[Desktop-packages] [Bug 545778] Re: xul-ext-lightning is only available in English

2018-10-16 Thread Rolando Gorgs
The Thunderbird people don't provide current Lightning versions in their
AddOn repository anymore because they integrated Lightning in their
Thunderbird builds. It is a real shame that this localization issue
persists for nearly one decade now. Because of this shortcoming (missing
translations for xul-ext-lightning) the old "workaround" is present in a
lot of local language ubuntu community wikis. At this moment you only
have the choice between using outdated Thunderbird with localized (old)
Calendar or using current Thunderbird without calendar localization. So
PLEASE fix this bug asap and don't wait another 8 years!

here you only get betas of Lightning and not the final versions. And
also no automated updates at all. So this can only be a temporary
limited workaround.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 545778] Re: xul-ext-lightning is only available in English

2018-10-18 Thread Rolando Gorgs
I don't see any progress here. Meanwhile some corresponding Bugs at
Thunderbird's Bugzilla have been closed because this localization issue
is a packaging problem and they decided not to provide any new
(localized) Lightning versions via AddOn functionality because they
already ship it with thunderbird. But ubuntu doesn't. Fact is that there
is no way (aside from extracting lightning from the official Thunderbird
distributioin) to have Thunderbird with localized calendar in ubuntu.

This package bug should have been resolved 8,5 years ago but the users
were pushed to install lightning from AddOns instead (a dirty workaround
in my eyes). Now this option finally disappeared and nobody seems to
care because this is such an old bug?!?

This is so frustrating. :(

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2029913] Re: [SRU request] Update Thunderbird to 115.x (as 102.x is EOL later this month)

2023-08-31 Thread Rolando Gorgs
I installed "thunderbird - 1:115.2.0+build2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1~mt1" from
thunderbird-next on my Jammy test VM. Played around but didn't find any
errors. Thunderbird 115 and all my Addons work as expected. Is there
anything special to test? If not, I'd ask you to push the 115.2 update!

Thunderbird 115.0 came out 11 weeks ago, first confirmed working Test
build 6 weeks ago but after that the focus seems to have shifted back
from bringing TB 115 towards TB 102 maintenance and fighting evil button
colors.

Now, when Mozillas transition phase is completely over, the first real
show stopper pops up?!?

This is exactly, what S. Auer described in many words as "wrong priorities".
Major Thunderbird package updates have been going like this for many years now.
I am really disappointed. :(

All relevant Lightning versions for current Thunderbird 60.x have been
uploaded to Thunderbird addons page:

So localized Lightning can be downloaded and installed again.
I can confirm this workaround is working!

Let this never ending story take its next round ...

2019-02-09 Thread Rolando Gorgs
Use your Eyes, Elbarbudo!!! :-)

Newest Thunderbird version in Ubuntu 18.04 is 60.4.0 and
lightning-6.2.5-sm+tb.xpi requires at least 60.5. You need
lightning-6.2.4-sm+tb.xpi (or an older one depending on your
Thunderbird) - all aviable on the same website.

Two ways to get it right:
- Check your Thunderbird version and Download the right Lightning using your
Browser.
OR
- Use Thunderbird>Menu>Addons>search to download it. Then the right version is
chosen automatically.

I'd use the second way for convenience. The link I provided was just for
reference.

As long as the Thunderbird people provide Lightning-Updates as Addon,
this method IS update proof. (But nobody knows, how long they will do
that because officially Lightning is shipped as part of Thunderbird
now.)

This method may work for the next months(years?) but you are right: We
finally need a real solution for this localization f**kup. :-/

2021-02-07 Thread Rolando Gorgs
At Fosdem 21 conference it was announced that next summer Thunderbird 91
will be released, which again will include fundamental changes. My
impression is that this time many months have been wasted because of
unclear procedures and responsibilities - not because of unsolvable
technical problems. (I hope we will see Thunderbird 78 before version 91
is out... - just kidding)

@osomon: Thank you Olivier for taking care of this issue.
Would you please write a short post mortem after the successful backport, where
the difficulties have been, what steps to take and what responsible persons to
contact to solve such a situation in future? This will definitely not be the
last major Thunderbird update that needs to be back ported to LTS.

I can confirm that the new PGP solution is working flawlessly in
thunderbird 1:78.7.1+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1.

I personally don't _like_ this new integrated pgp approach but it works
as intended. Hope there will be more enigmail feeling soon but well,
this back port seems to be ready for production.

I've tested this on a virtualbox vm with ubuntu 20.04.1 and focal-
proposed enabled.

thank you very much for your efforts but I have to bring this up here:
Having "some general friction with following upstream" seems to be an ongoing

Transition from TB 68 to 78 left users of ubuntus latest LTS without security
updates for over 6 months
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1895643

>From TB 78 to 91 the (un)security gap for (latest) LTS users has been over 4
>months
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1949605

and now in the transition between TB 91 and 102 we are already over 3
months without security updates.

All this for the at that points of time latest Ubuntu LTS. Older LTS
have/had to wait even longer for security updates.

At the same time unpatched security vulnerabilities and CVEs are popping
up more and more.

I've been watching this misery for years now and I really appreciate
Olivier's efforts, but there seems to be something fundamentally wrong
here.

Besides browsers, mail clients are the second most exposed user
applications and a classic gateway for malware. It is unacceptable that
Thunderbird regularly exists unpatched for so long periods of time. This
sheds a very bad light on Ubuntu's security.

I know that there are optional Snaps but the vast majority of users
stick with the pre-installed programs and are led to believe that they
will receive regular updates this way. And they should be right about
that.

So what can be done to fix this issue once and for all?

/edit: and how long will it take this time?

Title:
  Security updates missing after 91.11.0

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Upstream released Thunderbird 91.11.0 on June 28, 2022.
It's now at 91.13.1 from September 19, 2022. The release notes say:
"By popular demand, Thunderbird 91.13.1 contains important security updates
that shipped in Thunderbird 102.2.1. Users are encouraged to update as soon as
possible."
  Source: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/91.13.1/releasenotes/

Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy (but also the other supported LTS) still has Thunderbird
91.11.0 (1:91.11.0+build2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1) without the security fixes after
91.11.0.
The package should be updated to 91.13.1.

Given that it has been three months without security updates, there
seems to be some general friction with following upstream.

Backport Thunderbird 91 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in thunderbird source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released
Status in thunderbird source package in Focal:
  Fix Released
Status in thunderbird source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Similarly to bug #1895643, which was about upgrading thunderbird from
68 to 78 in all supported Ubuntu releases, this bug is to track the
update from thunderbird 78 to 91 in hirsute, focal and bionic.

The rationale is that series 78 will soon be out of support (the last
release, 78.14.0, was made public on September 7, 2021).

Thunderbird follows the Firefox ESR release cycle, and the
next/current series is 91 (already available in impish and jammy).

  User-facing announcement: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/thunderbird-
  lts-update-78-to-91/25391.
