[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1961508] Re: Dock displaying over window after resuming from blank screen

2023-12-21 Thread William Paul Liggett
FYI: My temporary workaround is to just have the Dock to auto-hide (for
Ubuntu 22.04). This way there are no windows that might get stuck
underneath the Dock. This essentially solves the issue in a simple way,
but the only downside is that some folks prefer to see their Dock all
the time.

I have Blank Screen set to happen after 2 minutes of inactivity.

When resuming from a Blank Screen (by moving the mouse or touching the
keyboard), the Dock is displayed over the top of the current program.

To get it back to normal I need to click "Restore Down" on the current
programs window and then "Maximize" so that the Dock no longer
  overlaps it.

(Note: I have Auto-hide dock turned off.)

This only happens sometimes. I can't reproduce the bug it every time.

  3) What you expected to happen
  - Dock should not overlap the current program on resume from screen blank.

  - The Dock overlaps the current program on resume from screen blank.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1961508] Re: Dock displaying over window after resuming from blank screen

2022-10-23 Thread William Paul Liggett
Hi, I just wanted to say that I am also having this problem. I'm on
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with all of the available updates applied. In the
attached screenshot, you'll see my terminal window as being underneath
the Dock, which I didn't have it like that originally. It tends to
happen after unlocking the screen.

I do not have the Dock set to use the Auto-hide mode and I've tried
using the Dock in both panel and non-panel mode. This bug is super
annoying as I need to click the "Restore Down" and then "Maximize" in
the window controls in each affected application window to get them
fixed temporarily.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1561262] Re: Please replace this package with nvidia-364

2016-08-09 Thread William Paul Liggett
Hi,

So, I'm not sure if my comments are completely accurate, however, I
believe I am having problems with version 361.42 of the NVIDIA driver as
well. I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M on a ZaReason Spec X345 laptop.
Three days ago I was on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and went ahead and did a
complete system wipe and installed the latest Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS distro.
I mainly play 3D first-person shooter games, such as Natural Selection 2
(NS2) and Team Fortress Classic (TFC). Ever since moving to Ubuntu
16.04.1 LTS using the NVIDIA 361.42 driver, it is unbearable to play
these games. This is because my movements are unresponsive (lagged) to
almost make it seem like I am gliding on ice at times. Furthermore, and
more obvious of a graphics problem, if I press a key to display an in-
game menu, the menu constantly flashes on-and-off which makes playing
Natural Selection 2 to be quite annoying (as you need to use in-game
menus frequently).

At first I assumed the gliding movements to be a network problem
since I know that Internet lag can cause similar results. But the
gliding movements were present on multiple NS2 servers and even on a
local "listen" server that I started up. I assume the NVIDIA 361.42
driver is to blame as the same issues I described for NS2 also apply to
TFC (unresponsive movements and in-game menu flickering), which is a
much older game and uses a completely different game engine.

I have tried to fix these issues by playing around with many of my
graphics settings, such as using the NVIDIA configuration program and
also within each game too. But, no setting seems to make a difference.
Although, for what it's worth, I have just played a round of OpenArena
(a F/LOSS version of Quake III) and did not have these problems.

With this said, can I just download and install the older NVIDIA
driver for use on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS? I dare not venture into using what
NVIDIA provides directly, as I have done that in the past and have
essentially destroyed my computer by being stuck with blank screens on
multiple distros (e.g., Fedora and Ubuntu). So, I'm looking for
something officially tested by the Ubuntu team. I did a bit of research
and I believe the driver used on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was NVIDIA version
352.63, as according to this link: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty-
updates/nvidia-352

With that said, I know it's not advised to uses packages from older
repositories, but I saw that the 352.63 driver is apparently on the
Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS repository as well at:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/nvidia-352

Though, unless there's a typo on the newer repository, that 352
package mentions the possibly flawed 361.42 in the latter half of the
name. Likewise, the older 346 package mentions the 352.63 driver (the
one I want) in the name here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/nvidia-346. So, I'm not sure which
package to choose on the newer repository nor do I know if it is as
simple as downloading and installing like a standard .deb file. Any
tips? Or should I just wait for an updated NVIDIA driver such as the 367
version as suggested by tegskywalker (above).

Thanks,

  --William

Title:
Please replace this package with nvidia-364

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-361 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The Nvidia 361 drivers are known for performance regressions and
issues with a handful of games. By replacing this package with version
364, the user gets a better performing driver that not only removes
the issues with the 361 series, but also supports the Vulkan API that
will be used in future games.

Since Xenial is an LTS release and about a month away, it may be wise
to do the testing now for 364 so users can have a Vulkan ready driver
in April. Since the LTS releases are supported for 5 years, you don't
want to hold back Vulkan adoption by shipping an older and less
  desirable package.
