[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1581151] Re: Time to drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf?

2017-10-12 Thread Yuan Chao
To me,
1. This is for sure to go. Noto serif has large glyph coverage and better font
(hinting) quality. I think it should go first in the alias.
2. Some old software like adobe flash / youtube (flash must die...) has
hard-coded font name in the program. I recall UMing and UKai do some tweaks to
overcome this. Those settings need to be kept and migrate. Also some old
software have hard time dealing with TTC or OTF/OCF, this needs test. (maybe
it's time to get rid of them all... ;) )
3. I think "prepend" is still needed for fallback when using non-Noto fonts?

Title:
  Time to drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf?

Status in language-selector package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
With the transition to Noto Sans CJK as default font for Chinese, we
have established a fontconfig configuration for rendering Chinese
under an *English* locale via these three files:

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/64-language-selector-prefer.conf

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-arphic-ukai.conf

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-arphic-uming.conf

(I questioned the need for the two latter in bug #1560548, but I think
we'd better consider the need for the 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf
  files first.)

So, if I have understood the feedback from Chinese users correctly,
both Chinese and Japanese are properly rendered under an English
  locale in Ubuntu 16.04.

It's my belief that what's happening if you switch to a Chinese locale
is that one of the 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf files is enabled,
and Japanese is no longer properly rendered while there is no
  improvement in rendering Chinese.

If I'm right, I think we should drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf.
  Did I miss anything?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1581160] Re: Switch to Noto Sans as default font for Japanese and/or Korean?

2017-10-12 Thread Yuan Chao
Hinting options are rather font dependent. The old free fonts for CJK
usually do not have proper hinting embedded so certain specific tweaks
(ex. auto hint) are needed to avoid faint strokes. The draw backs are
the spaces between strokes may be significantly changed for small size
glyphs. It would not be a good idea to just apply the old settings to
Noto fonts I think. To me unless something is really broken due to this,
it's better leave as it is.

I re-do the update again and libreoffice-help-ja 1:3.5.7-0ubuntu12 is
installed correctly. It seems to be either a broken mirror or even a
broken package according to the log.

  Release: 9.10
  Package-version: language-selector-0.4.18

Ubuntu's language-selector fontconfig overide system seems to have
a problem with CJK: particularly with rendering Japanese on a Chinese
desktop and Chinese on a Japanese desktop (I am not talking about
Han Unification ambiguities, but text with lang tags).

  close example:

  1. set a Japanese environment with language-selector
  2. start a new desktop session in Japanese
  3. open firefox
  4. go to http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-cn/ for example

  Results:
  4. Chinese page is rendered mostly with Japanese glyphs
with fallback to Chinese font for missing glyphs

  Expected
  4. Chinese page rendered in Chinese font

  Notes
For comparison you can try in Fedora for example
where rendering will respect the xhtml lang tag of the page.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1581151] Re: Time to drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf?

2016-05-13 Thread Yuan Chao
For Noto Sans font, it's just for the Sans Serif family. Still for Serif
fonts, we still rely on other local font sets. The fallback settings in
those fontconfig files should still be needed.

Japanese uses Chinese characters but with some variates. That's why a
local font is preferred. Noto Sans provides all glyphs for different
locale, which meets the needs. Just currently only Sans Serif is
provided for Noto Sans.

Yes, (only tested with live env) according to fc-match "Regular" is picked up
over "DemiLight" in both zh_TW and zh_CN. TakaoPGothic is the default for ja_JP.

However, for Firefox, this hack in /etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-
selector-zh-??.conf doesn't seem to work. According to the inspection
tool of Firefox, "AR PL UMing CN/TW", "Noto Sans CJK SC/TC Bold" and
"DemiLight" are picked up.

UMing is second to TakaoPGothic so could be a problem in ja_JP on serif?
(UMing does not have enough glyph coverage in JP)

noto-cjk is definitely better what we had before, like fonts- wqy and

Android community had received these complains for years, finally they got

Fedora also set it as default chinese font start from F21.
and of course, i still hope that ubuntu could drop those 69-language-selector
fontconfig files, just like what F13 did.

2016-03-12 Thread Yuan Chao
> BTW, may this be a related bug?
It looks like some (traditional?) Chinese font (kai?) is picked up instead of
the "Takao Pゴシック" Japanese font requested. Due to the lack of the glyphs, it's
further fallbacked to other(?) "ゴシック" Japanese font. Should be due to some
mis-configuration of the font alias. Doesn't look like a related bug to me.

2016-01-16 Thread Yuan Chao
For the prepend list, separated conf. for TC and SC is needed as
different localized glyphs now supported by Noto sans. It would be nice
if suitable "real" mono space EN fonts are prepended.

2015-12-24 Thread Yuan Chao
Comparing with WenQuanYi Micro Hei, Noto Sans is surely a better choice
to me. For low-DPI display, a proper hinting configuration is needed.
(if not using embedded bitmap font) This should not be a show stopper
here?

Subject:Re: GConf/Thunderbird error on Solaris Nevada

Hi Mats,I believe you download the contribute builds of Thunderbird 2, and
run
  it on snv_70.

For some reason, the fix is upstreamed to Thunderbird 3 alpha, but not
  community version of Thunderbird 2.
Fixed in snv_68 means the fix was integrated to Thunderbird bundled
  with snv_68.

...it seems that the fix for this in thunderbird2 might require some manual
intervention as although the problem is well know, the fix was only
incorporated in the newer thunderbird3.

Have just checked the Karmic version at:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/thunderbird
which currently shows that version 2 of thunderbird is planned for Karmic
release.

As thunderbird3 is at Beta 3 right now I can perhaps see why debian and
ubuntu are sticking with Thunderbird2 just now.
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/about/press/archive/2009-07-21-01

However it does seem a shame to ship a new release with this known
  gconf issue unpatched.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 451613] Re: all disks and partitions are automounted in the live session

2012-11-27 Thread Yuan Chao
On 12.10, the live session also mounts all my harddisk partitions. (disk
icons show up on the unity left panel) As the ext4 partitions are still
mounted in a hibernated session, the mounting caused file system error
after resuming and failed to boot. (recover mode fails too) I would
suggest that this kind of behavior in live session should be done in
read only mode if it's really needed. Same for hibernated windows
partitions.
