2022-04-02 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Here I typed Cltr+A to Select All in the Yelp window and blindly tried
to move the selected content with the mouse.

Indeed, the documentation is there but it appears all white in the Yelp
window.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1914077] [NEW] Add Greek langpack to LibreOffice snap package

2021-02-01 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Public bug reported:

Currently, the Libreoffice snap package supports the following UI
languages:

English (USA)
Catalan
Chinese (Traditional)
French (France)
German
Hungarian
Italian
Japanese
Polish
Portuguese (both Portugal and Brazil)
Russian
Spanish (Spain)
Turkish

Greek is spoken by 11.1m people, which is a similar number for Catalan and
Hundarian.
In the Greek Public Service (for example, the judicial system), there are many
Ubuntu laptops with no upgrade path for the latest version of LibreOffice.

Can you please add Greek to the list?

** Affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1285444] Re: Login Successful, Desktop Never Loads

2020-04-06 Thread Simos Xenitellis
This bug report is from 2014.

I get this issue (return almost immediately to the login screen) in Ubuntu
20.04 Beta with the 5.4.0-21 kernel.
But with the immediate previous kernel, 5.4.0-18 works and I get a desktop
session.

Anyone who found an existing report on such an issue?

  Login Successful, Desktop Never Loads

Status in at-spi2-core package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Here is what I encounter
  1. Boot computer, boot proceeds normally
  2. Reach standard Ubuntu login screen, nothing seems to be amiss
  3. Enter user name and password
  4. Login disappears, just see the pink "Ubuntu 14.04" background

The desktop never loads, not even after ~30 minutes. The launcher
never appears, and the Desktop background never changes to the user-
  configured background.

  Other features:
  * Cursor works fine, it can be moved around the screen
  * No error messages pop up
  * ALT+F1 etc. can be used to switch to different TTYs; all files on the
system appear to be intact
  * Print screen button works (I will upload a screen shot when I get a chance
to copy it onto a USB drive)
  * Hitting power button pops up a window prompting the user to decide whether
to shut down
  * CTRL+ALT+DELETE prompts the user to log out
  * Desktop does not load on any user accounts, including the guest account

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1661590] Re: GNOME Software only supports running one application from a snap

2018-03-30 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Hi!

On Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) I enabled the `xenial-proposed` repository and
upgrade `gnome-software`.

$ apt policy gnome-software
gnome-software:
  Installed: 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.10
  Candidate: 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.10
  Version table:
 *** 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.10 400
400 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-proposed/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.8 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 Packages
 3.20.1+git20160420.1.ca63436.ubuntu-xenial-0ubuntu2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

I launched `gnome-software` and located the `libreoffice` snap package.
I clicked on the Launch button.

WHAT HAPPENED: LibreOffice Base was launched (the wizard for Base to open a
database).
When I do 'snap info libreoffice', libreoffice.base is the first in the list.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN:
It should launch `libreoffice` instead.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

2017-06-15 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@Marcos:

Thanks for reporting that the same issue exists in current 17.10.
There has been a change in the default settings in NetworkManager in upstream
so that the MAC address randomization is not enabled by default.
Currently, Ubuntu 17.10 (daily) has NetworkManager 1.4.4.
I suppose it will get upgraded to 1.6.2
(https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager)
which most probably has the new change.

@aleandro: Most probably something else is wrong with your case.
If you can connect for a bit and soon you get disconnected, then definitely
something else is the problem.
Can you file another report for your case?
You can do that by running in a terminal the command:

ubuntu-bug network-manager

and then follow the instructions.

Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  According to

https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-networkmanager-1-4-0/
there is a new privacy feature in the new version of NetworkManager.
This privacy feature can cause some USB WiFi adapters to stop working
while they used to work with older versions of NetworkManager (Ubuntu 16.10
or older).

The purpose of this privacy feature is to get your computer to report a new
random MAC address whenever you connect to a WiFi network.
This privacy feature is especially useful when you connect to public WiFi
networks, so that the operators cannot identify you when you connect multiple
times.

The downside of this privacy feature is that some USB WiFi adapters misbehave
when NetworkManager tries to change their MAC address repeatedly.
The result is that those USB WiFi adapters cannot connect anymore to the WiFi
 network.

  Original report follows:

My Panda USB wi-fi adapter works just fine on 16.10, but when I try to
connect to my wi-fi router in 17.04, GNOME network manager reports
"Connection failed." I did some tinkering, and noticed that my MAC
address for my wifi adapter, according to GNOME, is DIFFERENT every
time I make it forget my wifi settings and try to reconnect. Weird,
right? Any leads on a possible fix or work-around?

I'm running the latest beta of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04, kernel
  4.10.0-19-generic, GNOME 3.24.0.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-23 Thread Simos Xenitellis
** Description changed:

- New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
- Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.
+ Keyboard shortcuts are key combinations like Alt+F (usually opens the
+ File menu) and Ctrl+O (usually opens the File→Open... dialog box).

- Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
- parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
- layout.
+ There is an issue with non-latin keyboard layouts that the keys under F or O
(for Alt+F and Ctrl+O respectively) would correspond to some other character.
+ What should happen then? There is some smart functionality (at least in the
GTK+ library) that when we press a shortcut, it will try to make Alt+F or
Ctrl+O work, even if the active keyboard layout is not English.

- Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
- latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead of
- ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
- english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin layouts
- this workaround helps only with one of them.
+ For this smart functionality to work, it requires us to have as first
keyboard layout the English (en) layout. Then, GTK+ will be able to
+ check whether the shortcut makes sense for English, and if so, will run it.
+ All that even if the active layout is Greek or Russian or something else.

+ This report has over 300 comments and these comments include all sort of
corner cases that indeed shortcuts do not work. In general, shortcuts work,
+ but in specific cases there are issues that need to be fixed.

- Dear Ubuntu users and developers!
- Please include the following information to your comment about non-latin
shortcuts problems:
- 1. What Ubuntu version do you have (Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.10 GNOME, Ubuntu
14.04, Ubuntu 14.04 GNOME and so on), upgraded (describe version) or clean
installed
- 2. What keyboard layout do you have
- 3. What shortcut for keyboard layout switching do you use
- 4. On which session you have problems - that is one from Unity, GNOME Shell,
GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Metacity), GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Compiz)
- 5. With which program and its version and origin (Ubuntu repositories, PPA,
non-deb binary package from some website) you have problems.
+ What we need to do, is collect those corner cases and create new
+ separate reports.

- By providing this information you can make bug-fixing much simpler and
- may be faster.
+ Here are the corner cases:

- --
- For other layout switching problems introduced in Ubuntu 13.10 you can see
bug 1218322.
- --
+ 1. In Dash (in Unity 7), shortcuts like Super+S/W work (for example, Greek,
Russian), but they do not work for Super+A/F/M/C/V.
+ Report:
+
+ 2. Java GUI applications on Linux do not support shortcuts in non-latin
languages. This is an issue with Java and should be reported there.
+ Java GUI apps are not included in any of the Ubuntu ISOs.
+ Report:
+
+ 3. Shortcuts that use Ctrl on LibreOffice work for several languages (like
Greek, Russian), but has been reported not to work on Hebrew.
+ This should be a separate bug report specific to Hebrew and other languages
affected in the same way.

2017-04-23 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@nrbrtx: As noted in #329, the shortcuts for Super+A/F/M/C/V indeed do
not work on Unity.

However, the shortcuts for Super+S/W actually work. This means that the
functionality is there to make Super+A/F/M/C/V work as well. See the
screenshot at #329 that demonstrates that Russian is OK for Super+S/W.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-23 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@dror-sign: I have tested with Ctrl+O (File→Open...).
Indeed, when they keyboard layout is in Hebrew, Ctrl+O in Libreoffice does not
work.
However, Ctrl+O in LibreOffice for at least Greek and Russian works.

Therefore, this inability for Ctrl+... shortcuts not working in
LibreOffice for Hebrew is an issue by itself, that is specific to Hebrew
(and needs a new report that is specific to Hebrew and other layouts
that are affected in the same way).

Bug description:
New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

  Dear Ubuntu users and developers!
Please include the following information to your comment about non-latin
shortcuts problems:
  1. What Ubuntu version do you have (Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.10 GNOME, Ubuntu
14.04, Ubuntu 14.04 GNOME and so on), upgraded (describe version) or clean
installed
  2. What keyboard layout do you have
  3. What shortcut for keyboard layout switching do you use
  4. On which session you have problems - that is one from Unity, GNOME Shell,
GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Metacity), GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Compiz)
  5. With which program and its version and origin (Ubuntu repositories, PPA,
non-deb binary package from some website) you have problems.

By providing this information you can make bug-fixing much simpler and
  may be faster.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-21 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@xeron-oskom: Indeed, Super+A/F/M/C/V are not adapted and do not currently work
with Greek either.
However, what is working, are those shortcuts that I show in my screenshot
(Super+W, Super+S).

Here is a screenshot that shows that when you switch to Russian keyboard
layout, the Unity shortcuts for Super+W and Super+S are adapted
automatically for Russian.

The way that Super+W and Super+S work, makes me believe that these are not
hard-coded but dynamic.
Here is relevant code

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-21 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@nazar-pc: It is very important to care and make an effort to figure out what
is going on.
Your case is about Java apps, which is a distinctive group of GUI programs.
I am not aware of functionality that XIM ('setxkbmap') would offer the feature
to have working shortcuts with non-English layouts, unless it is some hack that
is specific to the Java app.

For your case, I highly recommend for you to create a new bug report under
"java-common",
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/java-common
with a title like "Shortcuts/hotkeys not working when non-latin layout is
active",
and describe in detail the problem and add your workaround using "setxkbmap".

Then, post the URL of the report here so that those that are interested, can
subscribe as well.
I'll then look to find the appropriate upstream project and link there.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@xeron-oskom: The Unity 7 shortcuts are adapted accordingly when the keyboard
layout is switched to Greek. See screenshot below.
When you keep pressed the Win key, you get that information text with all
shortcuts.

Admittedly, I just checked that a few shortcuts are not adapted for Greek so
they require specific bug reports. However, the general functionality is there.
Can you check what is shown in my screenshot, but for Russian?

This bug report has reached 325 comments. Any developer would struggle
to make sense as it is now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@nazar-pc: Java GUI apps on Linux is a special case. Firstly, they are
no such apps pre-installed, so it is somewhat a non-Ubuntu problem.

Gedit is written in the C programming language and is part of the core
GNOME apps. It is well-support and shortcuts work. It has been working
for 10+ years, since the multi-layout shortcut support was added to
GTK+.

This ability to use shortcuts even when the active layout was not
English, was added to GTK+ (GNOME) at around 2005, perhaps earlier. It
was the first UI toolkit to have such support for shortcuts when the
active layout was not English. Qt did not have it for a long long time
(has it been added there?).

I am inclined to close this report in a few days if we do not get a
reproducible case of shortcuts not working.
At the same time, I'll open (if they do not exist) individual reports regarding
shortcuts in Java GUI apps and other toolkits that do not have that support.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2017-04-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
I think this report needs to clear up. The title and the description
should get an update.

I am using stock Ubuntu 16.04.2 (i.e. Unity 7) and I have configured two
keyboard layouts, EN, GR.

I start gedit and I press the Ctrl+S (Save) hotkey.
In both cases (Layouts: EN (English), GR (Greek)), the Save dialog box appears.
Similarly, I tested with Firefox, Chrome and Chromium and it worked as well
(Ctrl+τ to open a new tab).

Therefore, it is working for me at least for these apps.

Is there anyone that cannot get this to work on Ubuntu 16.04?
If so, tell me what keyboard layouts you have enabled.
Note that the first keyboard layout MUST be "En" (English).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04: New privacy feature in NetworkManager stops some WiFi adapters from working (mac address randomization)

2017-04-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@Don Cady:

The source of the problem is the Linux kernel driver for the specific
WiFi adapter or perhaps the firmware of the WiFi adapter.

In most of the drivers, they have implemented the facility to change (by
software) the MAC address.
There are even tools to change the MAC address, like "macchanger". Or, you can
even use "ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55". Or, you can change it
with NetworkManager, a facility available for many years already.

A WiFi card can support many other interesting features, including "AP
Mode" (make your Ubuntu act like an Access Point), and "Monitor" mode
(using those Aircrack tools). However, it takes effort to reverse-
engineer AP Mode or Monitor mode, so many adapters do not support these
features. It is much more common in USB adapters not to have full
support for these features, and in some cases it is a deficiency in the
firmware (firmware files: /lib/firmware/, and nothing can be done about
it).

It is not clear how widespread is the problem. If you are reporting,
please include which kernel driver is used for the WiFi and also what
firmware is loaded.

@wolfy1339:
I think the MS Surface Pro has an (internal) USB WiFi card and uses the kernel
driver "mwifiex_usb". Have a look in "lsmod".

Title:
Ubuntu 17.04: New privacy feature in NetworkManager stops some WiFi
adapters from working (mac address randomization)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04: New privacy feature in NetworkManager stops some USB WiFi adapters from working (mac address randomization)

2017-04-18 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Jesse, I do not have 17.04 so I cannot test these myself. You guys could
help:

At https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-
networkmanager-1-4-0/ it mentions that:

Update-2017-01-25: with 1.6 release and newer, the default value changed
from “permanent” to “preserve” [commit],[bug].

The "preserve" default value means that NM will not attempt to change the MAC
address upon activation.
I just checked the source of "network-manager" on 17.04 (using LXD with 17.04
container) and it goes not have this update.

Could you please check in NetworkManager to see what is the default value for
“ethernet.cloned-mac-address” and “wifi.cloned-mac-address”, on a Ubuntu 17.04
installation?

I think that "nmcli device show" might show it. If not, try somehow to
figure out the default.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1661590] Re: GNOME Software only supports running one application from a snap

2017-02-07 Thread Simos Xenitellis
A note here that when you run "snap info libreoffice", the order of the
commands actually changes every time you run it. I suppose that snapd
does not have the order of the commands as given in snapcraft.yaml.
That's what I get with snap 2.12

A workaround could be for Ubuntu Software to pick the shorter filename
(for LibreOffice, that would be "libreoffice", the wizard, which is what
is expected to run).

  WHAT IS EXPECTED:
It should launch the LibreOffice wizard instead of any of Writer, Calc, etc.

  WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS:
  It launches LibreOffice Database.

  WHY THIS HAPPENS?

Ubuntu Software probably picks the first listed command
  (libreoffice.base), as shown in

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout

2015-10-10 Thread Simos Xenitellis
See http://www.whizzy.org/2015/09/big-bug-bonanza-16-04-lts/ for a sprint
to fix issues in Ubuntu (targeting 16.04).
Since there are patches for this and these patches work, it is important to
get the issue fixed during the sprint.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1445358] Re: Pulseaudio fails to run when system's language is in Greek

2015-04-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
The relevant message in /var/log/syslog is:

Apr 20 14:03:45 user-laptop pulseaudio[1661]: [pulseaudio] module.c:
Failed to load module module-alsa-card (argument: device_id=0 name
=pci-_00_1b.0 card_name=alsa_card.pci-_00_1b.0
namereg_fail=false tsched=ναι fixed_latency_range=όχι ignore_dB=όχι
deferred_volume=ναι use_ucm=ναι card_properties=module-udev-
detect.discovered=1): initialization failed.

What is says here is that insmod (or similar) was called with
parameters like tsched=ναι, and failed.

git blame says:
d806b197 src/pulsecore/core-util.h (poljar (Damir Jelić) 2013-06-27 19:28:09
+0200  92) static inline const char *pa_yes_no(bool b) {

+0200  93) return b ? _(yes) : _(no);

which means that about a year ago a change was made to make yes/no
localisable.

A quick fix is to make pa_yes_no() non-localisable again.

** Patch added: Make pa_yes_no() non-localisable.

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Changing the System Language in Greek resulted in the corruption of
the sound in the entire system. This happened when the latest updates
  applied and after a reboot.

I have attempted a new installation in Greek getting the latest ISO

If I go back (turn the system) to the English Language and reboot the
  problem disappears.

I have also tested another Language (Russian Localization) but the
  problem does not occur.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1244548] Re: Keyboard shortcut for changing keyboard layout does not work on lock screen

2014-03-28 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@minniegaliev-r: It comes out as obnoxious to post a comment like Why
importance only medium?.
It should have been a complete statement as in:

I think the importance for this report should be raised to High. The
reason is that if you get locked out in the screensaver while your
current keyboard layout is not English, then you are stuck badly. If you
do not have a mouse to click-switch to English, you have no other option
than to hard-reboot your computer ;-'( This is a big issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10

2013-12-15 Thread Simos Xenitellis
A bit of essential fact-checking:

X.Org/XKB consider different the shortcuts like Ctrl+T (latin t) and
Ctrl+Τ (greek τ) and so on. Because they are different characters.
Obviously.

It is because of gtk+ (with gtk+ input method) that shortcuts like
Ctrl+Τ (greek τ) work just like Ctrl+T (latin t). This has been really
amazing and usable, and we all like it. It's a gtk+ feature (if you use
the gtk+ input method), and when we move to different toolkits/input
methods, we need to make an effort to replicate the functionality.

Apart from an amazing feature, it is also a hack. It makes a mess to
those that use unconventional layouts like dvorak. Ok, those are a
minority compared to us...

In this report, the source of the issue is either not using the gtk+
input method in gtk+ apps, or non-gtk+ apps (which obviously do not use
the gtk+ input method). Also, there might be cases (I am speculating)
that keyboard filtering might mess up as well.

If you want to figure out whether the gtk+ input method is actually
working, you can type Ctrl+Shift+u (latin 'u'), then type aa and then
press spacebar. If you get ª, then the gtk+ input method is working for
you.

All hotkeys in system
parameters-keyboard-hotkeys-windows works perfect with any keyboard

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1246583] Re: All hotkeys of LibreOffice don't work in non-English keyboard layout [ubuntu 13.10]

2013-11-05 Thread Simos Xenitellis
I am running 13.10 with all updates applied. I have enabled English and Greek.
The LibreOffice shortcuts such as Alt+F (File menu) does not work either for
English, neither for Greek.

Can someone verify whether the shortcuts work for English in LibreOffice?
Because if they do not work in English either, then the problem is wider.

(if someone has enable just a single keyboard layout, does that make a
difference?)

Title:
All hotkeys of LibreOffice don't work in non-English keyboard layout
  [ubuntu 13.10]

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hotkeys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and
work in English language only. While writing in any other language
i.e. any Cyrillic, it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do
anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once
again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to
save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc.

This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. System Settings Text Entry.
  2. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali
(Probhat)]
  3. Now launch Writer.
  4. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by
pressing Ctrl+Space.
  5. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold.

  Error:
Font weight does not get changed.

  Expected:
Font weight should change to bold.

  Note:
none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to
subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc.

  Workaround:
The only way is to -
  1. change the keyboard layout to English
  2. then press desired hotkey
  3. then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali.

The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only
  typing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 992767] Re: Evince does not show comments from PDFs generated by LibreOffice

2013-11-04 Thread Simos Xenitellis
I also want to add https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60126 to
this report but cannot figure it out. If someone can figure it out,
please add it.

From a comment above:
The problem with both the LibreOffice and Latex generated PDF files seems to be
that they have a very small or zero volume /Rect field. The annotations in the
attached test case are in fact there. There is a very small area where hovering
the mouse shows the first comment.

Additionally, the annotations do not contain a /Popup field, which means
clicking them does nothing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1173217] Re: Screen edges are in the middle of the screen! AMD Radeon HD7570M

2013-06-03 Thread Simos Xenitellis
I get screen corruption and general problems as well.
Tried both free and proprietary drivers, 12.04.2 and 13.04.

The nasty workaround for me is to connect an external HDMI monitor, which helps
/fix/ the problem.
When Ubuntu tries to clone the laptop screen, this ends up fixing the screen
corruption, when using the fglrx driver (For both the HDMI display and the
laptop screen). I can then disconnet the HDMI display and the laptop screen
continues to work well.
When I use the radeon (free) driver, the HDMI display works find, however the
laptop screen shows artifacts (either 'split' screen or flickering).

Since both the free and proprietary drivers exhibit similar behaviour, it does
look like a common kernel issue.
Will try newer kernels.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1076298] Re: fglrx proprietary driver installation- Samsung 535U4C

2013-06-03 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@Adam: I think this bug report is duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1123024

I tried 13.04 with kernel 3.9.0-raring (from mainline PPA) and the problem
persisted.
I then tried Ubuntu 13.10 Daily ISO (has kernel 3.9.0.x) with a LiveUSB and it
booted just fine. This is with the radeon (free) driver.
I assume that fglrx should work as well.

2013-05-31 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Which versions of fglrx did you try? I tried with AMD Catalyst 13.4
(released a few days ago).

I manage to get into Unity, however the screen is not usable; there is
uniform corruption all over the display. I can distinguish though the
Launchpad and the indicators.

2013-05-31 Thread Simos Xenitellis
(continued)

I then connected an HDMI cable to the TV and automatically Unity appears
just fine. Nothing is shown on the TV, just the laptop appears to be ok.
Going for more testing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1094872] Re: Installation information cause letter format instead of DIN A4

2013-04-05 Thread Simos Xenitellis
We (Ubuntu-gr - Greece) are facing an issue that we believe is related
to the above change in the code.

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1158750

Specifically, what happens is that currently the code sets (by mistake)
the locale to 'el_GR' instead of 'el_GR.UTF-8' (or 'el_GR.utf8').

The default for a 'el_GR' locale (without .utf8) is to use the old 8-bit
deprecated encodings, which cause severe issues in a 13.04 installation. For
example, LibreOffice simply refuses to start!
The reason is that Greek text for Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/etc that come from the Greek
locale, are being read in the deprecated ISO-8859-7 encoding.

We are trying to test if this issue exists with other locales as well,
and also how to solve. It appears that a small code addition (adding '.utf8')
should suffice.

If you have any input, it would be helpful to get this resolved quickly.

Bug description:
  Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I switched to Debian unstable after problems with TeXLive installations
introduce about Oneiric.
As experienced Unix administrator (AIX and RedHat certified) I was astonished
not to be able
  to solve the problem.
After several attempts I found out that my choices given to the installer:
English - Berlin timezone - German eliminate deadkeys
yield without any reason to the assumption that the paper format is letter.
E.g. scientists in Germany allways use English language and Berlin time (i.e.
the real place being Germay),
which should clearly qualify to DIN A4 choice, so the choice for
/etc/papersize (letter) should be altered
to a4 under these (and similar) selections.
The behaviour is there as already stated since Oneiric - before it worked as
expected -
and is present in the latest flavour.
I currently work under Xubuntu 12.10 but have several installations
(including Ubuntu 12.10
[which is really unstable and Unity still not configurable] and Debian Wheezy
[testing,
the latter working out of the box without changing /etc/papersize manually]).
As this bug is quite clear I hope you can fix it before 13.04 - this bug is
really mean as the
real problem is hidden for the user and even when trying to change problems
relvealed in
TeXLive installation relying on the wrong set of papersize the TeXLive
scripts for that purpose
  are not working (Debian related).
But this is _NOT_ a TeXLive problem - when in Germany (Berlin time) and
setting English
  (i.e. /etc/default/locale being: LANG=en_US.UTF-8), papersize should be a4
and NOT letter.
Otherwise one should ask for papersize seperately.
If other data is needed (not think so - but anyway) please contact me:
 jochen.m.br...@gmx.de

Many thanks in advance for your help!

  JMB

P.S.: If I missed something - like an expert mode of the installer - please
inform me.
But as unexperienced users may have similar selections the problem should
be fixed anyway.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069186] Re: problem with backlight

2012-10-21 Thread Simos Xenitellis
@m-sigalas86: I notice that you are not using fglrx (does not support
your Evergreen graphics card). It's good.

@Rafał: I have tried that line and the whole screen highlights,
returning to the original brightness. I cannot change the default
brightness. I use 12.10 on the AMD 6230.

  Dear root owning overlords,

When using grep recursively I only get local results:

  /home/noob/fish_game/fish.c: struct fish_t eric_the_ fish;

  /home/noob/fish_game/fish.h: struct shark_t {
  /home/noob/fish_game/fish.c: struct shark_t_t mark_sw;

I declare this a bug for two reasons:

  1. The output is boring.
  2. The terminal has more than 2 lines!!! It's an unefficient use of my
screenspace.

I believe the reason for this is that the grep command only searches
locally for things I am actually looking for, I kind of expect the
results I get from my codebase and as such it removes any sense of
mystery or something new and exciting to spice up my dull geek
existence. That's boring, grep -R should also search amazon, so I get
  more exciting results such as:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1037180] [NEW] GSD should have an option to show extra keyboard layouts

2012-08-15 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Public bug reported:

xkeyboard-config has been remodelled and non-basic keyboard layouts have
been moved to the 'extra' group.

Ubuntu does not offer a way through the GUI to enable the extra group
for those users that need the special keyboard layouts.

How to replicate:
1. Click on System settings/Keyboard, then Layout Settings, then click on the
[+] button to add a new layout.
2. Try to find the Avestan keyboard layout. Although it was added last year to
xkeyboard-config, it is not shown in the list.

How to fix manually:
1. Start 'dconf-editor' (requires installation) and navigate to
'/org/gnome/libgnomekbd/desktop/'
2. Find 'load-extra-items' and enable it.
3. Now the Keyboard layout list shows all keyboard layouts, including Avestan.

What should be done:
- There should be an option in the Keyboard Layouts dialog box (in the
Keyboard settings) to enable/disable the extra keyboard layouts.
a. The text for the checkbox could say 'Enable additional keyboard layouts'.
b. The checkbox action would enable/disable the field
'/org/gnome/libgnomekbd/desktop/load-extra-items'.
c. The default should be not to show additional keyboard layouts.

** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 995401] Re: Ubuntu 12.04: keyboard layout does not change languages

2012-05-20 Thread Simos Xenitellis
I have Ubuntu 12.04 (upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha1) and I exhibit this
issue.
Here is my understanding of the problem and I would like your help to verify.

When you first install Ubuntu, you can select keyboard layout settings or
accept the default provided by the installer.
These settings become the default, and can be found at /etc/default/keyboard
For example, if you installed Ubuntu by selecting the US English installation
option, then you get the layout for US English.

If you later change your layout settings in the graphical user interface, the
file /etc/default/keyboard will remain as it is, and the GUI will be informed
that the user has a custom (different layout) that should be enabled.
I believe that bug is with the GUI not detecting that we have changed the
default layout, and that we now have custom settings.
This explains how in the keyboard settings you can see your new layout
settings, but they are not active.
You can force to re-apply for the current session your custom layout settings
simply by (for example) changing the order of the layouts and then changing
them back to the original order. In this way you can avoid opening the terminal
to run setxkbmap.

Thus, if you are affected by this bug, please check /etc/default/keyboard and
see whether your default layout is the one described in that file.
If my theory is correct, then a proper workaround would be to edit for now your
/etc/default/keyboard so that it matches your desired layout settings.

Bug description:
Probably this problem is reported but the ubuntu-bug system cannot
  trace it.

I have upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 which was a clean install. My
keyboard language-settings (in the login screen as well) were
norwegian and greek. However when I installed the 12.04 version my
keyboard-layout was changed to english but the keyboard layout manager
  was showing norwegian.

On the keyboard-layout settings I put the english(US) layout and I
removed greek and norwegian. Typed a bit and then put norwegian and
greek and I removed the english (US) again and chose the Alt-Shift
combination for changing layouts. What I get is an unchangable
  english(US) layout.

Important note: My keyboard is US-keyboard. I mean the hardware.

P.S. The ubuntu-bug system has a serious bug. When I was looking about
the bug on Google I could find the launchpad relevant subject. I
wanted to use the ubuntu-bug system in order to report my system's
details. Then I could not find the subject again through the launchpad
search engine and I was forced to report it as a new problem
