[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1617675] [NEW] Evolution will not connect to Gmail

2016-08-27 Thread Thomas Sisson
Public bug reported:

You're going to say this is not a bug. You may call it a feature request
or any of many other not-a-bug issues. However, Evolution is locked into
Gnome and many of the features and abilities of Gnome. I can use
Thunderbird with no problem, but I can only use Evolution calendar in
Gnome. (Is Gnome trying to be Microsoft?)

Anyway, we all know the issue. Evolution is buggy at best. Evolution
will not connect to Gmail or Google Apps. It won't let me access my
Google Calendar if I cannot access my email. This could be separated as
well, but it's not at this time. Google uses OAuth, and you have to live
under a rock to know it. I have gone through all the steps to allow an
insecure application to access Gmail, but Evolution spontaneously
decides I'm offline because it does not receive the proper response from
Google Mail servers.

Please fix it, or at least untie Evolution from Gnome.

By the way, fixing it in a later version is not a fix. If you are using
an unfixed version and the fixed version is not available for the
version of Ubuntu one is using, it's not fixed.

Getting off my soapbox.

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 133133]

2014-01-06 Thread Thomas Sisson
Since I am not a programmer, I cannot submit a patch. However, can't
someone simply replace whatever is opening Nautilus with xdg-open? You
don't even have to know how it works or where the files are.

Just to be clear though, anything involving xdg uses XDG standards. If
one is curious, or simply wants or needs to know the standard, check out
multiple publications at freedesktop.org.

I understand that Mozilla has abandoned Qt, but that does not mean that
Linux distributions of Mozilla software should be Gnome specific. The
point of the XDG standard is that anything following it should work for
any desktop environment that follows it. Both Gnome and KDE follow those
standards.

was not using gedit. I think the bug is in gsettings-data-convert
regardless of the application running.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 697412] Re: Emacs won't start, complaining about font ending in a number

2013-07-20 Thread Thomas Sisson
Font handling for Emacs is still not fixed. This specific font may have
been resolved, but there are many fonts out there that Emacs simply
doesn't recognize. Is the bug present in Emacs 24? If not, why is the
default version still 23? Is this just the fact that font management has
changed so much in Linux since Emacs was first written. For example,
fonts.config in the home directory is now deprecated even though we have
personal and system fonts.

Title:
Emacs won't start, complaining about font ending in a number

Status in GNU Emacs:
  Fix Released
Status in Ubuntu Font Family:
  Invalid
Status in “emacs23” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: emacs23

I've installed the Ubuntu Beta Mono 17 font from
  https://launchpad.net/~canonical-ux/+archive/walled-garden (currently
a private PPA). If you set your default system fixed width font to
this (via Preferences - Appearance - Fonts) and set the font size to
11, then start emacs from the command line, you get the following
early error message on the console and Emacs does not start:

Font `Ubuntu Beta Mono 17 11' is not defined

Now starting emacs with emacs --font monospace will get the first
frame up, but then C-x 5 2 fails with the same error message in the
minibuffer. The font size doesn't matter, since if you use the
default 12 point font, the '11' is replaced by '12' in the error
message above. Note that you can still use the font if you reset your
system font to monospace and then set Ubuntu Beta Mono 17 in your
.emacs or via customize on the default face.

After confirmation by colleagues, we think it's a font parsing bug in
Emacs. Using a system font of 'courier 10 pitch' does not cause the
problem, nor does using a font with a number at the end but with no
space between it and the preceding word. It appears as though ending
the font name in [space][number] causes the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1161105] Re: freeglut3-dev has unmet dependencies in raring

2013-07-18 Thread Thomas Sisson
Is this related to mesa and not being able to get the Gnome 3D desktop
to load in 13.04 Raring?

I ask because one recommendation was to install freeglut3-dev. When I
try to install I get the same message:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
freeglut3-dev : Depends: libgl1-mesa-dev but it is not going to be installed or
  libgl-dev
Depends: libglu1-mesa-dev but it is not going to be installed
or
  libglu-dev
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

If I run apt-get install -f, my output is this:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

If I run dpkg --configure -a, I get nothing!

I had to force an upgrade to Raring. My previous upgrade to Quantal
failed, and I had to complete it as root in the terminal. I believe the
system stored that as a server upgrade, so that a desktop upgrade
would no longer work.

Maybe there is a bug in do-release-upgrade or the upgrade process or I
just created too many issues. I consider it to be a bug if a system
upgrade doesn't work.

If I do an upgrade with a full reinstall, I may not bother with Gnome as
an alternative desktop. My primary session, KDE and the desktop effects
work without mesa on plasma desktop. I'll update if someone asks, and
there is something to report.

2013-07-14 Thread Thomas Sisson
It is marked as fixed here and at Gnome Bugzilla; however, the fix is in
Gedit 3.7. I can't get that version from software updates. Seriously
Ubuntu! If there is a fix, send it to all supported distributions. I
don't care what your release cycle is.

If it is fixed, then activate the update in all supported distributions!
Don't make us wait for an release upgrade!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 49568] Re: Thunderbird KDE-integration

2013-05-04 Thread Thomas Sisson
Please bring back kde-firefox-support. This fixes KDE integration for
Firefox and Thunderbird. Without this, it leaves Nautilus as a running
process which in itself creates another bug. Nautilus is such an
aggressive application that it will try to take over the desktop.

Why are Kubuntu users treated as red-headed stepchildren? (No offense to
red-heads or stepchildren; it's an expression.)

  Thunderbird KDE-integration

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
By default, Thunderbird doesn't use KDE-dialogs when running under
Kubuntu, which can be changed by editing /usr/lib/mozilla-
thunderbird/components/nsFilePicker.js like described for Firefox in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=110353 . This is quite some
pain, since it has to be done every time Thunderbird gets updated.

The preferable solution would be to supply a Thunderbird-KDE-
integration-package, or at least putting nsFilePicker.js under
  /etc/[mozilla-]thunderbird/, so that user-made changes won't get
  wasted after each update.

Btw, in Thunderbird 1.0.x one could dpkg-reconfigure mozilla-
thunderbird to manually update the Thunderbird Chrome Registry to
enable changes made in nsFilePicker.js, which unfortunately doesn't
work for Thunderbird 1.5.x anymore :-(

Title:
Network-Manager Repeatedly Asks for Authorization (WPA2 Password)

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  System:

  – Fresh clean installation of xubuntu 12.10 using the xubuntu .iso from the
official xubuntu web site, fully updated using the xubuntu Software Updater.
  – network-manager fully set up for an internet connection using WiFi with
WPA2-Personal, including SSID and WPA2 password. Boxes automatically connect
and available to all users ticked. In Settings Start-Up Applications, the
network-manager box is ticked.
  – The internet connection through this access point is routinely used by
other PCs (including ubuntu 11.04 and xubuntu 11.10, all using the same
settings for network-manager) without any connectivity or stability problems.
Access point signal strength is over 80%.

  Bug:

  – On system start-up, network-manager attempts to connect.
  – After a significant delay, a panel pops up requesting authorization. The
WPA2 password is already filled in in this panel and it is correct.
  – Press the authorization panel's connect button. The panel disappears. The
network indicator icon rotates.
  – After a significant delay, the authorization panel pops up again.
  – Press the authorization panel's connect button again.
  – This cycle may repeat itself several more times, until network-manager
finally makes a successful connection.

  What should happen:
  ---
On start-up, network-manager should establish the internet connection without
any user interaction and without delay.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1084364] Re: Network-Manager Repeatedly Asks for Authorization (WPA2 Password)

2013-04-29 Thread Thomas Sisson
This is a well-known bug. If you search for it on the Internet, it shows
up everywhere.

The actual behavior varies according to what desktop one has installed.
For instance, KDE uses Kwallet instead of gnome-keyring. The KDE daemon
wipes the password field so that it must be reentered, but the behavior
is otherwise identical.

I believe that network-manager back-ends make incorrect system calls
when it cannot immediately connect with the current password. It does
not know whether the password is missing or incorrect, if the connection
is unavailable, if the connection was stopped due to a suspend, lock, or
shutdown, or if the connection was temporarily lost.

Frequently suggested work-arounds include deleting the connection,
rebooting the computer, or deleting the connection and rebooting the
computer. These are stopgap measures and hacks at best.

It is also suggested that this is a driver issue, but for many the
system is using the best or only network driver available. The obvious
alternative is Wicd, but it has yet been updated to the long awaited
version 2.0. The current version is simply not capable of making all
types of modern wireless connections.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1074260]

2013-04-04 Thread Thomas Sisson
I'm still having this problem, but I am stuck on Thunderbird 17.04 on
Ubuntu Linux. Even though there are newer versions available for
Windows. I previously had set the Default Character Encoding to UTF-8
the Character Encoding had been set to Western (IS0-8859-1). If this is
being reset by an upgrade, it is possible that other things are being
changed that affect this issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 296585] Re: Archive Mounter action should open mounted folder

2012-11-14 Thread Thomas-sisson-1
I consider this broken, not a bug. Is anyone still working on this
project; this is still not fixed four years later. Has anyone done
anything with this? Seriously, Microsoft has been able to have this
built in since Windows XP.

Additionally, Linux now has a way of defining universal default
programs. Why do programs still complain that they can't find one or
another program that isn't installed by default because hasn't been to
touched in years?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 119899]

2012-07-31 Thread Thomas-sisson-1
This behavior is still present in the most current versions (note
message date) of Thunderbird on Ubuntu and SeaMonkey on Windows 7. It
does appear to be an issue when applying after the fact to IMAP and POP
mail. Someone commented about a search function for AOL. Every webmail
account I have, including AOL, has a search function. Many of these
*custom* headers are standard headers. The best workaround, in my
opinion, is to simply add common headers to future builds. This can also
be an issue because occasionally the mail filters cannot find the folder
the message is to be moved (another bug?). In my mind, X should imply
custom headers since that is the recommended standard. All other common
headers should be considered standard.

A suggest list, including those already listed, should contain
Authentication-Results, BCC, CC, Content-Type, Content-Transfer-
Encoding, Date, Delivered-To, DKIM-Signature, DomainKey-Signature, From,
List-Id, List-Subscribe, List-Unsubscribe, Mailing-List, Message-ID,
MIME-Version, Precedence, Received, References, Reply-To, Return-Path,
Sender, Subject, To.

I'm sure this is not a comprehensive list. Also, some of these may be
meaningless and some starting with X might be added. However, the person
working on this bug will make the final decision when editing the code.
Please offer further suggestions so that we may come to an agreement. I
don't think this work around will add bulk or slow down mail.
