Bug description:
I have a Lenovo P50 with Nvidia Optimus (Quadro M1000M), installed with
Ubuntu 16.04 and the recommended Nvidia drivers (361.42).
I added two external monitors connected to DP sockets in the docking station.
I would like to have display shift to those two monitors when the laptop is
docked. One monitor has native resolution of 1680x1050 and the other is
1920x1080. The laptop native resolution is 1920x1080.

  Expected result:
laptop monitor shut off, two external monitors running in native resolution,
display shared on both monitors (not mirrored).

  Process:
I configured the display using the "Displays" applet in the unity control
center. However, pressing "Apply" when changing a specific display setting
(such as resolution, location of screen relative to others, turning on/off),
results in a long period of darkness, usually followed by display falling back
to mirroring of all 3 monitors, using a similar-size screen (either low on all
or high on all with the low-res monitor using panning). The applet remains
frozen for some time, with the dialog "Is the display ok" open but
unresponsive. Later I realized this is because there is another dialog of
"Cannot set screen CRTCXXX" hidden under the two above windows, which needs to
by ok-ed first.

  Extra:
I also tried setting the display manually with 'xrandr', which lead to a
similar result as above - with the "cannot set screen" dialog, and falling back
to mirroring. This convinced me that the problem is probably with the nvidia
driver and not the higher plumbing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1615734] Re: Multiple monitors broken

2019-08-22 Thread TomasHnyk
Hm, I am on 18.04 on Thinkpad 530 and Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with three
monitors and I have a very mild version of this problem. Only after
suspend, the two monitors that are connected via the dock flicker
(either show screen corruption or repeatedly blank in and blank out).
The one connected to laptop's miniDP port works fine.

However, I only need to issue xset dpms force standby to make them turn
off and then move a mouse to make them turn on again. Another
alternative is pressing alt+ctrl+F6 to go to tty6 and then alt+ctrl+F7
to go back to graphical interface. Still inconvenient though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 903997] Re: Held jobs should release automatically if selected printer is connected after attempting to print from an application

2018-10-02 Thread TomasHnyk
Hello,
well, it is fixed and it is not fixed. When I plug in the printer (or turn it
on when it is connected via wifi), it gets printed after five minutes (I
think). So it seems the printer queue checkes every five minutes if a printer
is available and then prints held jobs. I do not see why it is not immediate.

Title:
Held jobs should release automatically if selected printer is
connected after attempting to print from an application

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  How to reproduce:
  1. Unplug your printer.
  2. Try to print a page on this printer.
  3. Plug in said printer.

  What one expects:
  1. The printer starts printing.

  What happens:
  1. Well, nothing. The job in question is "held" and must be released (via a
toolbar).

  What is the use case:
Using a laptop with a printer. Often, that means the printer is connected
only if the user wants to print something. Often, the user remembers to connect
the printer only after sending something to print. (well, what actually happens
to me is that I turn on the printer but forget to connect the cable - about 70%
of cases. I know I am stupid but the computer should be smarter, right?)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 653483] Re: Renaming a file with a already existing filename in current folder fails

2018-06-08 Thread TomasHnyk
Well, I still think the current implementation is not good (it still
forces the user to rename the original file manually), but I moved to
Nemo after upgrading to 18.04, I do not like the direction of Nautilus
development.

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop
Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu.

Title:
Renaming a file with a already existing filename in current folder
  fails

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

  Steps to reproduce:
  (1) Create a filename called AAA.
  (2) Create a filename called BBB.
  (3) Try to rename (either wia context menu or via F2) BBB to AAA.
What happens: A warning (see screenshot) appears: The item could not be
renamed. The name "AAA" is already used in this folder. Please use a different
name. OK.
It is possible to only click OK and try to rename the name in a different way.
What I would expect to happen: a dialog with something like:
This filename is already used (title)
This item could not be renamed because the name "AAA" is already used in this
folder. (description text)
Cancel | Rename anyway and delete* the original item | Rename the original
item (buttons)

  *move to trash

So basically do not provide a bothersome warning that forces the user
to do everything manually and provide her with options as to what she
actually wants to do. I have not thought out the wording well enough,
but I hope it is enough to get the idea.

2015-09-18 Thread TomasHnyk
Is this still reproducible? I cannot reproduce it on 15.10.

Title:
Keyboard shortcuts does not work when last window is closed because
Desktop does not get focus automatically.

Status in Compiz:
  New
Status in compiz package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When I close the last active window the desktop does not get focus
automatically, this prevent the keyboard shortcuts to work because apparently
the last window I close or minimize is still in focus according to the title
bar, which still says the title of the window that has been closed/minimized.
For a proper example if I have google-chrome open and I am working with
terminal the title bar says "Terminal", when I close or minimize the terminal
window it is supposed to automatically focus the next window on desktop stack
that is google-chrome but this is not the case, title bar still remains the
same "Terminal" until I manually click on the google-chrome window.
Same happens when there is no more window left on the desktop, and after
closing the last window it does not capture the keys. Any keyboard shortcuts
does not works at all except "Super", "Super+other_keys" and "Alt" (for HUD).
I cannot use "Ctrl+alt+T", "Alt+f2", F12 (for Guake terminal) or any other key
combination, for getting the desktop back to the focus either I have to press
"Super" or "Alt" key or bring up the dash from launcher and then close.
So far the problem appears to be the "Window Focusing" which is not carried
out properly but I am not sure !

(I am not an insider, but what if one needed to issue a security patch
for subtitleeditor once 15.10 is released? The package would fail to
rebuild, which does not seem acceptable.)

The diff between both versions of glibmm2.4 show some changes with

There was an old bug that I just made a duplicate of this one (for those
wondering that noone bothered to fill a bug before).

Thanks for fixing this. However, this only escalates bug 1453757 (even
though I am not sure if that is not a regression - I think id did not
use to happen on 14.04).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1453757] [NEW] Using grid loses focus when focus follows mouse is enabled

2015-05-11 Thread TomasHnyk
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1. Disable click to focus in ccsm
2. open any window, let's say nautilus and move it to the left half of the
screen (so that your mouse cursor is there)
3. Use ctr+super+right to move that window to the right and semi-maximize it

What happens:
1. That window loses focus

What should happen:
1. The window should stay focus until cursor is moved.

I think this used not to happen on 14.04 (I am on 15.04, reproduced with
guest account).

Bug description:
With click-to-focus disabled (follow focus), compiz does not allow
focusing on the desktop with any non-minimized windows present. If
click-to-focus is enabled, then compiz behaves as expected.

  Steps to reproduce:

  - disable click-to-focus in compiz
  - open at least one application
  - try to rename a file on the desktop

At this point the desktop will not receive focus, and typing will go
into the last focused window, not the desktop (for file rename).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1416005] Re: totem fails to play video if gstreamer-vaapi is installed

2015-05-04 Thread TomasHnyk
I am working a lot with videos using a gstreamer based subtitle editor
called subtitleeditor (compiled from upstream, ubuntu's version is
horribly outdated) and it can play the videos, but with terrible
performace (lots of stuttering, sometimes it skips 30 frames or even
more before continuing to play). Removing gstreamer-vaapi solves it too.

i.e. I am not sure this bug is specific to clutter, subtitleeditor does
not use it (it might be badly programmed, but as far as I know this does
not happen on Fedora).

help? This report serves for anybody with the same problem so that they
do not have to open a new report. What would duplicates be about? Is
there a rule saying only original reporter can respond to bugs?

2014-10-01 Thread TomasHnyk
Christopher: what don't you understand about this bug not being hardware
specific? This is a wishlist item, because the code needed to solve this
(automatic rotation of touchpad when laptop is rotated in the physical
world) is just not present in xorg? Nobody in Ubuntu is going to solve
this, this is an upstream bug and upstream is not keen to implement this
as far as I know so I guess it will go unfixed until xorg is obsolete,
but why don't we just set it to confirmed, set importance to wishlist
and let it be?

How to fix it once it happen:
type something and either hit escape or delete what you have typed.

in gsettings, I have these lenses disabled:

wrong moment. Anyway, it should be fixed now.

As for notify.so, it is provided by pidgin_2.10.9-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb:
$ apt-file search /usr/lib/pidgin/notify.so
pidgin: /usr/lib/pidgin/notify.so
pidgin-dbg: /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/pidgin/notify.so

Also, it was there originally, I did not touch that line. True, it was
meant to be turned on by default but it was not (that is what the line
pref name='loaded' type='pathlist' does). It provides notifications
about new messages, I think, quite a sensible thing to have turned on by
default.

** Patch added: Include changelog

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1360600] [NEW] Desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications are not picked up when updated

2014-08-23 Thread TomasHnyk
Public bug reported:

If you modify a desktop file in /usr/share/applications (say change
leafpad's name to leafpad - changed), it gets picked up immediately
after saving the file when using the dash (by typing leaf, leafpad -
changed would pop up.

For files in ~/.local/share/applications, this does not hold. Editing
them is not picked up by the dash and presumably the bamf. One needs to
usually change the name of the desktop file for it to be noticed. And
that does not work 100 % either.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1302885] Re: Media keyboard shortcuts not working

An workaround might be using xev (in terminal), pressing the button you
want to use and noting its name,

KeyRelease event, serial 37, synthetic NO, window 0x601,
root 0x9b, subw 0x0, time 37940588, (800,388), root:(859,440),
state 0x10, keycode 123 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume),
same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

Its XF86AudioRaiseVolume in the output above. Then run dconf-editor
and try to put this in appropriate place (they are described here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/26056/where-are-gnome-keyboard-shortcuts-
stored ).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1359436] [NEW] Remapping PrintScreen key to Menu makes it impossible to use the renamed key to take screenshots

2014-08-20 Thread TomasHnyk
Public bug reported:

I do not have a menu key on my keyboard, instead I have prinsceen where Menu
key normally is. So I remmaped it via xmodmap with the line:
keycode 107 = Menu NoSymbol Menu
I run xmodmap on a file with this line on every login. In xev, PrtScr correctly
reports as Menu. When I try to reassign the Prinscreen command in
settingskeyboardshortcuts, to ctrlMenu, it seems to work and it works
right away, but after I log out and log in, it no longer works even though the
ctrlMenu still shows in settingskeyboardshortcuts.

This is on 14.04, gnome-control-centre works flawlessly in this regard
(I tried it under gnome-shell).

Short steps to reproduce:
1. Find out which keykode printcreen on your keyboard is using xev (I assume
here it is 107)
2. xmodmap -e keycode 107 = Menu NoSymbol Menu
3.gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys screenshot
SuperMenu
4. Verify it works by pressing Super+Menu=PrtScr
5. Log out an in.
6. It no longer works.

  =
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed

However, the templates are missing from the File menu - only an empty

create a file from template in the list view.

The same issue is present with Nautilus scripts: they are present in

Title:
  touchpad rotation when monitor rotated

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
when the monitor is rotated to a portrait orientation using gnome-
display-properties (changing the rotation dropdown), and then i
physically rotate my laptop, any connected usb mice then move
correctly across the portrait screen- there are no issues with
rotation for external mice. however, ubuntu (maverick at least) does
not account for the fact that if you physically rotate your monitor,
then you're obviously going to need to physically rotate a laptop's
touchpad as well and thus the internal touchpad does not properly work
when the laptop's monitor is in a portrait mode- up on the rotated
  touchpad = left, etc

not sure of what package the bug is in - probably x.org

Title:
  touchpad rotation when monitor rotated

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
when the monitor is rotated to a portrait orientation using gnome-
display-properties (changing the rotation dropdown), and then i
physically rotate my laptop, any connected usb mice then move
correctly across the portrait screen- there are no issues with
rotation for external mice. however, ubuntu (maverick at least) does
not account for the fact that if you physically rotate your monitor,
then you're obviously going to need to physically rotate a laptop's
touchpad as well and thus the internal touchpad does not properly work
when the laptop's monitor is in a portrait mode- up on the rotated
  touchpad = left, etc

not sure of what package the bug is in - probably x.org

Bug description:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 800064] Re: touchpad rotation when monitor rotated

2014-07-31 Thread TomasHnyk
Have you read the original report and subsequent comments? This is a
feature request, the specifications of anyone's machine are irelevant,
this does not work for anybody with synaptics (or any other if I am not
mistaken) touchpad. My problem and the original reporter's program are
exactly the same. Please, use some common sense.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 800064] Re: touchpad rotation when monitor rotated

2014-07-31 Thread TomasHnyk
(In other words - set it to wishlist and confirmed and let it be. Unless
somebody from xorg is going to develop this feature, this is not going
ot happen. There exists a patch (see here:
http://cc.oulu.fi/~rantalai/synaptics/ ) that enables manual (but
scriptable) way to rotate touchpad's axis, but upstream developers want
something more general that would automatically work for all touchpads,
not just synaptics. But this would need more work thay do not seem to be
interested in doing it.)

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

For dealing with an earlier bug I added a gnome terminal to my startup
applications--Unity was not loading properly and this allowed me to do
a clean shutdown. Now Unity is working properly, but I still have the
Gnome Terminal in my startup applications (select system settings and
it is Startup Applications under the Personal category.

When I log in, the terminal starts as expected, but it has its own
menu bar (i.e. not integrated with the unity panel) and it is placed
flush with the top of the screen (i.e. with the window's title bar
behind the top panel). Everything is fully functional, and I can use
the ALT-click-drag combo to move it out of the way. If I close the
terminal and start a new one, the menu is integrated into the unity
panel and it opens in the right place (just below, not behind, the top
  panel).

Again, everything is fully functional, it just appears that the app
from the startup applications is not properly integrated into unity.
I assume all this info was transmitted, but I am on Natty 11.04 beta,
and all packages are up to date as of the time of this filing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1170647] Re: Clicking on Nautilus’ launcher icon opens new window instead of restoring the minimized one when browsing external drives/locations

Bug description:
Sometimes left clicking the nautilus launcher icon doesn't bring up a
minimized nautilus window. Instead of restoring the window a new
instance of nautilus is showing up.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a nautilus window by clicking on the launcher icon.
  2. Navigate to a symlinked directory whose target is located on a different
harddrive (for example: a symlink to a folder on a sd-card).
  3. Minimize the nautilus window.
  4. Try to bring up that window again by clicking the launcher icon.

  What happens:

  1. A new instance (window) of nautilus is opened.
  2. There's no obvious way to access the first window again. The only way is
ALT+TAB.

  What schould happen:

If a nautilus window is already open and minimized clicking the
launcher icon should bring up that window. This was the behavior of
nautilus windows in Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal).

When burning a project to an image file on disk, there is no way to change
default destination path. It is always set to $HOME/brasero.iso for data
project, $HOME/brasero.cue for audio project etc.

There simply may be no room under user home directory or the user may prefer
to
change the default destination path for one reason or another. It is pretty
standard for an application to allow the user to choose destination for the
  resulting output.

The same applies to the working temporary directory which defaults to /tmp. I
do not have enough room in /tmp which is mounted as tmpfs on my system, and
have no good reason to grow its size. While default temporary dir can be
easily
changed using gconf-editor, this is not user friendly. Some sort of
preferences

Title:
  touchpad rotation when monitor rotated

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
when the monitor is rotated to a portrait orientation using gnome-
display-properties (changing the rotation dropdown), and then i
physically rotate my laptop, any connected usb mice then move
correctly across the portrait screen- there are no issues with
rotation for external mice. however, ubuntu (maverick at least) does
not account for the fact that if you physically rotate your monitor,
then you're obviously going to need to physically rotate a laptop's
touchpad as well and thus the internal touchpad does not properly work
when the laptop's monitor is in a portrait mode- up on the rotated
  touchpad = left, etc

not sure of what package the bug is in - probably x.org

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1206760] Re: Zenity text windows too tall with long text

Zenity windows get TOO HIGH when text contains many words

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1206760

Title:
Zenity text windows too tall with long text

Status in “zenity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
It seems that with many versions of zenity 3.60 and below, 3 of the
text type dialogs ( --info --warning --error ) have significant sizing
issues with text wrapping enabled. Long strings of text seem to cause
  extreemly tall dialogs

  such as this first example
zenity --info --text Hello there friends. Hello there friends. Hello there
friends. Hello there friends. d d d d d d d d d d d dd asdfsadf sdf sad fas
dfas dfas df a adsfasfas

one workaround might be to turn off wrapping
zenity --info --text Hello there friends. Hello there friends. Hello there
friends. Hello there friends. d d d d d d d d d d d dd asdfsadf sdf sad fas
dfas dfas df a adsfasfas --no-wrap
but this can cause dialogs to be too large vertically

I noticed that by forcing the minimal width as so, (I pass 1, but it seems
that zenity uses a hardcoded minimum)
zenity --info --text Hello there friends. Hello there friends. Hello there
friends. Hello there friends. d d d d d d d d d d d dd asdfsadf sdf sad fas
dfas dfas df a adsfasfas --width=1
the height of the dialog seems to be the same as the first example. However,
with the skinny dialog, the full dialog is used, and the text is wrapped much
better.

Therefore, my guess is that when text wrapping is enabled (which it is
by default) for --info --warning and --error Zenity is wrapping the
text with the hardcoded minimal width, and calculating the needed
height for wrapping the text with the minimal width. However, zenity
usually later on uses a different much wider width when the dialog is
displayed, which therefore causes the text wrapping to use less
  height.

However zenity still ends up setting the height of the window to what
it would need to be to fit the text if the window was the minimal
width, in cases causing excessivly large and tall zenity windows.

This is just my guess from what I can see.

dialogs with --question seem to be sized a bit more sanely.

  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will

2013-11-25 Thread TomasHnyk
This is similar from the dash (rhythmbox open - dash plays a file,
otherwise it just opens rhythmbox). It seems rhythmbox-client is called
and it spawns rhythmbox but it does not wait enough to pass the file to
be played to the freshly started Rhythmbox. See bug 1201016 for details.
