[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1878105] Re: [nvidia] Xorg crashes in ?? from FreeCursor() from ChangeWindowAttributes()

2020-09-29 Thread SR
Looks like it the crash has been prevented, at least in 450.66 from Ubuntu
repository, 20.04.1.
But the cursor size setting looks limited now :

If I use Setting GUI and go to the Universal Access > Cursor Size
setting, I’m displayed five cursors to choose from. If I select one of
the three smallest, the cursor size is immediately set to the selected
size. If I select one of the two biggest, the cursor size remains the
biggest of the three previous sizes (named « large »).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1878278] Re: Xorg freeze after mouse pointer size change

2020-09-29 Thread SR
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1878105 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1878105

The crash does not occur anymore, at least with 450.66 from Ubuntu repository.
Still, there is a limitation introduced, and the Settings value for the cursor
size is not used, as I have described in
https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/quadro-p2000-440-64-crash-under-ubuntu/123718/6
 :

If I use Setting GUI and go to the Universal Access > Cursor Size
setting, I’m displayed five cursors to choose from. If I select one of
the three smallest, the cursor size is immediately set to the selected
size. If I select one of the two biggest, the cursor size remains the
biggest of the three previous sizes (named « large »).

Title:
Xorg freeze after mouse pointer size change

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I've attempted to change the size of my mouse pointer (Settings /
Universal Access / Cursor Size) from the default. As soon as I did
this the desktop froze and eventually turned black.

I could ssh in and would see the Xorg process consuming 100% cpu (per
top). After killing -9 that Xorg process, and resetting dconf reset
/org/gnome/desktop/interface/cursor-size I could log in to a new
  session.

This seems reproducible, i.e. setting up pointer size again would give
  me the same symptoms.

Apport probably collected this but jic, could see this in Xorg.log:

Well, I'm confused : how can I make this report useful ? Or is it
worthless that I create such reports ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1879625] Re: [Precision 5530, Realtek ALC3266] No sound after reboot until headphones are unplugged and plugged back in

2020-05-20 Thread SR
Hi @hui.wang, thanks for your interest. AFAIU, the bug I report is the opposite
of #1876065. In my case, it always works when I plug in the headphones after
unplugging them.
The reported bug very looks like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1442428 which was, I
presume, caused by another root cause as it has been fixed.

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have plugged in my Dell precision 5530 laptop a 4k HDMI screen.
Using it with 200% zoom makes xorg crash.
I have used proprietary 430, and changed to recommended proprietary 435
nvidia driver.
As the system was still very unstable (no to say unusable) I had a go with
440 from ppa.
I also ensured that my system was up to date doing a sudo apt-get update and
upgrade. I was suprised to discover a few packages that needed an upgrade
although I had previously used the Software Updater tool. Maybe I was doing
something wrong.
Anyway, with these updates and the newer 440 driver, I have successfully
worked a day (sparsely) without problem, and using only 100% zoom.
As a test, I decided to try to set the zoom to 200% (through devices >
display, and I have only the external display enabled).
After several minutes, I clicked on the « full screen » icon to maximize a
shell, and the PC froze.
It was so close to my change in the zoom ratio, that I suspect this is
related.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1868396] Re: crashes or freezes with nividia/xorg

2020-03-24 Thread SR
FWIW, I have no crash selecting « Nouveau » driver for nvidia GPU.
But doing so, I'm unable to configure correctly opengl in a chroot from where I
launch graphical tools in a Jessie. I can with the NVDIA installer.
Bug set back to « New » as I've completed it the most I could.

Sorry to spam, but with « crash », I mean non-responsive PC, not being
able to change terminal using key shortcuts, no ssh access, noisy fans.
No crash in /var/crash/.

  crashes or freezes with nividia/xorg

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It was so close to my change in the zoom ratio, that I suspect this is
related.

Please also note this (probably useless) information : I have no problem
at all with this screen and zoom ratio on my old desktop PC using 18.04
and 390 open source nvidia drivers.

2020-03-23 Thread SR
For the record these already exist :
-rw-r- 1 stan whoopsie 16008226 mars 19 09:16
_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.1000.crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 stan whoopsie0 mars 19 09:16

-rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 37 mars 19 09:16
_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.1000.uploaded
If I re-run the tool, it tells me that 19.10 had suffered an internal error. I
click send and… that's all.

I've got this now :
-rw--- 1 root root 128 mars 23 08:12 whoopsie-id

Going to the mentionned URL, I find tons of crashes, notably chrome, and
the latest is xorg. Here is the link to the latest crash :

https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/f0b02e76-69b9-11ea-aa6e-fa163e983629

Hope I'm giving you the right information.

I also ensured that my system was up to date doing a sudo apt-get update and
upgrade. I was suprised to discover a few packages that needed an upgrade
although I had previously used the Software Updater tool. Maybe I was doing
something wrong.
Anyway, with these updates and the newer 440 driver, I have successfully worked
a day (sparsely) without problem, and using only 100% zoom.
As a test, I decided to try to set the zoom to 200% (through devices > display,
and I have only the external display enabled).
After several minutes, I clicked on the « full screen » icon to maximize a
shell, and the PC froze.
It was so close to my change in the zoom ratio, that I suspect this is related.

dmesg shew me that NVRM had a problem :

After such an event, the previous days, the system became unstable, and
I have got problems with other devices such as audio and network.

If I run the manufacturer self-check test, everything is fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1562219] Re: Unprivileged xinit wont start in unallocated vt

2017-01-04 Thread Alan Dacey Sr.
This bug drove me batty until I found this. Making a Nextcloud appliance with
Ubuntu Server 16.04 as the OS and I couldn't install a gui. Tried xfce, lxde,
and lxqt to no avail. Re-installed, tried again, and nothing.
Post #14 worked for me but a little different.

startxfce4 -- :1 vt1

Is the proper command to launch xfce once logged on.

Title:
Unprivileged xinit wont start in unallocated vt

Status in xinit package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If as an unprivileged user you launch xinit (or startx) to any vt
(EVEN IF UNALLOCATED BY SYSTEMD) it will fail as described below. The
only exception appears to be if the vt you attempt to launch X onto is
already logged into by that user. For many this makes running X
  unprivileged unworkable.

  --

When attempting to run xinit or startx after upgrading from 14.04 to
16.04 it will not work. There seems to be some sort of permission
issue. I have seen another person with this issue as well here:

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/749370/ubuntu-16-04-xf86openconsole-
  cannot-open-virtual-console-2?newreg=ba376d7a182d44608ed4675346b1ed74

An example is when attempting to launch kodi, which worked prior to
  the upgrade:

  xinit /usr/bin/kodi --standalone -- -nocursor :0

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1242861] [NEW] Opening a vpn connection shows wrong icon

2013-10-21 Thread Alan Dacey Sr.
Public bug reported:

Using an OpenVPN connection in network-manager 0.9.8.0-0ubuntu22. Fresh
install of Kubuntu 13.10. When connected to the vpn, the icon displayed
is the 'no connection' one with the red circle. This is for both wired
and wireless.

Expected:
To see the vpn lock icon

What Happened:
The 'no connection' icon was displayed

Notes:
-This may be related to the network monitor widget not showing any tap0
traffic.
-The vpn connection was indeed active, checked using the ifconfig command
repeatedly and it showed the packet counts changing.

More information on request.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 992654] [NEW] package firefox 12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2012-05-01 Thread Saverio J Marasco (Sr)
Public bug reported:

You are using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011
and supported until October 2012.

re-installation crashed during re-install due to strange problems ...
the following errors were listed at the end og the install, in a dialog
marked 'errors were encountered' or something akin to that:

E: chromium-browser: subprocess installed post-installation script returned
error exit status 2
E: chromium-browser-l10n: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: firefox: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2
E: adobe-flashplugin: subprocess installed post-installation script returned
error exit status 2
E: bsd-mailx: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2
E: backupninja: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: firefox-gnome-support: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: fastjar: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2
E: jarwrapper: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: ncftp: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2

this was the result, after the second attempt to uninstall / reinstall
firefox and some associated libraries etc. .

I am currently looking into how to run dpkg to fix these dependencies

Also would someone tell me how to stop advice from coming in once
the problem is solved.

Thank-you

Ubuntu Rocks but I just havn't gotten to like Unity yet. Can't it be
possible to have Unity and also use panels?
