[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2048696] [NEW] Desktop occasionally starts in overview if hotcorner enabled

2024-01-08 Thread Umayr Saghir
Public bug reported:

With the hot corner enabled via the gnome settings multitasking menu,
occasionally the desktop on login will start in the overview rather than
directly on the desktop. There will be times when after login I end up
on the desktop so I cant reproduce the bug consistently but it happens
regularly enough going through the login process. Double checked dconf
and the dock has the "disable-overview-on-startup" property set to true
(default).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037461] Re: Broken scaling on app labels in app grid on multi monitor setups with varying scale factors

2023-10-02 Thread Umayr Saghir
The pixelation occurs the moment I bring up the screenshot interface.
Toggling to screen recording doesn't show the same pixelation, only
normal screenshots are affected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037461] Re: Broken scaling on app labels in app grid on multi monitor setups with varying scale factors

2023-09-29 Thread Umayr Saghir
Seeing the same thing with text in notifications when the higher scaled
monitor is above the top panel.

Don't know if it's related the cause of this multimonitor weirdness but
the screenshot attached was taken on the 1920x1080 monitor but somehow
has an image size of 2884 × 1622, even the secondary monitor is only
2560x1600. I can create a separate bug for this?

Opening the keyboard layout for an input source on Wayland opens the
windows in XWayland. On a high resolution display with fractional
scaling enabled, the window's content is blurry making it hard to
discern certain characters in the layout.

Expected: Keyboard layout to open in a native Wayland window, with
  characters crisp and legible

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037143] [NEW] Autohide enabled Dock scaling breaks on multi monitor with different scale factors (low to high scale)

2023-09-22 Thread Umayr Saghir
Public bug reported:

The dock with autohide enabled breaks scaling on multi monitor setups
when revealed from a hidden state if it is on the edge of the monitor
adjacent to the other monitor where the next monitor has a higher scale
factor. In my case the dock is on the monitor with 100% scale factor and
the monitor adjacent has 150% scaling.

When the bug occurs a bunch of the following messages appear in the log:
gnome-shell[4226]: Can't update stage views actor
[:0x562389bfc9e0] is on because it needs an allocation.

I suspect this could be linked to my findings in this bug:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2034722] Re: High CPU usage causing slowdown

2023-09-08 Thread Umayr Saghir
Yep I somehow had that set in my /etc/environment (don't ever remember
setting it though). I removed it and rebooted and performance has gotten
slightly better but now the logs are being spammed with "Meta.Rectangle
is deprecated, use Mtk.Rectangle instead" from the bug you linked.
Gnome-shell's CPU usage doesn't get as high as previously, it now ends
up getting to around 50±% but is accompanied by a spike in systemd-
journald so I guess that points to the log spam causing the slowdown on
my machine. The spikes mainly occur when going into the overview and
switching workspaces.

I expect lower end/older systems would feel this the most, with newer
systems not noticing any significant slowdown on the desktop.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2034722] [NEW] High CPU usage causing slowdown

2023-09-07 Thread Umayr Saghir
Public bug reported:

I have been experiencing high CPU usage from gnome-shell since upgrading
to Mantic. htop shows gnome-shell consuming around 120% of the CPU. This
ends up resulting a very sluggish feeling desktop.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969220]

2022-06-04 Thread Umayr Saghir
(In reply to Olivier Tilloy from comment #4)

The snap was previously failing to recognise the gesture with the
Wayland backend on the beta channel a few weeks back (switched to beta
roughly around the time stable was made to default to XWayland).

Running `MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox` when using the stable channel
version now recognises the gesture.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1972728] [NEW] Night light not working on Nvidia Wayland

2022-05-09 Thread Umayr Saghir
Public bug reported:

On the Wayland session using an Nvidia GPU, enabling the Night Light
setting in the Settings app doesn't change the screen colour temperature
to a warmer hue regardless of "Sunset to Sunrise" or "Manual Schedule"
being selected. Switching to the X11 session results in Night Light
working as expecting.

I'm currently using the Nvidia 510.60.02 driver (RTX 2080Ti).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1968425] Re: Workspace switching interruptible with trackpad overview gesture

2022-04-20 Thread Umayr Saghir
I think it's similar to a degree, the other bug starts in the overview
and similarly attempting to interrupt the transition, I can confirm the
behaviour of seeing "a part of the previous workspace for a second or
two" on GNOME 42. My issue is slightly different as it starts from the
desktop and interrupts the transition by going to the overview (as
demonstrated in the screen recording).

I think both bugs speak to additional polish needed for the workspace
transitions namely preventing an in progress transition from being
interrupted regardless of being on the desktop or the overview. Fixing
this may help to improve some of the unintended transitions I see when
using rapid trackpad gestures, and the transitions sometimes feeling
like they go somewhere different than intended (3 swipe down to desktop
sometimes lands me on an adjacent desktop, but don't know how to
reliably reproduce hence haven't created a bug for this).

What happened: On the desktop when using a trackpad 3 finger swipe to
switch to an adjacent workspace, if a 3 finger swipe up gesture to go
to the activities overview is invoked during the transition animation
it will abruptly cancel the transition and go to the overview at the
original workspace. The abrupt cancellation can make the
workspace/overview experience feel a bit jerky.

What I expected: The transition to be non interruptible with the
activities overview gesture only being able to used when the
transition has concluded. This is the behaviour I observe when using
  workspaces on macOS.

screen recording demonstrating this with libinput debug-gui to show
  trackpad gestures is attached

+ switch to an adjacent workspace, if a 3 finger swipe up gesture to go to

Bug description:
I am using an Nvidia graphics card with HDMI output. The sound output

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1888598 ***

I took a look at those bugs and I'm not sure they are exact duplicates,
it's not clear if https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888598 is describing
a disappearance of the option to select the HDMI audio output, which is
what I'm seeing.

I am using an Nvidia graphics card with HDMI output. The sound output
choice for HDMI is missing from either pavucontrol or the GNOME
settings sound settings after waking the computer up from sleep.
Running `pacmd list-cards` does show the HDMI sound output listed. I
can bring the output back as a choice if I run `pulseaudio -k`, but I
will lose the choice to select this output if I put the computer to
sleep, leaving me only with the S/PDIF output from my motherboard.

I didnt see this issue prior to what I suspect was an `apt upgrade`.
