Not sure when this started, when i pull up gnome-system-log, cpu usage
goes through the roof. Starts by trying to view /var/log/btmp which is
not there, takes 2min then will respond. Then will use an increasing
amount if RAM and spike in using both cores. Tried to run it in
Terminal to see if there were any errors there doesn't seem to be any.
Tried re-install gnome-util that also made no difference. I can open
logs with gedit with no problem so assuming that it is just a memory
loop or something within the log viewer?

Resizing search tool window is easy

  Actual result:

Resizing search tool window is difficult, because it lacks bottom
right corner resize handle (same as in Nautilus). As the window is
dialogue like, it might not initially appear suitable size depending
on the context: physical screen size and the number of search results
might want you to make resize the window.

  2. activate a simple user-defined filter, e.g. to match "EE" (without the

Status in gnome-utils package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On nautilus when clicking on a font file that resides on a remote sftp
server it takes a very long time for gnome-font-viewer to actually
open the file. So far I measured 11 minutes to open a 15,9Kb file. By
copying the file to the local filesystem and clicking it opens
instantly. I haven't tried other remote protocols. The remote server
is running openSUSE 11.3 on a ADSL connection with 768Kbit/s upload
speed. Tried with both ttf and otf files and makes no difference. I'm
also seeing an abnormal amount of network traffic in system monitor
that is much greater than the actual font file size. I've killed the
gnome-font-viewer process because I got tired of waiting after it had
downloaded 60MB from the said server when trying to open a 195KB font
  file.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. in nautilus open a remote connection to a SFTP server (preferably one with
a slow connection so the problem is more evident)
  2. click on a font file to open it

  Expected results:
The font file opens in the time it would take to download and open it

  Actual results:
It takes a very long time to open the file and there is an abnormal amount of
network traffic not proportional to the file size

I dropped a notebook on my keyboard's Print Screen button. It sat
there for a few moments before I noticed it. I got hundreds of pop-ups
trying to take a screenshot. I tried banging 'Esc' but could not close
them fast enough, and they continued to pop up for several minutes,
while my system became unusable. I was forced to reboot the system.

The default Ubuntu desktop settings should protect me from
accidentally opening more than, oh, a few dozen instances of gnome-
  screenshot at a time.

  gnome-system-log: cannot read when scrolled-back

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I am trying to read earlier entries in the kern.log or the syslog so I
use the scroll bar on the text view to attempt to scroll back but I am
constantly thwarted by gnome-system-log scrolling to the tail of the
file because a new line was added to the log. gnome-system-log does
this even WHILE I am dragging the scroll elevator up attempting to
view earlier entries in the log!

I appreciate the value of automatically scrolling to the tail of the
log when a new entry is added. But doing so when the user is
attempting to scroll back to read earlier entries is thwarting the
user's use of the scroll bar.

I suggest that if the user has scrolled back to view earlier entries
in the log, gnome-system-log should suspend it's "scroll to tail when
new entries added" behavior until the user has scrolled to the end of
  the log again.

taken. And there was NO area selection. If I change the command from "
--area" to "--interactive", then by pressing the "print" key the
property window pops up (if i select there the checkbox area-selection
I can choose the area). Assigning "gnome-screenshot --area" to a
different key/ or combination of keys has the same result - the area
selection never shows up. (The interactive mode always works)

Do I miss something or did I found a bug? And can anyone tell me if
  there is a fix?

As a workaround I tried putting the command into a script and then
calling the script per shortcut with the same result: the area
selection never shows up, (the interactive mode does).

  I am using
Ubuntu 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31-20-generic (without compiz or any desktop
effects)

Bug description:
  I have Ubuntu 9.04 configured in a multi-monitor Xinerama setup of a
centre monitor 1600x1200 and two smaller monitors 1280x1024 on either
side i.e. different resolutions across the screens.

  In Ubuntu 9.04 gnome-screenshot now black/blanks-out the top 210
pixels of any screenshot I take of an individual window (i.e. Alt-
Printscreen) regardless of which monitor I take it on. The number of
pixels blanked out seems dependent on the difference in the y-offset
across the screens as configured in xorg.conf. Taking a screenshot of
the whole desktop works properly. The problem did not occur at all in
  Ubuntu 8.10.

Here's the relevant extract from my xorg.conf:
  Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "ScreenCentre" 1280 0
   Screen 1 "ScreenLeft" 0 210
   Screen 2 "ScreenRight" 2880 210
   Option "Xinerama" "On"
  EndSection

Note that the left and right monitors are slightly lower on my desk
than the centre monitor so I've set their y-offsets in xorg.conf to
210 pixels (from what otherwise should be 1200-1024=176 pixels) so
that when I drag windows between monitors the widows appear at the
  same level.

I'll attach a screenshot of the whole desktop to illustrate the xorg
offsets, and screenshots of individual windows which illustrate the
  problem.

STATUS UPDATE: what's left to be done is the lucid SRU, thank you.

Status in gnome-utils package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
The Log File Viewer displays cryptic abbreviations followed by an
equals sign to present items in the log. People find this layout
difficult to read and interpret. It's not an efficient way to present
the information. A more human friendly layout is possible. For
example, a Nautilus like "List" or "Details" view with headers.
Information would list under its corresponding header and accordingly
  be easily found and interpreted.

The current layout & manner of presenting log information should be
changed to a more "human friendly" presentation.

  To replicate:

   1. Start gnome-screenshot.

   2. Choose a save directory, but type it into the "Location"
box. Don't choose a folder by clicking to it (that doesn't seem to
  trigger this bug).

   3. Notice that the chosen save directory is shown in the "Save in

   4. The new file is saved into the home directory (or whatever

  Steps to reproduce this sub-bug:

  1. Add GNOME Invest applet to a panel.
  2. In its preferences, add some stock symbols, like GOOG, AMD, INTC (thanks
darthanubis in #ubuntu+1 for these sample symbols).
  3. Close the preferences.
  4. Click the applet.

If you have a window over the invest applet, or maximised, you won't
see a shadow in compiz. Minimise all windows, however, and you'll see
the shadow. Now click the Invest applet button again to dismiss it and
  only the shadow stays.

there seems to be a dispute if that is a bug or an intended design
decision. thus bug 10905 and its duplicates always get closed. people
seem to agree that not being able to take screenshots is not intended
bahavior and considered a bug. thus this report is allowed to stay
  open :)

a known workaround for taking screenshots of menus is to directly launch the
screengrabber with a delay like so:
  gnome-screenshot --delay=5

  ubuntu 64-bit desktop, 9.10 --

When using the "Take Screenshot" utility from the menus (Applications
-> Accessories -> Take Screenshot), and selecting "Grab the Current
Window" radio button, the screenshot isn't generated properly.

  - When choosing to "include the window border" in the screenshot, the
screenshot utility seems to die -- the screenshot isn't taken and the
"save as" dialog does not appear. (That is to say, after clicking the
  "Take Screenshot" button, nothing happens)

  - When choosing NOT to "include the window border", the 'save as'
dialog does appear and appears to work properly with one major
exception -- the screenshot saved (and the screenshot thumbnail shown
in the 'save as' dialog) is NOT of the current window. Instead, the
screenshot that is taken appears to be of the upper left corner of the
desktop. See attached screenshot for example of the result.

  Notes:

Display drivers: VirtualBox drivers. (Ubuntu is running as guest in
  VirtualBox)

Tested with "current window" being both firefox and nautilus, and
gedit. Results are always the same -- it is impossible to take a
  window-only screenshot.

I can always press the "Print screen" key to take a screenshot of my

  just doesn't work anymore.

Note: this is in fact only a symptom of bug 10905 that states that no
hotkeys/shortcuts whatsoever can be triggered when a menu is open.
there seems to be a dispute if that is a bug or an intended design
decision. thus bug 10905 and its duplicates always get closed. people
seem to agree that not being able to take screenshots is not intended
bahavior and considered a bug. thus this report is allowed to stay
  open :)

a known workaround for taking screenshots of menus is to directly launch the
screengrabber with a delay like so:
  gnome-screenshot --delay=5

  Steps to reproduce this sub-bug:

  1. Add GNOME Invest applet to a panel.
  2. In its preferences, add some stock symbols, like GOOG, AMD, INTC (thanks
darthanubis in #ubuntu+1 for these sample symbols).
  3. Close the preferences.
  4. Click the applet.

If you have a window over the invest applet, or maximised, you won't
see a shadow in compiz. Minimise all windows, however, and you'll see
the shadow. Now click the Invest applet button again to dismiss it and
  only the shadow stays.

I dropped a notebook on my keyboard's Print Screen button. It sat

The default Ubuntu desktop settings should protect me from

When I take a screenshot using gnome-screenshot, I usually like to
include the mouse pointer. This is because I usually take screenshots
only when reporting bugs, so I like the interaction to be depicted
just as I see it when I'm experiencing it.

The problem: For example, if I take a screenshot of my browser and I
hover the mouse pointer over a link so that the mouse pointer icon
changes from an "arrow" to a "clicking hand", the mouse pointer still
shows up as the "arrow" icon in the final screenshot.

This example is in fact what actually happened, and the attached

«/var/log/secure»: No such file or directory

Obviously, years passed since /var/log/XFree86.0.log lost relevance, whereas
things like
/var/log/sys.log and /var/log/secure never existed in the first place.

This bug report applies to Jaunty alpha3, gnome-utils version

  I can reproduce a crash of gnome-system-log 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 (Lucid):

  1. start gnome-system-log and it shows (a quite big) /var/log/messages
  2. activate a simple user-defined filter, e.g. to match "EE" (without the
quotes)
  3. enable "Show matches only"
  => it aborts:

There appears to be a problem with the way that Unity applications
  place uses .desktop files...

  The /usr/share/applications/baobab.desktop and
~/.local/share/applications/baobab.desktop files both exist, but Unity
ignores them - the "Disk Usage Analyzer" application is missing from
  the applications place.

If I put a copy of baobab.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications and
change the Categories line then the "Disk Usage Analyzer" application
IS shown in the applications place. See the npw.baobab.desktop file
  attached.

Having to find and edit .desktop files is well beyond the capabilities
  of many users.

Missing applications is an important drawback for an application
  launcher!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 549935]

Anders Johansson doc

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
gnome-screenshot ignores "--area" if called from shortcut

Status in gnome-screenshot package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gnome-utils package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
By pressing "Print" a screenshot of the whole desktop gets taken. But I would
prefer if I could always choose the area of the screenshot by hand. By calling
"gnome-screenshot --area" from commandline you can select the area.

So I went into System -> Shortcuts (? have a German layout) and deactivated
the shortcut "print" for taking a screenshot.
Now I added a new shortcut with the command: "gnome-screenshot --area" and
assigned the "print" key to it. (Theoretically I am done at this point)

But if I press the print key a screenshot of the whole screen gets

  I am using
Ubuntu 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31-20-generic (without compiz or any desktop
effects)
