FFe: Update gnome-terminal to 3.24 and vte to 0.48

Bug description:
gnome-terminal and vte are still at their 3.20 (and 0.44) versions
because they now hard-depend on pcre2, but the pcre2 MIR (LP:
#163) has stalled because there is already one version of pcre in
main and it would be a major task to convert all of main to use pcre2.

So I reverted 3 commits for gnome-terminal and 5 for vte to make that
MIR less urgent. I am concerned about the long-term maintainability of
this approach - the vte patch is over 1600 lines.

gnome-terminal 3.22 and vte 0.46 have been tested in the GNOME3
Staging PPA for yakkety and zesty for months. I am not aware of any
issues from that. This is slightly different since I haven't tested
those versions without pcre2 until this weekend.

The development cycle for gnome-terminal and vte has been fairly quiet
so I believe it's safe to go ahead and update gnome-terminal to
  3.23.90 and vte to 0.47.90.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 874181] Re: brltty daemon prevents creation of ttyUSB0 device link

Status in brltty source package in Oneiric:

Bug description:
  Impact:
This bug is somewhat hardware specific, affecting all users of the USB serial
controller, device 10c4:ea60.

  Test case:
With the current version of brltty in Oneiric, brltty takes over any device
using the above mentioned USB serial controller, whether it is a Braille
display or not. This is because one of Brltty's supported displays uses this
USB serial control internally for ocmmunication. The brltty package in
oneiric-proposed has the udev rule for this controller commented out, allowing
other users of devices based on this controller to work properly.

  Regression potential:
All users of the supported Seika will have to load Brltty manually, as the
udev rule for their device is commented out, to allow other USB serial
controller users to use their device as a proper serial device.

  Original description follows:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, I no longer found a
'/dev/ttyUSB0' for my serial-to-USB converter. The device is part of
a Xilinx FPGA board and is a "10c4:ea60 Cygnal Integrated Products,
  Inc. CP210x Composite Device".

Every time I plugged in the device, dmesg showed the device coming up
and 'brltty' did *something* to it. At this point, no device was
  present in '/dev'.

  [ 5181.130942] cp210x 1-1.4:1.0: cp210x converter detected

  [ 5181.623749] usb 1-1.4: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by cp210x while 'brltty'

After removing 'brltty', the '/dev/ttyUSB0' device appears again like
  it used to.

This seems like a recent regression on Oneiric (or perhaps I haven't
  noticed it before):

On resume from suspend, the contents of the desktop are often briefly
visible before being hidden behind the lock screen. This is a
security problem if there happens to be sensitive information on the
  screen.

  =Analysis from mdeslaur=
  This is likely what happens:

1- Something grabs mouse: ie: virtual machine window, or GTK menu in an
application or an indicator
2- Screensaver attempts to start, but cannot get exclusive lock on mouse
  3- DPMS turns monitor black
4- User moves mouse, which turns the screen back on
5- Mouse movement causes mouse to get ungrabbed by vm window or gtk menu
6- Screensaver can now grab mouse, and starts

This is all related to the fact that X does not have an API that will
let the screensaver tell an application to release mouse and keyboard
  grabs.

After launching a Wine app from terminal or via gnome-do, it appears in the
launcher with the Wine icon, instead of its own icon. The title is "Wine Window
Program Loader" instead of the proper application name.
It can't be favorited since it will favorite the wine executable itself.
And obviously different wine apps are all grouped under the same launcher
icon.

See also bug #635223 about Wine applications not showing up in the
  dash.

-

A way to fix this is to make all the Wine generated .desktop file to
include a StartupWMClass value that matches the instance name of the
related program (generally the .exe file name to be executed).

So for example, a "Mozilla Firefox.desktop" file can be easily fixed adding
this parameter:
   StartupWMClass=firefox.exe

Wine should try to add this information at file generation time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 725434] Re: Nvidia drivers lead to extra memory usage for each process using libGL

2015-01-22 Thread Stu
The fix for this has been available for a long time, if it works - can
the cairo gl backend be re-enabled?It's been disabled for nearly 3
years now, in the meantime it is available on fedora.

This is affecting an app I maintain as I can't use it with cairo-gl for

Bug description:
the new nvidia-current is causing a 300% increase in memory use at login as
compared to previously and or as currently with nouveau 3d drivers.
While not a big deal on machines with 2+GB ram on older machines with 1 GB it
does represent a bit of an issue.
The increases are pretty much seen with all process, ie. 'across the board'
Attached are single report logs, each from fresh boot

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2014-10-30 Thread Stu Zhao
Affects me too.

Google Chrome, Image Viewer, GVim, Gnome Terminal are all very slow.
Switching workspace to the above applications are very slow as well.

However, playing Team Fortress 2 on Steam works perfectly.

I am using System76 15.6" Gazelle Professional laptop with Intel High
Definition Graphics 4600. Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 upgraded from 14.04

Title:
  Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using Gnome Ubuntu 14.10, Dell XPS 13, intel 915 Graphics

After upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10 there are a lot of places where
the graphics are working much slower than they were before:

  - Gnome Shell Interface is very sluggish, visible "chops" (redrawing)
  when pressing the [Super] key.

  - Selecting text in Gedit takes a full second pr. line

Experiences some subjective improvement when I booted kernel 3.13.0-37
instead of 3.16.0-23, but that may be my imagination as the problem
  persists.

I've searched google, forums, found a couple of relevant links that
point to the issue being the Intel drivers.

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/53962...E2%86%92-14-10
  http://www.webupd8.org/2014/10/ubunt...ent-1652086424

But the drivers currently in 14.10 should be newer than those supplied
by Intel to 14.04 so that doesn't make sense to me. As one Intel
  developer wrote:

"I would like to point out that since what we do is bring more ecent
versions of the software to the target distributions than they ship
with, a 14.04 targeted installer is unlikely to bring much to a 14.10
installation, which most likely has the same or more recent versions
  already anyway."

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1235516] Re: service networking restart causes Xorg crash

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072518

This bug is definitely happens on ubuntu inside virtualbox, with gnome
installed.I've generally don't restart networking now since it kills
the GUI.

Interestingly this time, it seemed to leave one of my programmes running
in the GUI, but it killed gnome shell + everything else.

Title:
service networking restart causes Xorg crash

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
NetworkManager stopped being able to connect to Wi-Fi access points,
so I attempted to restart it. There was no /etc/init.d/network-manager
script (presumably removed during the upgrade to Saucy), so I ran:

  service networking restart

This caused all GUI programs to be killed (several left crash logs,
which I did not submit to Launchpad for obvious reasons), leaving me
with just a wallpaper and a mouse pointer, still moveable. Attempting
to switch to a VT displayed first a black screen with the classic X
pointer, then finally a VT, but the system became unresponsive to any
key. Pressing the power button caused the system to shut down.

I was also affected by this bug after upgrading from Saucy. I have the
Gnome PPA installed, and the PPA packages for saucy have higher version
number than the trusty packages.

I think this will be solved when the Gnome PPA for Trusty is fully
released.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1088146] Re: Asus n56vz battery state is wrong or battery not charging at all.

2014-04-15 Thread Stu
I have the same problem N56VZ, latest BIOS, I used to have an N56VM for
a while, AFAICT they are exactly the same and have the same bug.

Is it worth poking ASUS now this thread is quite big ?

As I write this I've unhibernated the laptop and the fan sounds a bit like when
the plane is on the run way and about to take off.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1088146] Re: Asus n56vz battery state is wrong or battery not charging at all.

2014-03-26 Thread Stu
Well it's 2014 and n56VZ has similar problems -

Up to date BIOS, Ubuntu 13.10 - hibernate and wake up - fans go mental.

The fix - turn off, unplug and take out battery.

Title:
Asus n56vz battery state is wrong or battery not charging at all.

Status in “upower” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an ASUS N56VZ notebook. There are some bugs I have mentioned and they
are known on ubuntu forums.
Sometimes I am getting strange results in battery power state, that are not
even close to be accurate.
  So bugs are:
  1) Then I am turning on the notebok with not enough power (3% for example)
the fan is going to it`s full speed (no CPU loading at all) and the power
indicator shows that power is insufficient. Plugging the power adapter didn`t
solved the problem - it was not charging and notebook soon turns off.
  2) As I described above, I can`t feed the notebook sometimes (especially on
low battery level).
  3) I am getting the strange battery state result: sometimes it looks, that
it`s charging very slow. Am am working about a hour and my power level just
rised from 30 minutes to 40 minutes.
  4) I am not sure about this bug, may be it`s a hardware one, but then I
turned notebook off with plugged in power adapter, it was not charged at all
for the whole night!
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2084696 - here is a proof, that I am
not alone )))

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 554005] Re: Using some glib functions within multiprocessing from a threaded app sometimes causes 100% CPU utilization

2012-04-30 Thread Stu
Confirming this - it only started affecting me since upgrading to 12.04.

When I login lightdm seems to freeze for ages, switching to another
terminal and running top I can see gwibber-service taking most of the
CPU, killing it gets me to a desktop.

(tested with login to gnome shell desktop).

  1. set up Gwibber accounts with passwords stored in the keyring
  2. restart your computer
  3. wait for gwibber to autostart

Eventually gwibber-service will hit 100% CPU utilization.
desktopcouch-service also sometimes suffers from this.
