[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2016-02-26 Thread Seppo
I have the same/similar issue with Ubuntu 15.10, Unity, NVidia GTX 970,
NVidia-352 prop driver.

My main display (the left one) is 1920x1080 plugged in via HDMI, and my second
monitor is 1280x1024 via DVI. I setup my big monitor to be the left one, and my
smaller to be the right one via Unity display settings. On system boot, boot
screen and information is only shown on my smaller right monitor, left monitor
doesn't even get a signal. On login screen, login credentials are only shown on
the smaller right screen, with an expanded wallpaper showing on the left.
After login, the left monitor is set correctly to the left, but full screen
applications like most of my games start on the smaller right monitor by
default. I can fix this after every login via NVidia Xserver Settings app and
marking my left monitor as primary, then every game starts correctly on my left
monitor. I worked around this now with a startup script setting the primary
monitor to the left one via xrandr command.
Can't understand why this issue is still low, as it is a very annoying
usability bug. Hope this get's fixed in 16.04 LTS!

Bug description:
(Noticed on Ubuntu 14.04 beta 1 GNOME)
At work I have a second screen, which I prefer to virtually put on the left
side of my laptop screen.
Using gnome-control-center I can change the position of the second without
problem.
But when I disconnect the second screen (to work on another place) and then
connect it again
OR if I just power off the laptop and turn it on again,
the second screen position is set back to the default right position.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 218637] Re: Non-breaking space is easy to write accidentally and impossible to distinguish from regular space.

2015-12-15 Thread Seppo Enarvi
I make the mistake regularly of writing a non-breaking space instead of
a regular space, when writing shell scripts. It produces errors that are
very difficult to detect.

Bug description:
OS: from Hardy to at least Trusty.

When you use Finnish keyboard, you have to hold Alt Gr down to type |
or \ or certain other characters. When typing a shell command, you may
often want to enter a space character after such characters. But it
easily happens that Alt Gr is still down when you press space, and
consequently you type non-breaking space character U+00A0 (at least,
if you use UTF-8 keyboard layout, which is default in Ubuntu).

  $cd /tmp ; echo 0 > foo\ bar ; ls "foo bar"
ls: cannot access foo bar: No such file or directory
  $cat foo bar | grep 0
No command ' grep' found, but there are 16 similar ones
   grep: command not found

Besides it may be hard to see the typing error, as non-breaking space
character looks exactly same as regular space character.

A way to avoid such typos would be to use another keyboard shortcut
for non-breaking space. Besides non-breaking space should look
different than regular space in terminal emulators and in editors.

  A workaround in to run
  setxkbmap -option "nbsp:none"
to make type regular space character,
  and use `printf '\u00a0'` or `printf "\xc2\xa0"` to have a non-breaking space
in scripts and in command line.

Non-breaking space can be typed (in GTK apps) by u 00a0,
if needed, but it looks exactly like a regular space.
For me, would be a good shortcut for non-breaking space.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 759990] Re: gnome-terminal ignores default browser

2012-11-06 Thread Seppo Enarvi
I thought I have the same bug after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but
looks like the terminal link has just been updated to point to Konsole.
Make sure you're actually running gnome-terminal and not konsole!
