[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1987162] Re: 43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently

2022-08-22 Thread Richard Hughes
> If regular users can't easily fix the issues listed in there

You can fix some, but they do currently require the user to open up the
system firmware settings. You need the latest (git master) version of
fwupd installed to get the [translated] long descriptions of each
hardware security problem.

>, from the GUI itself

We are working on that, although this is only going to work on Lenovo
and Dell laptops.

> I don't think it's appropriate to display that in the settings app.

I suppose that not knowing is more secure?

> Yes, we can go ahead and hide this feature now for Ubuntu 22.10

It's literally your choice, but some of these are critical security
issues.

Title:
43: New Device Security feature is confusing and unhelpful currently

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
GNOME 43 added a new Device Security feature in the Settings app.

You can access it in gnome-control-center 1:43~beta-1ubuntu1
  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Click Privacy then Device Security

  The Security Events aren't clickable.

A default Ubuntu install only gets us "Security Level 1". The highest
  level is "Security Level 3".

There isn't anything an Ubuntu user can do to get to a higher security
level from the Device Security screen.

If a user attempts to get their system to a higher security level, I
think they could break their system since this isn't something we
  currently support.

Therefore, I think we ought to hide/disable the screen for Ubuntu
22.10. We can work towards better integrating this screen for Ubuntu
  in future releases.

I'm attaching several screenshots although it's worth trying out the
  feature for yourself too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1650783] Re: Zesty: gnome-software crashes on start if gnome-software-plugin-flatpak is installed

2016-12-21 Thread Richard Hughes
Can you show me the patches that you're applying on top of the tarball?
It looks like something is using GsFlatpak from outside the flatpak
plugin. Could you also please grab the entire --verbose log please with
no other gnome-software's running. Thanks.

Bug description:
  What Happens

  * From Ubuntu 17.04 Alpha, install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak

gnome-software will now refuse to start.

  * When I run it from the command line, I get this output:

I kill all running instances of gnome-software before starting it:
  $ pkill gnome-software
  $ gnome-software
06:15:12:0290 GLib-GObject cannot register existing type 'GsFlatpak'
  06:15:12:0290 GLib g_once_init_leave: assertion 'result != 0' failed
  06:15:12:0290 GLib-GObject g_object_new: assertion 'G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT
(object_type)' failed

I am unable to reproduce this crash on Debian. Installing gnome-
  software-plugin-flatpak there works fine.

If we can't fix this, I believe we have no choice but to disable the
Flatpak plugin. Installing something from the Ubuntu archives can't be
allowed to break such a critical app.

  Other things I've tried
  ===
  - Rebasing the Ubuntu patches on top of 3.22.4 instead of 3.22.2
  - Building the PackageKit plugin instead of Ubuntu's custom apt plugin

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Corrupt yaml data is causing consumers of appstream data (such as
gnome-software or fwupd) to get stuck in a spin and consume CPU and
  battery.

  [Test Case]

   * Introduce corrupt data into /var/lib/app-info/yaml/
   * Execute sudo /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/fwupd/fwupd -v
   * Check CPU usage calms down after initialization

  [Regression Potential]

   * This patch has been backported from a newer stable release upstream.
   * Due to the nature of backporting, it doesn't directly apply to Ubuntu and
will need some adjustments made.
   * Regressions would occur in gnome-software not displaying software or fwupd
not running properly.

  Original bug report:

fwupd process has been consuming 100% of my CPU for several days now

   * Introduce corrupt data into /var/lib/app-info/yaml/
   * Execute sudo /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/fwupd/fwupd -v

  [Other Info]

  Original bug report:

fwupd process has been consuming 100% of my CPU for several days now
(IBM Thinkpad x250 running fully updated 16.04).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1591868] Re: fwupd consuming 100% CPU

2016-08-18 Thread Richard Hughes
I've further extended Anders patch to return a helpful GError:
https://github.com/hughsie/appstream-
glib/commit/64029dfe02b85afe611a279380a84fca51208d4c

I've rolled up these three patches into one and backported to the stable
branch in: https://github.com/hughsie/appstream-
glib/commit/60033e61394562d706e703ad33e0d7e6583d83ce

I guess pulling that last commit into 16.04 makes sense, if nothing else
so it pinpoints where exactly and why the file is corrupt.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1591868] Re: fwupd consuming 100% CPU

2016-08-17 Thread Richard Hughes
There's a workaround here: https://github.com/hughsie/appstream-
glib/commit/2ec31bac7bd77e7b39c502276f4acec21ed9d576

Although, whatever wrote that invalid YAML file needs to be fixed, or
gnome-software is going to show very few applications...

Can someone upload a copy of /var/lib/app-info/yaml/de.archive.ubuntu

that makes "appstream-util search foo" crash please.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1589585] Re: Ubuntu Software tab Installed refreshing endlessly every 2 seconds

2016-06-17 Thread Richard Hughes
I'd be interested to hear if the no-open-device fix for fwupd would also
help here, although this does look like the device reconnecting wildly
(hardware issue?) like Mario said.

Ubuntu Software tab Installed refreshing endlessly every 2 seconds

Bug description:
I have fresh installed Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop 32-bit. After each install
for years one of the first thing I do is uninstall some of the
applications that I don't need to preserve some downloading/installing
of applications that I don't need.

I opened Ubuntu Software, click on Installed tab and now the problem
appears. Every two seconds whole screen gets to gray and refreshing
appears which takes 2 seconds. This loops endlessly. It is very
frustrating, because Ubuntu Software is unusable in my case.

I have asked the question on forum:
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2326701=13498876 and one of
suggestion was to remove the software and install it back.

  I did:
  sudo apt install gnome-software
  sudo apt purge gnome-software
  sudo apt autoremove
  sudo apt autoclean
  sudo apt install gnome-software

Started Ubuntu Software and the problem remains the same.

P.S. New problem appeared now Ubuntu Software icon on Launcher is not
the same (orange color), but it has changed (white color). But this is
  not huge problem, just annoyance.

   * Checks for apt updates using apt or apt-get also update the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 966704] Re: Settings schema org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates is missing

2012-03-29 Thread Richard Hughes
Sebastien, that's not really the way you disable things in g-s-d. Schema
can't be shipped by other programs into the g-s-d namespace. If you want
to disable shipping the auto-updates plugin that's fine, but the schema
has to be installed otherwise other programs that rely on it are going
to start crashing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2011-10-31 Thread Richard Hughes
I'm pretty sure some of you will be fixed by this upstream commit:

commit b971b43c45bef9251e1d6389716b9fbe107802c7
Author: Leonardo Robol l...@robol.it
Date: Wed Oct 19 17:13:12 2011 +0100

Use linear regression to get better predicted battery times

For hardware that has no rate data we use the differences in charge over a
time
period to work out the effective rate. Using linear regression this
estimation
is much more realistic.

To do this, introduce a simple circular buffer and use an index to calculate
the rate on each update.

It looks for all the world like the underlying values are being held
