[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker such as Sony WH-1000XM3 default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2020-01-01 Thread Yura Pakhuchiy
BTW, just applying this patch[1] to bluez package from 18.04 fixes the
a2dp problem for me with Sony WH-CH700N headphones. Patch applies
cleanly to 5.48.

Bug description:
  SRU Request:

  [Impact]
When the connection drops temporarily, using A2DP, a noticeable latency is
introduced, and the audio goes out of sync.

  [Test Case]
  1) Enable the -proposed repository, and install the new pulseaudio

  2) Restart your computer, connect it to a bluetooth device (e.g. a
headset or a speaker), play one or more videos either locally or
online, and see if you can still reproduce the problem.

  [Regression Potential]
Low, as the changes are upstream, and, if anything, it should also fix a
memory leak.

Furthermore, the changes only affect the bluez5-device module, in
pulseaudio, and they make the buffer updating logic more conscious of
how things can change when the connection drops. This is unlikely to
  affect anything else in pulseaudio.

As I upgraded to the Karmic alpha, bluetooth audio (via a2dp) stopped working
properly. It was working fine in Jaunty.

My headphones are detected and configured by pulse, but the audio
skips as if it's spending half of each second paused. Music is
buffered so that after I click stop on rhythmbox (or whatever--it
happens with whatever player I use) the audio continues until it's
  caught up.

syslog is full of the following lines:
  Jul 27 08:55:45 carlin1 pulseaudio[3218]: alsa-source.c: Increasing minimal
latency to 1.00 ms
  Jul 27 08:55:46 carlin1 pulseaudio[3218]: module-bluetooth-device.c: Skipping

  Jul 27 08:55:46 carlin1 pulseaudio[3218]: module-bluetooth-device.c: Skipping

  This is with
  bluez 4.45-0ubuntu4
  pulseaudio1:0.9.15-4ubuntu2 0

  pulseaudio version 1:0.9.16~test2-0ubuntu1~ppa3 from ubuntu-audio-dev
  didn't help.

Title:
  On-screen text disappears after suspend

Status in xserver-xorg-video-intel package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After resuming from a suspend, almost all text on screen is not
visible. This includes menu items, text in all three boxes (list of
folders, list of e-mails, e-mail body) in Thunderbird (with the
curious exception of "ffl" in the File menu), top menu in Chromium
(but not the menu obtained by pressing the hamburger button), and the
menus produced by clicking items in the system tray. Also, the apport
dialog had no text except for a few capital letters.

  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  * initctl restart unity-panel-service restarts the panel, but the text is
still missing
  * suspend and resume does not fix the issue
  * Logging out fixes the issue
  * Other affected applications:
  ** Chromium file select dialog
  ** Terminal (entire window)
  ** ttys 1-6 (Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc.)
  ** Document viewer (menus)
  ** Software Updater
  ** Rhythmbox
** The dialog that appears when you take a screenshot with Ctrl+Alt+PrtSc
  ** ubuntu-bug
  ** Nautilus
** LibreOffice Calc (spreadsheet text contents)
  ** Firefox
  * Unity dash is not affected.
  * Skype is not affected.
  * Mousing over a button in a dialog correctly shows the text.

Bug description:
   10.10 SRU
I'm requesting a backported fix for 10.10's gnome-power-manager based on the
menu leak I found in 11.04. It's a simple one-line change, only affecting
gnome-power-manager (rather than fixing root cause in libappindicator, because
that potentially may adversely affect consumers that worked around it, though
we know of none).

gnome-power-manager is seemingly the worst offender, so it gets
special treatment. Test case right below. Watch memory use for a
bit. It may go up for a few minutes, but then stabilizes.

Debdiff to follow, it's already been uploaded to maverick-proposed.
  ===

TEST CASE: (at the beginning because it's a long post):
  1. Monitor the output of the command for a few hours
    $ watch -n1 'grep heap -A11 /proc/$( pidof gnome-power-manager )/smaps'

  VERIFICATION SUCCEEDED:
  - Memory usage is stable over time

  DESCRIPTION:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-manager (2.30.0-0ubuntu1) seems to have a memory leak my
machine running Lucid. I witnessed it using up to 120MB in the RES
column according to "top". My machine is 64 bit and is connected to a
APC uninterruptible power supply. I haven't yet tried unplugging it
to see if the UPS is somehow related to this problem. Another person
reported a similar problem in bug #196688 comment 25. Opening a new
bug seemed like a good idea since that bug was fixed 2 years ago.

Here is some information for what gnome-power-manager looks like after
running for a long period of time (from /proc/`pidof
gnome-power-manager`/smaps):
  0147b000-0881 rw-p 00:00 0

I rebooted my machine and let it sit at the login screen. I logged via ssh
and found that gnome-power-manager was using the following:

I logged out of my ssh session and didn't touch the machine until 5 and 1/2
hours later---and I logged in again remotely with ssh to check on
gnome-power-manager and found:
