embedded solution for that? Many other players do (see
screenshot[2] of Clementine, for example).

You are right and it's the same with banshee also.

The same issue not resolved in

- rythmbox for around 4 years ...
- banshee for around 7 years ...
