  hp-setup creates spurious cupsd process

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Fix Released
Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This is on a fully up-to-date Ubuntu 14.04 machine. Running hp-setup
to connect a networked printer creates a spurious cupsd process, so
that the system ends up with two cupsd processes running:

  Before running hp-setup:
  gpothier@zb-ale:~$ ps aux |grep cupsd
  root 1982 0.0 0.1 77144 4256 ?Ss 19:37 0:00
/usr/sbin/cupsd -f
  gpothier 1996 0.0 0.0 22016 940 pts/1S+ 19:49 0:00 grep
--color=auto cupsd

  After running hp-setup:
  gpothier@zb-ale:~$ ps aux |grep cupsd
  root 2037 0.3 0.0 90252 3848 ?Ss 19:50 0:00
/usr/sbin/cupsd -C /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
  root 2038 5.3 0.1 78264 5380 ?Ss 19:50 0:00
/usr/sbin/cupsd -f
  gpothier 2052 0.0 0.0 22016 936 pts/1S+ 19:50 0:00 grep
--color=auto cupsd

This causes a race condition between the two processes to save the
cups configuration when they are killed. In particular, this causes
the printer added by hp-setup to disappear after reboot, if no
  additional steps are taken.

Here is a full transcript (with a few CR/LF added for clarity):

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1455212] Re: IPP-over-USB support broken

2015-05-18 Thread Sanjay Kumar
Hello Till,

Sorry for the delay. While testing the applied patch in fresh Ubuntu
15.04 machine, the issue seems to be half fixed and can be still
reproduced. After comparing the setup with old Ubuntu system, I found
that, while debugging I added RUN{builtin}+=uaccess entry in
56-hpmud.rules file, which I forgot to remove while testing shebang
changes and hence I could see permissions getting reflected immediately
and ipp queue getting created immediately and therefore I thought that
issue is fixed. I am really sorry about that. Basically there were two
problems related to system-configure-printer.

ISSUE1: udev-add-printer script cannot be launched from udev-configure-
printer process (as python process throws an error unknown option -)
and hence automatic print queues are not added. Provided patch is
correct and fixes this issue. Anyway I am providing the test code (in
the attached file) using which this issue could be reproduced.

ISSUE2: Not yet fixed. Need to write proper udev rules for the programs that
create daemons. I have explained the issue properly in the attached file.
systemd-udevd worker process hangs for about 3 minutes and hence
1) Setting permissions to device node in /dev directory is delayed by 3
minutes.
2) udev-add-printer process remains in Zombie state for about 3 minutes as
parent process does not read its exit value
3) ippusbxd daemon (which is forked from ippusbxd main process before
returning ipp port) is terminated after 3 minutes, and hence ipp uri becomes
unusable as there is no daemon listening to ipp requests.

I could not spend more time to test the proposed fix (i.e using TAG+=
systemd, ENV{SYSTEMD-WANTED}=configure-printer@.service and then
writing proper service file etc etc.) due to lack of time. Please check
if you can reproduce the issue non IPP usb printer and also please let
me know if you need any other information regarding this issue.

Thanks,
Sanjay

Title:
  IPP-over-USB support broken

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in system-config-printer source package in Vivid:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The support for IPP-over-USB printers in udev-configure-printer is
broken, leading to the following two problems:

  1. If the printer connected to USB supports IPP-over-USB, the
automatic generation of a print queue can hang for three minutes

  2. If the printer connected to USB does not support IPP-over-USB udev-
configure-printer calls ippusbxd anyway and errors out, not creating a
  print queue.

This occurs in Vivid and Wily.

  [Impact]

All Vivid users with a USB printer will not get automatic setup of
print queues (printer does not do IPP-over-USB) or a print queue setup
delayed by around 3 minutes (IPP-over-USB printers).

  [Test Case]

Connect a USB printer for which there is not yet set up a local print
queue. Usually within some seconds a print queue is set up
automatically for it. No queue gets set up, for IPP-over-USB printers
it takes around three minutes to get a print queue.

The proposed package fixes this problem.

  [Regression Potential]

Very low. The patch is trivial and it affects only the automatic setup
of USB printers. Network printer setup and manual setup of USB
printers or printing on already existing queues is not affected.

In Ubuntu Linux we want to switch over completely to Python 3 and are
on the way to eliminate everything which needs Python 2.

Therefore I want to know whether HPLIP is already tested with Python 3
at HP and whether there was already effort on adapting HPLIP to Python
  3.

As Python 3 will also get standard in the other distros I would
appreciate very much if HPLIP could be switched over to using Python
  3.

My system is Fedora 12, and the downstream bug report is

This is with 3.10.2, while 3.9.8 works as expected.

above bug:

This bug _might_ be related to #555126.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read device-id ret=-1

2012-10-23 Thread Sanjay Kumar
Hello Peter,

I am not sure about the repo update but you can install latest HPLIP release
from:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html (automatic
installer) or
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html (manual
installation, if automatic installer is not supported)

Hello Till,

Can you provide an update on this to Peter.

regression: cannot open network scanner with error unable to read
  device-id ret=-1

Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing:
  Fix Released
Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
under Ubuntu 12.04 i could scan perfectly via the network from my HP
Photosmart Premium MFP (HP C309A), using gscan2pdf as frontend.

during Quantal beta and now on Quantal release, i cannot access the
network-connected scanner anymore: when opening the scan dialog in
gscan2pdf, the error message displayed is Error opening device: End
  of file reached.

on closer inspection, and having tried all the different backends
available in gscan2pdf, this seems related to the package libsane-
hpaio: if i downgrade this single package to libsane-
hpaio_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64 from Precise i can scan ok (only side
effect is that gscan2pdf hangs on exit and needs to be killed with
  signal SIGKILL).

in syslog, these are the lines that appear when using the newer
libsane-hpaio from Quantal when a frontend application tries to access
  the scanner:

  perl: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1
  perl: io/hpmud/hpmud.c 611: invalid channel_open state
perl: failed to open scan channel: scan/sane/hpaio.c 659
  perl: sane_hpaio_cancel: already cancelled!

  perl: sane_hpaio_cancel: already cancelled!
  perl: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1

hp-check completes without errors nor warnings and correctly finds the
  network-connected scanner:

ii hplip 3.10.2-2ubuntu HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)

I have a hp laserjet M1136 MFP printer. This has the printing , scanning and
photocopy functionality. It was first installed as M1005 MFP and it could do
the printing. But the scanner was not working.
To make this work I had to install hplip-3.11.5 as described here.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_professional_m1136_mfp.html
I followed the instruction. After the reboot it could detect the device but
was unable to download the binary plugin from http://hplipopensource.com/

I tried to install it again and after restart it detects the printer as a
cdrom which contains these files

  autorun.inf product_version SISetup.exe
  internalsw.exe properties.ini Strings.dll

This time I tried installing with sudo. After that I tried many times
installing and reinstalling hplips without success.

Can anyone help me in this regard ?

  Thanks in advance
  Dhiraj Kumar Hazra
