Status in xsane package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: simple-scan

simple-scan is incapable of scanning from automated document feeders,
while single-page scans from the flatbed glass work fine.

  Devices tested:
  1. Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet Pro L7680 All-in-One (with maverick meerkat)
  2. EPSON Stylus Office BX625FWD (with natty narwhal)

The latter displays communication error for photo scans, and crashes
its firmware (needs to be switched off and on again) in text mode when
using the ADF (scan all sheets from ADF or similar).

I am tagging the bug security because it crashes the Epson Office

In the attached debug information, there are:

  - two successful photo mode (300 dpi) scans from the positive/flatbed glass
(EPSON)
  - one failed scan in photo mode from the EPSON device (which recovered after
pressing OK)
  - one failed scan in text mode that crashed the EPSON device (which needed to

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 783950] Re: simple-scan crashes EPSON Office ADF scanners, fails with hp ADF scanners

2015-01-06 Thread Captain Chaos
This bug is still alive and kicking. Trying to scan from the ADF of an
Epson XP-810, via the network, hangs the scanner. It loads the document,
but when it is about to start the actual scan, the Epson starts flashing
all its lights and has to be turned off, and xsane reports:
Error/Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O. Simple-scan
fails with a similar message. Scanning from the glass plate works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1386186] Re: Screen locking issue - account with no password set

2014-11-03 Thread Captain Zlog
Been doing some more investigation on this problem. Looked in System
Settings-Security Privacy and found on the Security tab that both
Waking from suspend and Returning from blank screen were both
checked, indicating password required in both cases. Unchecked both
items and the problem has now gone away - functionality is now as
expected. Not sure if these items were checked under 14.04 and just
ignored when resuming from suspend or whether the upgrade to 14.10
actually set these items. Bug can now be closed.

Bug description:
Have an account with no password set. When computer resumes from
suspend state, where user with no pasword is logged in, system now
request password and will not unlock screen.

Expected action is to automatically unlock screen without asking for a
  password.

Workaround is to get the 'Switch Account' screen up and select the
same user and then click Log In - no password requested this time.
Same action occurs if Ctl-Alt-L pressed when logged in as this user.

This was working fine under Ubuntu 14.04 but now performs incorrectly
since upgrade to 14.10 (not a fresh install). Installed version of

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1387562] Re: Touchpad settings ignored

2014-11-03 Thread Captain Zlog
Been looking into this further and found that it only affected affected
one account on the computer - the other accounts worked as expected.
Eventually found that the impacted account had a syndaemon command
running at Startup to disable the touchpad whilst typing, as this
function didn't work in System Settings. However, the setting to Disable
touchpad whilst typing was still set in System Settings. Turning off
this setting seems to have cured the problem. Obviously the original bug
that causes the Disable touchpad whilst typing system setting not to
work still needs to be addressed.

  Touchpad settings ignored

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10. Have two-finger scroll and tap to click
selected in system settings. When I log in these functions work but seems that
as soon as an application is started, including the Dash, two-finger scroll
and tap to click stop working. Logging out and back in again restores the
functionality but then it is lost as soon as an application starts again.
I found this was an intermittent problem under 14.04 but only when resuming
from sleep. Now the function basically does not work at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1327820] [NEW] Multi-monitor - Maximized Firefox windows cast shadows on adjacent monitors

2014-06-08 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this is a Firefox bug or a Compiz one. Feel free to
reassign. What happens is that maximized Firefox windows with the
keyboard focus cast shadows on windows on adjacent monitors on a
multimonitor setup. It appears to happen only with Firefox, I will
report if I see it happen with other programs.

This is reported as fixed in bug #928807, so perhaps it wasn't (fully),
or it has regressed. Or maybe this is an unrelated problem. I'm seeing
it in Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit on a laptop with an NVidia GeForce GTX 765M.

Attached is a screenshot showing the problem. I have three monitors,
with the launcher placed on the middle one. The editor window is on my
third monitor and as you can see Firefox is casting a shadow on it.

2014-06-01 Thread Captain Obvious
Reinstalling the nvidia-331 package appears to have solved it. Still
not sure what caused the first build to fail, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232016] Re: Can't scan from Brother ADS-2100

2014-05-25 Thread Captain Chaos
Still not working in Ubuntu 14.01. Situation exactly the same: Simple
Scan sees the scanner and correctly identified it as a Brother ADS-2100,
but when I try to scan something, it says Failed to scan\Unable to
start scan.

** Changed in: simple-scan (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired = New

  Can't scan from Brother ADS-2100

Status in “simple-scan” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm trying to use my new Brother ADS-2100 double sides document
scanner with ADF in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit, but having no luck. Scanimage

says sane_start: Invalid argument. sane-find-scanner does not report
seeing the scanner at all. Simple-scan sees the scanner, but gives an
error message when I try to scan.

I know the scanner works and the problem is not with the cable or
something like that, because it works in Windows. I have also tried
  another USB cable.

The output of scanimage -L is:

device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother ADS-2100 USB scanner

The output of sudo scanimage -L is the same (but it takes longer). I
will attach the output of sane-find-scanner and sudo sane-find-
scanner, but both report not finding *any* USB devices, which is
strange, because doesn't scanimage also use libsane to find the
  scanner?

  lsusb does find the scanner:

Bus 003 Device 021: ID 04f9:60a1 Brother Industries, Ltd

It does not matter which USB port I use (I had it on a hub at first,
but it doesn't work on two different USB ports on the machine itself
  either).

Simple-scan does report seeing the scanner (as a Brother ADS-2100,
which is correct), but when I try to scan something it works for a
while and then gives a red error bar saying Failed to scan/Unable to
start scan . I will attach screenshots and the output of simplescan
  --debug.

I followed Brother's instructions and installed the brother4 driver
using the deb from their website

as well as the deb they provide for setting the udev rules to allow
  scanning by regular users

I have already tried various potential solutions I found around the
  web:

  * adding lines to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules or
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
  * adding myself to the lp and scanner groups

None of it seemed to make any difference, and also I think Brother's
debs already take care of those things. In addition, if the problem
was with device permissions, scanning would work as root, right?

Please let me know what other information I can provide or things I
can try to get to the bottom of this!

2014-05-25 Thread Captain Chaos
I saw the comment about completing a check list, but unfortunately it
doesn't actually contain any links. If someone will point me to it I'll
happily follow a check list, although given the amount of information
I've already provided I wonder whether it will tell anybody anything
they couldn't already know from reading my bug report.

as well as the deb they provide for setting the udev rules to allow
scanning by regular users
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html#u13.04).

I have already tried various potential solutions I found around the web:

* adding lines to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules or
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
* adding myself to the lp and scanner groups

None of it seemed to make any difference, and also I think Brother's
debs already take care of those things. In addition, if the problem was
with device permissions, scanning would work as root, right?

Please let me know what other information I can provide or things I can
try to get to the bottom of this!

Title:
  Can't scan from Brother ADS-2100

Status in “simple-scan” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I'm trying to use my new Brother ADS-2100 double sides document
scanner with ADF in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit, but having no luck. Scanimage
reports that it sees the scanner, but when I try to scan a page it
says sane_start: Invalid argument. sane-find-scanner does not report
seeing the scanner at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232016] Re: Can't scan from Brother ADS-2100

2013-09-27 Thread Captain Chaos
The output of scan-image -T is as follows:

scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567
scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

All indications are that there is *some* communication with the scanner,
but then something goes wrong.

Bug description:
I have a Sennheiser USB headset, which in Ubuntu 11.10 is reported
correctly, once, in the sound settings when I plug it in. However in
  12.04 it is reported twice:

  Digital Output (S/PDIF)
  Sennheiser USB headset

  Speakers
  Sennheiser USB headset

Both have a headset icon. Only the Speaker entry appears to work
correctly; when I try to select the Digital Output (S/PDIF) entry
the selection usually immediately jumps to some other entry.

It's also strange that the icon is a headset, so it appear to
recognize that it's a headset, yet the label for the working entry is
Speakers. I don't think that is correct, it should be Headphones
(as it is for the headphones connector on my motherboard).

other way to fix this problem!

Annoyingly, it doesn't happen every time. I will try to determine what
the pattern is, if any.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 975941] Re: [soundnua]: Spurious Digital Output S/PDIF output entry for USB headset

2012-04-13 Thread Captain Chaos
I have added the requested line to USB-Audio.conf, and it has succeeded
in removing the spurious Digital Output entry from the Sound Settings!

However, the headset is still identified as Speakers in the Sound
Settings, instead of Headphones (even though the icon is a headset).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 975941] [NEW] Spurious Digital Output S/PDIF output entry for USB headset

2012-04-07 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

I have a Sennheiser USB headset, which in Ubuntu 11.10 is reported
correctly, once, in the sound settings when I plug it in. However in
12.04 it is reported twice:

Digital Output (S/PDIF)
Sennheiser USB headset

Speakers
Sennheiser USB headset

Both have a headset icon. Only the Speaker entry appears to work
correctly; when I try to select the Digital Output (S/PDIF) entry the
selection usually immediately jumps to some other entry.

It's also strange that the icon is a headset, so it appear to recognize
that it's a headset, yet the label for the working entry is Speakers.
I don't think that is correct, it should be Headphones (as it is for
the headphones connector on my motherboard).

Let me know if you need additional information or if I can help in any
other way to fix this problem!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 905686] Re: nautilus assert failure: nautilus: ../../src/xcb_io.c:528: _XAllocID: Assertion `ret != inval_id' failed.

2012-01-25 Thread Captain Chaos
My bug #921689 was just automatically marked as a duplicate of this one
by the apport retracing service. I just wanted to check whether that
is actually correct, as my crash has a different stack trace:

StacktraceTop:
 raise () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
 abort () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
 __assert_fail () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
 _XAllocID () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libX11.so.6
 XRenderCreateCursor () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXrender.so.1

It occurred in XRenderCreateCursor(), not in XCreatePixmap(). Should I
leave it as a duplicate?

2012-01-25 Thread Captain Chaos
As a result of the crash almost all the top right menus are gone (even
after a reboot). Only the blueooth and network icons are still there.
The volume icon, system menu, message menu, etc. are gone, so I can't
even log out or restart normally anymore. How can I get them back?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 727928] Re: Upon starting a program full screen with NVIDIA Xinerama, the window is immediately moved to the wrong monitor

2011-12-30 Thread Captain Chaos
 Why not Unity-2D?

Because Unity-2D doesn't work with Xinerama either. It puts everything
on my left monitor, and puts an identical copy of the screen on the
second and third monitors. If I try to drag something off the left
monitor it just disappears, and clicking the mouse on the second or
third monitor has no effect.

The *only* combination that (more or less) works for me (on a system
which is by no means old or exotic) is the proprietary driver with GNOME
Classic without effects. If that is the only thing that Ubuntu can offer
me, then it's not unreasonable to expect it to at least work correctly.

To the contrary, this is a metacity behavior, not by Ubuntu's design.

I get that it isn't by design. That's what makes it a bug. And I
understand that the bug is in metacity, that's why I filed the bug on
metacity.

I understand that Ubuntu doesn't have unlimited resources, but this bug
can't be that hard to fix. Note that the window is initially opened on
the *correct* monitor. But then (once it first receives the focus, it
appears to be, which isn't always immediately) something (presumably
metacity) moves the window to the wrong monitor.

It is active behaviour, probably a feature which is misfiring, which
can't be that hard to just turn off or disable, or at least make
configurable, for someone familiar with the metacity codebase. Perhaps
it even already is configurable, if only someone could tell me how!

I'd also like to point out that there is no evidence that this is
specific to Nvidia, or even Xinerama. The only way I can get multiple
monitors to work at all is with Xinerama, but for all I know the same
would happen without it.

Title:
Upon starting a program full screen with NVIDIA Xinerama, the window
is immediately moved to the wrong monitor

Status in “metacity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: metacity

On a multi-monitor system, when starting a program which starts full
screen (such as Firefox or Thunderbird, if you closed them while being
full screen), the window is immediately whisked away and moved to the
wrong monitor. This is extremely irritating. I am forever having to
drag windows back to the monitor I want them to be displayed on, and
  on which they initially opened.

I'm guessing that it's metacity which is doing this (I'm not using
desktop effects), but if that is wrong please let me know which
  package it should be!

More details: I have two NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX cards, and three
monitors. My middle monitor is connected to the first card, the other
two to the second card. I'm using the proprietary NVidia driver with
Xinerama enabled in order to be able to use all three screens as one
desktop. I shall attach my xorg.conf file for the exact configuration.

It doesn't happen for every program. For instance, gedit also
remembers when you closed it while it was full screen, and opens full
screen again, but it stays on the monitor it opens op. It happens
consistently for Firefox and Thunderbird at least.

Initially, the window opens on the monitor the mouse is on, as
expected, but within a fraction of a second, it is moved to the left
monitor. It always moves to the left monitor, never another one. It
also only seems to happen the first time the window gets the focus.
Usually that is right away, but occasionally the window will open
behind another window, stay where it is, and then jump to the left
monitor when I first move my mouse over it.

Please let me know how I can help debug this problem!

Pedro, Chris, note that this bug is not about the ~3, it's about the
fact that the descenders of the letters are cut off. I've attached
another screenshot showing the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 896639] Re: pasted URL always shortened even when turned off

2011-11-27 Thread Captain Chaos
Matt, it's highly unlikely that Gwibber would be using t.co. As far as I
know that is a private service created and exclusively used by Twitter.

Gwibber shows your tweets as downloaded from Twitter, not as you posted
them, and Twitter unfortunately shortens every link using their own link
shortener, whether you want it to or not, and whether it actually
becomes shorter or not.

The behaviour I am seeing is that as soon as I paste a link into
Gwibber, it gets shortened (using is.gd, in my case), so before it is
even posted.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 727928] Re: Upon starting a program full screen, the window is immediately moved to the wrong monitor

2011-11-23 Thread Captain Chaos
I installed Oneiric Ocelot, and the problem still exists. It is still
the case that:

* I have to use the proprietary NVidia driver because the open source driver
STILL does not support multiple cards.
* I have to enable Xinerama to be able to drag windows between monitors. If I
don't I get completely separate desktops.
* If Xinerama is enabled 3D effects don't work. Ubuntu apparently doesn't
realise this and still tries to use the Ubuntu (in other words Unity 3D)
session by default, which doesn't work (it just hangs), leaving me unable to
log in.
* I have to install and use the GNOME Classic (no effects) session to be able
to log in at all.
* Which STILL moves every full screen window that opens to my left monitor
instead of the center one.

Why is it so hard to get Ubuntu to leave my windows alone and let them
stay on the monitor on which it opens?!

Title:
Upon starting a program full screen, the window is immediately moved
  to the wrong monitor

Status in “metacity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: metacity

On a multi-monitor system, when starting a program which starts full
screen (such as Firefox or Thunderbird, if you closed them while being
full screen), the window is immediately whisked away and moved to the
wrong monitor. This is extremely irritating. I am forever having to
drag windows back to the monitor I want them to be displayed on, and
  on which they initially opened.

I'm guessing that it's metacity which is doing this (I'm not using
desktop effects), but if that is wrong please let me know which
  package it should be!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 727928] Re: Upon starting a program full screen, the window is immediately moved to the wrong monitor

2011-10-15 Thread Captain Chaos
I tried to reproduce the problem with the live CD of Oneiric Ocelot, but
since the open source NVidia driver in there does not support multiple
cards, I can't. It also did not allow me to install the proprietary
NVidia driver.

Even if it did, I doubt that I would be able to reproduce the bug since
it now forces you to use Unity, which I'm sure uses a different window
manager.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 849162] [NEW] Can't save changes to table after setting default value for INTEGER column

2011-09-13 Thread Captain Chaos
Public bug reported:

After setting a default value for a column of type INTEGER using the
LIbreOffice Base Table Design window, it is not possible to save the
changes. When pressing the save button in the toolbar, or choosing Save
from the File menu, nothing happens. When trying to close the Table
Design windows, upon choosing Yes on the The table has changed. Do you
want to save the changes? dialog, nothing happens (the window is not
closed). There appears to be no way to set the default value on an
INTEGER column!

Changing the default on a BOOLEAN column does work.

I will attach a database which demonstrates the problem. Edit the
Invoices table and try to set the default value for the ordinal or
clientId columns.
