[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2055153] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2024-02-27 Thread Alvin Jinsung Choi
Public bug reported:

I have booting related issue everytime I install NVIDIA-driver on Ubuntu
22.04 So the main problem is everytime I boot, Ubuntu would either

(1) boot fine (25% of the time)
(2) boot takes long time(about 2 min) (50% of the time)
(3) boot fails (25% of the time)

This symptom disappears when I uninstall NVIDIA driver so I'm pretty
sure it is related to NVIDIA driver but I don't know how to fix it.

For case (2) (boot takes long time), black screen with

'/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean, *** files, *** blocks'

hang for a long time.

For case (3) (boot fails), blackscreen with

'iwlwifi : invalid buffer destination'
'ACPI BIOS Error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE NOT_FOUND'
'ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previos error (AE_NOT_FOUND)'
'Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02'
'INFO: task plymouthd: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
'"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'
'INFO: task gpu-manager: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
'"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'

This screen appears and doesn't boot or blackscreen with cursor appears
and doesn't boot. It happens quite randomly and it really is frustrating
and want to resolve this issue. I've tried various things but it didn't
work out. Here are some things I tried

- deleting and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with 'purge, autoremove, apt install'
- Installing different driver version(525, 535, 545)
- trying boot-repair program
- disabling nouveau by modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
- 'nomodeset' by modifying /etc/default/grub (made it worse.. all boot
fails)
- tried various kernel version with various Ubuntu version (my laptop is very
new device so 20.04 had issues with touchpad, wifi, etc, therefore I mainly
tried 22.04)

However none of them seemed to resolve the problem I am facing. It
showed different symptoms time-to-time but mostly all of them were boot-
related. I am using a dualboot with windows

I am kind of lost and kindly ask for help. Here are some of the
specification that would be helpful

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1295627] Re: Wrong language (German) after fresh install

2021-03-18 Thread Alvin
This bug is still there in Ubuntu 20.10. You can change locales, but you
should be able to choose something more sensible in the installer.

If the automatic guess is only good for a handful of people, manually is
better.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1687817] Re: Inkscape 0.92.1-1 always reverts display units to px

2018-07-31 Thread Alvin Penner
appears to be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1671691

I would suggest trying the fix proposed at:

Status in inkscape package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Files created in Inkscape 0.92 no longer respect user's display units.
  Inkscape 0.91 didn't have this problem.

  Expected results:

  1. Open Inkscape
  2. Set File → Document Properties → Display Units to mm
  3. Edit and save the file, then quit Inkscape
  4. Reopen the docuemnt in Inkscape, and the Display Units value in the object
toolbar and the Document Properties should remain as mm.

  Actual results:

  1. Open Inkscape
  2. Set File → Document Properties → Display Units to mm
  3. Edit and save the file, then quit Inkscape
  4. Reopen the docuemnt in Inkscape, and the Display Units value in the object
toolbar and the Document Properties are set to px.
  5. Alternatively, File → Save As… immediately changes Display units to px.

  I work with laser cut patterns made in Inkscape, and maintaining
  document size is critical. I know about the recent 90/96 px/inch
  change, and this shouldn't be affected by that

I believe that if you make sure that all the text is in a single group,
then it will work normally. In other words, do not ungroup the text.

  Even a very basic test of this extension fails. First, I create some

  box to only disappear, or only the first letter of the text to
  disappear. The text is not mapped to the box. If fails reliably. It
  does not work at all.

  I've used this extension before, and had it work. I've checked my
  steps and this is how the Perspective extension is supposed to be
  used.

for reference this is the only output when run from command prompt

```
Title:
  Nautilus can't move files (at least images) in a stable way
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  Like people said in this report :
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1133477
  Nautilus is unstable when moving files.
  This is a severe critical bug on a modern desktop and the joke is that
  the bug hasn't been assigned since 3 years and the importance is
  "undecided"!!
  So I will help you : the importance is "CRITICAL" and the bug must be
  assigned as soon as possible!
  The bug is easily reproducible, cut a folder with 1000 images and
  paste it in another destination.
  I got two kind of results :
  1) Nautilus displays a popup saying that it is preparing the move, but the
popup progression is stuck and after minutes nothing happens. After killing
Nautilus I found that some files has been moved, at the speed of a 1990
computer while my computer is recent and fast.
  2) (another day) Cut/Paste two images folders from a Nautilus tab to another
tab : the whole Unity desktop has crashed. I had to turn off computer with
hardware button, loosing unsaved data. After reboot I saw that the images was
moved.
  I can't imagine to use a desktop unstable when moving files, this is a
  sooo basic feature! Will you consider this issue seriously?
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1574598] Re: Nautilus can't move files (at least images) in a stable way
2017-06-30 Thread Alvin
I've seen a variation of this for nearly a year and it's been bugging me
to no end
admittedly mine may be a different issue
about 50% of the time when I copy/move a file nautilus will segfault
it seems related to the generation of icons
I've not gotten any useful data out of running nautilus in a console and
looking for an error code, just says segfault
I'd be happy to run a development copy with a debug mode so I can track
it down, this has persisted in an upgrade from Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04
how I can help track this down?
could you attach the svg file that you are saving, so that we can see
Perhaps you might find it in backports.  Not sure what has been decided
with it, if it goes to updates or backports.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1481222] [NEW] Firefox does not respect the application preference order for opening files from the downloads library
2015-08-04 Thread Alvin
Public bug reported:
Steps to reproduce
- Check a file association. For example 'pdf'.
  kcmshell5 filetypes
  Application Preference Order is:
1. Okular
2. Karbon
3. ImageMagick (display Q16)
4. ImageMagick (display Q16)
- Use Firefox to download a pdf file. Firefox preferences for PDF are set to
'always ask'.
- Open the Firefox library at Downloads (down arrow - Show All Downloads) and
double click the downloaded PDF file.
- Chances are it will open using Karbon instead of the expected Okular
Likewise, clicking the folder icon next to the downloaded file will not
use Dolphin, but Gwenview and .zip files will not be opened with Ark,
but with Gwenview, or something else.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1429127] Re: Inkscape crash on select all same type objects
2015-05-13 Thread Alvin Penner
- confirmed on Windows 7, 32 bit, Inkscape 0.91 r13725 (Jan 30 2015)
- with no object selected, click on the menu item Edit-Select Same-Object
Type or Edit-Select Same-Stroke Style
- as far as I can tell, the crash does not occur if no object has ever been
created. It seems to occur after creating objects and then de-selecting them.
Also the crash message is not consistent. Below are four different crash
messages obtained from 4 separate crashes.
(inkscape.exe:2284): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_string_free: assertion `string
(inkscape.exe:4792): Pango-CRITICAL **: _pango_engine_shape_covers:
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1360204] Re: wpa_supplicant unable to authenticate on second virtual interface
2015-04-16 Thread Alvin
did you ever reach a solution / workaround?
I'm seeing the same issue with ath9k_htc
possibly a driver issue?
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1020023] Re: Packaging: Smartcard and PulseAudio support not enabled in freerdp
2014-12-03 Thread Alvin
I backported freerdp from Ubuntu Vivid, but on it segfaults when trying to use
smartcard redirection.
  Loading device service smartcard (static)
  registered device #1: SCARD (type=32 id=1)
  registered device #1: SCARD (type=32 id=1)
  registered device #1: SCARD (type=32 id=1)
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Does that mean that it will be compiled without smartcard support again?
I had the same problem. I found that my Libreoffice totally dies before
loading and it was fine after installing chrome-remote-desktop. There
should be a way to flag it as a bad package. The memory issues were
there as well before I uninstalled it.
Shouldn't this bug be split? Pulseaudio support works, but freerdp-x11
is still compiled without smartcard support.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318403] Re: Firefox continuously freezes and freezes the rest of the system (Ubuntu 14.04)
2014-10-15 Thread Alvin Ho
My observation, it happens typically when i do something on google
particularly gmail. I don't recall anything like that happening in
calendar, docs or youtube. To my observation, no other sites in my
experience have this (hang condition) problem.
At times, i can do a force quit. In that case, i usually logout  login again
just to restart X. If it is a complete hang,  that happens periodically, at
least 1ce a day, the power button does work for me, but you chaps are right,
ctrl-alt whatever, not even f1-f4 work; so that i can at least do a clean
shutdown. The system is completely hung. Here's my system info;
Acer aspire 4755g
intel core i5-2410M
NVIDIA GeForce 540M
Mem : 8gb
Firefox 33
Ubuntu 14.04.1
I followed this proc to install bublebee. Dono if i did something right/wrong,
but at that time, it worked. I would say it started happening about 2wk to a
month ago soon after i did an update.
http://coffeecup83.blogspot.sg/2013/04/ubuntu-1304-nvidia-optimus-bumblebee.html
personally, i'm not really sure it's a firefox problem since it only
happens on google  in particualr gmail!
2014-06-27 Thread Alvin
Apparently, the reason is due to apparmor denying these protocols to be visible
(on a side note, none of the others can connect for the same reason). If I boot
with apparmor=0 in the kernel line, all protocols appear. These can be found in
Would it possibly make sense to make those changes for traditional Chinese,
I think it is much more readible and pretty for WQY Micro Hei than WQY
So, Please change WenQuanYi Micro Hei back. or move to fonts-droid.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 590686] Re: Affect: toolbar label should be renamed/removed
2013-05-25 Thread Alvin Penner
@Kirby,  you might wish to consider reading the entire thread above,
since there have been a number of very interesting points raised,
indicating that the 'correct' answer is not entirely clear cut.
In any event, this has been fixed in the Inkscape trunk, which is the
development version. The fix was committed to rev 11062, on March 8,
2012.
see:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/revision/11062
you can see the effects of the fix by downloading a development version from
http://inkscape.org/download/?lang=en/
or by waiting for the official release of 0.49
  The tool controls bar for the Select tool contains a button group with
  the label Affect:.  This label is inappropriate for a couple of
  reasons:
  1. False implication that the buttons apply some sort of visual effect
  (blur, noise etc).  The buttons actually control the effects of
  scale/move operations on borders, gradients and patterns.
  2. Grammatical inconsistency.  Most (perhaps all?) other toolbar
  labels are nouns for the related property (Width:, Force:, Angle
  X etc).  Affect: is a verb.
  It would make sense to either remove the label or replace it with a
  suitable noun for the property being adjusted (maybe something like
  Scale/move properties: but less verbose!)
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1099005] Re: Saving text to PDF causes fill and outline to separate
2013-02-09 Thread Alvin Penner
two comments:
1.  It looks as if this is a Cairo issue. The fill part of the text
is being rendered using a call to cairo_show_glyphs. The stroke part of
the text is being rendered using calls to cairo_stroke and
cairo_glyph_path. These calls are executed in libcairo-2.dll. They
originate in the Inkscape routines CairoRenderContext::_showGlyphs and
CairoRenderContext::renderGlyphtext.
2.  The agreement can be slightly improved by removing the transform that
has been applied to the text. The text has the following transform:
transform=scale(0.99181249,1.0082551)
If this is removed using the XML editor then the agreement between fill and
stroke is somewhat better, especially at high magnification. That is to say,
the transform is apparently being applied correctly, both fill and stroke are
being scaled using it, but there appears to be some random numerical error,
perhaps round-off error, associated with applying it.
2013-02-09 Thread Alvin Penner
sorry, I should have mentioned that you can modify these defaults to be
whatever you want:
- first create a text object with the defaults you like, for example fill but
no stroke.
- go to File-Inkscape Preferences
- then go to Tools-Text
- click on This tools own style
- click on 'Take from selection'
- these preferences should now be remembered for future use.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1099005] Re: Saving text to PDF causes fill and outline to separate
2013-02-06 Thread Alvin Penner
confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape rev 12093.
when viewing the pdf in Adobe Reader the separation seems to depend quite a bit
on the zoom level.
The problem appears to be related to the fact that this text has both
Fill and Stroke defined. Normally when you draw text in Inkscape, it
will initially have only Fill, no Stroke.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 474963] Re: Can't export to WMF (UniConvertor failed)
if you are running Windows 7 and if you get a message that says
Python.exe has stopped working, then see Bug 656938 (for example
comment 13 in that report). This is a packaging issue, as far as I can
tell.
I would suggest trying to install uniconvertor 1.1.5 from
i see the same prob in fresh install ubntu 12.10 (not upgraded fm prev ver). My
libreoffice is a ppa version installed like this
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-help-en-us
libreoffice-pdfimport
Workarounds that i've tried
- switch to other application then back to libreoffice - doesn't always work
- minimize  maximize libreoffice - hasn't worked tonight
i'm wondering if this is contributing to the problem;
sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt
i got it from noobslab
http://www.noobslab.com/2012/10/important-thingstweaks-to-do-after.html
Some time back, i had a problem with acrobat reader, menu items were not
showing up. I did the above  the menu items appeared. I now blindly
continue doing that since it worked. i'm feeling very rotten now bec
i've just told the whole world how silly they are paying microsoft tons
of money. Now looks like i'm the dunce! :(
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 587634] Re: NM does not configure eth0
2012-09-25 Thread Alvin
I don't have any Ubuntu 10.04 installations left. Mounting NFS at boot
has been too troublesome since Ubuntu switched to Upstart. Lots of
other, more critical bugs concerning the boot process drove me away from
Ubuntu Server, and you really don't want to use Kubuntu 10.04 with the
older versions nepomuk/akonadi/virtuoso. I'm sorry, but you'd better
close the bug unless someone else says dhclient works, but Network-
Manager doesn't manage to get an address.
see this bug everytime I use git to clone a repository -- sometimes
preventing the ability to do so it authentication is required
happy to help anyone debug the issue -- competent with python haven't
done much of anything with C
have already tried removing and re-installing gnome-keyring to no avail
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 936245] Re: LibreOffice Writer can't open .odt files made with a previous version.
2012-02-20 Thread Alvin
I'd rather not put those files on a public bug tracker. They are all
bills to my customers. However, I created a similar template with
LibreOffice 3.4.5 on Windows and found out that it couln't be opened
either. Template is attached. Apport gave a message too, so I filed it
as Bug #936829. I'm not sure yet if the bugs are related because apport
doesn't react every time I try to open an .odt. (or .ott), but I'm
pretty sure it is the same bug.
** Attachment added: LibreOffice Writer template. Made with LibreOffice 3.4.5
