[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1707451] Re: udisksd crashed with SIGSEGV in g_mutex_lock()

2018-05-10 Thread Si Dedman
Thanks for fixing this guys & apologies for being dumb, but how does one
install the latest stable on a *buntu system?
1. Download & unpack udisks2_2.7.6.orig.tar.bz2
2. Readme says Udisks has several dependencies listed in
`packaging/udisks2.spec`. If you run rpm based distro, install the dependencies
by: # dnf builddep -y packaging/udisks2.spec,
But there doesn't appear to be that file in the folder and what if you're not
running an rpm system?
3. To configure and install the Udisks, perform following tasks: ./autogen.sh
Doesn't work on *buntu. sh ./autogen.sh says can't open; there is no autogen.sh
file.
4. make: there is no target.

Same problem using tarball from https://github.com/storaged-
project/udisks/releases

Cheers!

2018-08-01 Thread Si Dedman
Edit: be advised, the above install process means I have no cards
available & can't play any sound. Probably fixable, probably a pain.
Unless the bluetooth bug is a big issue for you, maybe don't bother
upgrading.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1675141] Re: lightdm crashed with SIGSEGV in munmap()

2018-08-06 Thread Si Dedman
Five identical bugs have been autoduplicated to here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1700391
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1720474
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1744450
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1756632
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1761702
All are "lightdm crashed with SIGSEGV in _dl_fini()" rather than munmap()
If these are not the same bug then those 5 should be merged and unduplicated
from this bug.

I've just tried this, rebooted, and no change. Thanks for any additional

Title:
Crashes while loading large library; 12.10 upgrade; ntfs drive

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  HI all.
I've been using rhythmbox for a few years and it's mostly been good to me.

  Backstory to this problem:
Had problems with Ubuntu 11.10 (i think) & upgraded to 12.10 which fixed
them, however it screwed up my dualboot setup (rant about how ubuntu upgrades
don't maintain grub config omitted). I had:
sda: ntfs drive, win XP bootable
sdb: ex4 ubuntu bootable, & my OS 99.9% of the time.
BUT: my music (~38000 songs) is on the ntfs drive, which used to (be
available at grub and) auto-mount. Rhythmdb.xml therefore has a catalogue of
all the files in the folders, with playcount and ratings info* which I don't
want to lose.
I've set the drive to automount with fstab (still not available in grub) and
the files are where they should be.

  The problem itself:
Rhythmbox fires up with the total number of tracks as expected and the list
of artists albums and genres looking normal in the music library panes, then it
does the library check/scan for a while (within normal time range for this
number of files) then crashes.

  Debug info thusfar ascertained:
rhythmbox -d showed me that it was crashing because a certain file hadn't
been seen in too long (as per identical bug here:
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/rhythmbox-devel/2012-November/msg00012.html). I
verified the track was present and uncorrupted and emailed the guy in the
previously mentioned bug to problem solve with him. He solved it by deleting
all the entries in rhythmdb. I backed up rhythmdb and tried this - no
improvement.

rhythmbox -d now shows (last relevant-seeming block - I don't know how to get
it to output the whole megalong text dump):

Having renamed rhythmdb.xls to rhythmdb_backup.xls, so rhythmbox would rebuild
the library from the watchlist, it still crashed.
I got the "ubuntu has experienced an internal error" box twice. I've just tried
opening the "_usr_lib_rhythmbox_rhythmbox-metadata.1000.crash" file, but get
the ubuntu internal error box when I do that too.

Info from that crash box:

2013-01-28 Thread Si Dedman
Ran rhythmbox -d, resulted in an error box: rhythmbox-metadata has stopped
unexpectedly. The library was still churning away in the background, then it
caused the PC to hang and I had to reboot.
The most recent crash file is usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash, 15.2mb. 10 minutes before
that was _usr_lib_rhythmbox_rhythmbox-metadata.1000.crash, 28.1mb
Going to try to move all my customised elements (playlists, database) and see
if I can get it to load clean.

Crashes while loading large library; 12.10 upgrade; ntfs drive

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:

  Debug info thusfar ascertained:
rhythmbox -d showed me that it was crashing because a certain file hadn't
been seen in too long (as per identical bug here:

verified the track was present and uncorrupted and emailed the guy in the
previously mentioned bug to problem solve with him. He solved it by deleting
all the entries in rhythmdb. I backed up rhythmdb and tried this - no
improvement.

it to output the whole megalong text dump):

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1103757] Re: Crashes while loading large library; 12.10 upgrade; ntfs drive

2013-01-28 Thread Si Dedman
Moved the .local/source/rhythmbox/ folder to a safe place, uninstalled,
rebooted, reinstalled, opened, and it popped up with the same semi-full
library and all existing playlists. I guess it's nice that my data are
safe (!) but surprising that they must be stored someone as well as the
above named folder.

Any ideas on any of this? Now including how I backup my settings properly and
uninstall/reinstall clean? Or if that's even worth it?
Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 394095] Re: doesn't deal correctly with renames outside of rhythmbox

2013-08-01 Thread Si Dedman
(IMO) The way to solve this is as per this ancient bug here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538549
Even if there's no agreement with other FOSS music players about a shared
standard (which would be a shame, for the record), it's so disappointing that
this has lain dormant for >5 years, despite being a thorn in people's sides
over and over again...

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I am reporting this here because GNOME's bugzilla is broken -
searching for 'directory' returns a blank page.

When you rename a directory in the Music library while RhythmBox is
open, it thinks that the files are completely new. This causes all
the tracks to lose their ratings, metadata, etc. The old tracks are
still seen but are now unplayable, and when Rhythmbox restarts it then
removes the old tracks as being unavailable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Open rhythmbox with at least one directory of music files in the Library
directory.
  2) Rename that directory.

  What should happen:

  3) Nothing changes - the tracks remain the same, their metadata is
preserved, and the paths to them are corrected in Rhythmbox's library.

  What does happen:

  3) The new directory is detected and the files are scanned, creating new
music tracks in the directory.
  4) The existing tracks are still present but unplayable.
  5) When Rhythmbox is restarted, the existing tracks and their metadata is
removed.

  Package and OS info:

This is present in Rhythmbox 0.11.6.
I use Fedora 10, but the bug is present in versions of Ubuntu that ship with
this version of Rhythmbox - e.g. 8.04
I have logged this bug here because it is not possible to search the GNOME
bugzilla for this bug. I am applying for an account with their bugzilla in the
hope that I can log this problem there as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 245924] Re: Rhythmbox tracks stats on paths, not songs

2013-08-01 Thread Si Dedman
Solution could also be as per https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538549
similar to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/394095
which would additionally solve this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/502474
as well as any (I didn't search for them) relating to migrating libraries
in/out of RB to other (especially other FOSS) players.

It would be truly lovely if this could be bumped up in importance - I
know that's an odd request, but a simple solution which writes playcount
& rating to the file would solve numerous bugs affecting many people in
one fell swoop. Hence [multiple bugs * low importance] = [single
challenge * medium/high importance]

Rhythmbox tracks stats on paths, not songs. If I insert a CD and play
a song that I have a FLAC of, and it can identify them based on
Musicbrainz checks or noticing the CD is in my library, it should
treat plays of that track of the CD as plays of that file, and mark
the play count and rating appropriately. Play count and rating should
also follow a file if it moves, perhaps by SHA1 sum and musicbrainz
  data.

I am not sure the implications of this re tagging, or inserting a CD
and doing a musicbrainz check... everything in here requires some kind
of fast lookup cache of such data, probably on an on-disk hash table
  (i.e. indexed database like sqlite).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1103757] Re: Crashes while loading large library; 12.10 upgrade; ntfs drive

2013-04-06 Thread Si Dedman
Hi again. Changed to xubuntu 12.10, still on rhythmbox 2.97, reloaded
library and it's working fine, manually added my 2 podcast
subscriptions, moved my old playlists file over & it works fine, so
everything's back up & working BUT: ratings & playcounts are still
trapped on my old rhythmdb.xls.

Any thoughts on how I can sort this out? I don't understand why the old file
isn't working - the files are in the same place. Notes on database format
differences below, essentially:
file size & 1st & last seen are different, and
play count, last played, rating, hidden & comment are absent in the new dbase.

If anyone can think of a way to merge my old ratings & play counts into
the new dbase, that would be much appreciated. I don't have much
experience playing with xml...

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 176696] Re: Allow for file tagging, ala F-spot

2011-09-05 Thread Si Dedman
David - a workaround, and a coarse one at that, but:
If you're anything like me in the way you use song ratings, you'll find you
don't use 1 or 2 star because you either don't bother rating (or listening to)
songs you don't like, or you don't have them or delete them. If this is the
case (and it's an easy check) then you may be able to easily blanket-tag your
music with 1* and hers with 2*.

Like i say, not ideal, but potentially a quick workaround.

  Here is my user case:

I recently started sharing my computer with my girlfriend. We don't
have one user for each of us (in short) because that's the way she
wants it, so we share most of our stuff.

A while ago we started merging our photo collections and we decided to
do so with F-spot. I tend to be quite selective with my pictures and
delete all the ones I don't like, while she keeps tons of them, so I
was worried that her pictures would keep me from even finding mine.
That was not the case, as I soon found I could just tag the pictures I
like as "David's favourites" and the ones she likes as "Susana's
favourites". That way I can watch only mine when I'm alone, and we can
watch together the ones we BOTH like by looking for "David's" and
"Susana's", or even easily delete the pictures neither of us likes by
  excluding both tags.

I was astonished by how powerful the tagging system really was.

I would like to be able to do the same with our music. Our taste in
music is quite different and most times I don't want to listen to her
music if I'm not with her, so basically I'm the one who uses Rhythmbox
and she plays her music by dragging the folders to Totem. I would like
her to use RB, though, and would like to have it tell the music I like
apart from the music SHE likes.

Is there any way to let Rhythmbox use tags just like f-spot does? I
think it would be very easy to put it into the GUI... just include a
"tag" option in the browser, alongside with the artist and album, and
a right-click menu option that lets you add a tag.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 841785] [NEW] Changes / edits to genre tags not saved on restart

2011-09-05 Thread Si Dedman
Public bug reported:

Have recently noticed this - editing genre tags in Rhythmbox seems to work, but
the tags revert to their previous state after a full close & reopen. Example
changes:
rock > Rock
Alternativ > Alternative Rock

I tried the 'rock' switch through a fictional intermediary genre ('Mangy
Balls') in case the upper/lower case R was causing the problem.

Any ideas? Haven't extensively looked into this yet (e.g. does it work
for all artists, does it happen with other tag fields) but i wonder if
it's the kind of thing that others might be experiencing but you'd not
think to look for, simply assuming that the changes had been permanently
saved.

Cheers

Simon

p.s. don't have full tech spec on me, but essentially: latest rhythmbox
& ubuntu version.

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: genre tag tagging

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 854108] [NEW] Dvds and avi's skip back between 5 & 15 seconds at random intervals

2011-09-19 Thread Si Dedman
Public bug reported:

DVDs and AVIs (i.e. all media I try) randomly skip back from 5 to 15 seconds
(very roughly) at random intervals, usually no more than twice per thing. Defo
not the fault of the media - sometimes playing new DVDs directly, other times
playing old AVIs I've had for ages. Haven't yet checked to see if it happens in
the same places on the same files. Tends not to be at the beginning of files...
Other than that...? Annoying to diagnose as sometimes I am and sometimes I'm
not running anything in the background, and I'm defo not touching / triggering
anything.

Natty w/ latest totem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878352] Re: 3rd Party Plugins Ignored

2011-12-01 Thread Si Dedman
It's deceptive. Unless i'm very much mistaken (open invitation to anyone
wiser to step in here!), v 2.90.1 which comes bundled with ubuntu 11.10
IS v3. And the version before 2.90.1 aka 3 is v 0.##.##. This [bizarre
situation] is how i understand things based on researching today.

So Matt, if you fire up RB, play a track, quit, reopen, hopefully the
track's not playing. Assuming not, follow the steps to install the
rhythmbox remember (name is wrong, but it's similar) plugin, from the v3
list, then repeat the steps after selecting the plugin from the menu.
That *should* work. I can't vouch for the others.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1315966] Re: banshee crashes on startup

2014-09-23 Thread Si Dedman
I've had banshee for ages but never used it; recently fired it up and
turned 'watch folders' on in the background, did nothing else, and
exited. The folder in question is /home/music and only has (3)
downloaded podcast folders in it. Now banshee crashes at startup as per
other users here.

Jose, where (& what name) is the config file you deleted please?

I'll post a log if someone knows offhand the command to produce one, or
where to fidn banshee crash logs if they're produced automatically.

Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1383902] Re: "Add files" greyed out, can't add anything

2014-10-21 Thread Si Dedman
Worked fine in xarchiver & I don't anticipate the files are the problem.
Unless it's supposed to run as root or something, and not getting called
properly, but I'm running from the system menu...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880233] Re: Missing library file handling is broken (another reason for "bpm detection never stops")

2014-10-26 Thread Si Dedman
FWIW: before migrating to banshee from rhythmbox (recently) I BPM tagged
all my files with BPM Analyser (window program) so all but the 8 .ape
tracks in my ~35000 track library are tagged, yet it still goes on
forever. Dunno if that's useful intel but thought I'd mention it just in
case.

Title:
Missing library file handling is broken (another reason for "bpm
  detection never stops")

Status in Banshee Music Player:
  New
Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Symptom:
   - bpm detection never stops
   - song similarity detection never stops
   - the first time this happens the console claims that a mp3 or ogg file is
missing then stops doing this
   - in the lower right corner of the banshee window a throbber turns
indefinitely eating up about 12% of CPU power on a intel atom singlecore device

  How to reproduce:
   - import new music to your library
   - use easytag, nautilus or the console to rename or delete the file before
bpm detection and similarity detection for this file has finished. If you have
a fast system it is perhaps best to deactivate these features first
   - enable the bpm detection and similarity detection again

Another way to trigger the problem:
   - Buy music from the ubuntuone music store
   - move it from "~/.ubuntuone/Purchased From Ubuntu One" to the music library

Activating the "re-scan music library" feature or plug-in or trying to
trigger a music library re-scan manually doesn't fix the problem

  Expected behavior:
   - If music is missing the respective files will be ignored but information
about them is kept in the library: There is a chance that tey reside on an
external memory that is currently not plugged in but that might return any
moment. For details see the documentation of rhythmbox and shotwell that both
work this way.

There is another bug report that nearly the same symptoms will be
triggered by having non-audio files (e.G. text files) in the library
but I expect it to really be a separate bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 474514] Re: Banshee very slow when interacting with track lists

2014-10-26 Thread Si Dedman
Hi Chow, all,
I'm getting what I think is a similar thing: 100% use of one CPU core after
saving any tags edits (2.4ghz dual core E6600); generally sluggish performance.
I've turned BPM detection off & podcast support off. I just ran the debug
command as per your advice to Myk, made one tag edit, saved, waited til the CPU
dropped back to idle (~15 seconds) then closed & pasted the (visible) terminal
to a file. The file makes no mention of the file I tagged though, which seems
odd?

Banshee v2.62 on xubuntu 14.10 (was the same on 14.04).

p.s. is there a daily PPA?

Banshee's great, but since I've added a few more songs it's become
  unbearably slow.

Scrolling up and down the library is ok, provided it's settled for a
while, However, whenever a song finishes playing or I rate a track or
skip a track there's a delay whist 2 of my 8 CPU cores are maxed out.
The UI takes an age to redraw or respond to clicks. The delay can be
just half a second, or sometimes around 5. This usually coincides with
  some network activity.

It makes interacting with the application nearly unbearable. Don't
want to go back to Rhythmbox, but might have to :(

  I have:
  * Banshee 1.6 Beta 2 (1.5.1)
  * about 5,300 songs in the library
  * Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic 64bit
  * 6Gb of memory and an i7 920 processor

Eesh, sorry Chow, I wasn't subscribed to notifications for this! Done
now - run debug script, found a file with an errant tag, edited tag,
saved, waited for CPU to drop, quit banshee, pasted all terminal to text
file, attached.

  Banshee uses too much CPU

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

While playing and minimized to the system tray, Banshee uses 65-70%
CPU and also pushes pulseaudio CPU usage up to around 30%.
Additionally, when using "next" or "previous" buttons Banshee CPU
usage goes up to 150%. Importing approximately 6000 songs took over 20
minutes, although the first 3000 or so only took about 5 minutes.

System: P4 2.8 Ghz with hyperthreading, 2GB RAM

Tested with latest Banshee from Jaunty repos and also the Banshee Team
  PPA version.
