Title:
Screen freeze before the login screen (if the third party software
  option was selected)

Status in GNOME Shell:
  New
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [ Workaround ]

  1. Install *without* the third-party option.

  2. sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras

  3. sudo apt remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi

  [ Original Description ]

The problem started to appear 2 weeks ago after one of my daily
updates. It also happens after I re-install the system from a freshly
downloaded ISO file. The system freezes at the moment, it starts the
  gnome display manager.

I file the bug-report after a partial upgrade just before I will
reboot the system. If needed I can reboot in recovery mode, since the
gnome display manager is not started in that case.

I tried the continue button without effect and also "apt upgrade" and
"apt dist-upgrade" do have the same effect

I run the VM from the Host-OpenZFS file system, so I can restore to
before the update. Recently I use a Virtualbox snapshot to restore the
  system to before the update/upgrade.

If you need log files, let me know.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1562875] Re: Totem can't play H264 on fresh 16.04 beta install

2016-04-28 Thread emptythevoid
Mine broke on upgrade from 14.04 -> 15.10 -> 16.04 64 bit.  I removed
the multiverse repository, reloaded, added it back in, reloaded, then
from the command line, reinstalled ubuntu-restricted-extras. For some
reason, Synaptic wasn't installing anything. It just blinked and said
all was well. I had to use apt-get to get it to do anything. May not
be related to this bug, but I'm sharing just in case.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 907311] Re: Not exiting properly? An instance of Brasero is already running, exiting

2013-05-22 Thread emptythevoid
I've been dealing with this bug since 12.04. I just freshly installed
13.04 64-bit on my main machine and if I double-click on an ISO and
Brasero opens to burn it, even if I just cancel out of that window,
brasero remains running and does not exit on it's own. This prevents
being able to open brasero again until one kills the running instance.
This is a show-stopper. Seriously needs to be fixed, or change the
default app for burning ISOs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 965895] Re: After boot, NetworkManager indicator menu only shows four entries

2013-05-02 Thread emptythevoid
This does not seem to be a problem with Ubuntu 13.04, but if you've done
the fix above where you've renamed /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop
to /etc/xdg/autostart/znm-applet.desktop, and then you update from
12.10 to 13.04, you will see two network applets after login. Make sure
to remove the znm-applet.desktop file you made to correct this behavior.

Title:
gtk_file_chooser_get_current_folder() function is broken in 2.24.10
  GTK+ 2.24.15

Status in GTK+ GUI Toolkit:
  Fix Released
Status in “gtk+2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu users of EiskaltDC++ reported us about problem with GTK+ dialog for
choosing folders: it always returns path to home directory instead of chosen
one.
  https://code.google.com/p/eiskaltdc/issues/detail?id=1392#c8

After small investigation I found that problem affects only Ubuntu Quantal
and Raring. Bug is reproducible only in GTK+ 2.24.10, and it was fixed in
GTK+ 2.24.15. Related link:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=691040

Unfortunately, GTK+ 2.24.15 is not available in Ubuntu Raring yet. But I
think that packages will be updated soon, because Ubuntu is not in freeze yet.
So the most important question is about Ubuntu Quantal. Please add necessary
patch into the package:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1070004] Re: For applications using simplified save dialogues, selecting a destination through Other... saves to /HOME directory

For applications using simplified save dialogues, selecting a
destination through Other... saves to /HOME directory

Status in “gtk+2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Certain applications, like DeVeDe or Openshot, use a simplified save
dialogue box. From these simplified lists, the user is presented with
some default directories to save in (Video, Desktop, Home, etc).
Selecting any of these destinations from this menu works as expected.
However, if the user wishes to save to some other location besides the
ones suggested, they must click on Other... which displays the full,
normal save dialogue. When this is used, it does not matter which
directory the user chooses - the application will save to the /HOME
  directory.

I have tested this using DeVeDe on Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit (fresh install)
and 12.10 32-bit (upgrade install). This *is not* a bug with DeVeDe,
but it was the first application I found that was using the simplified
save dialogue (and I also was able to reproduce this using Openshot,
which does the same thing). If the application uses the normal save
dialogue box, everything works as expected.

Please help me provide the information needed for this bug report. I
do not know what package to file this against, or what other
information that needs to be attached. It would also be helpful if
someone can reproduce this. I have not filed a bug report because I
did not know what to attach or what package to file against. Any help
  would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a video demonstrating the problem using DeVeDe. I tell DeVeDe
to export a video to my Desktop from the defaults menu, which works as
expected. I then tell it to save it to my Desktop, but using the
Other... menu. I would expect it to say that there's a file already
there with the same name, and offer to overwrite it. Instead, it saves
the file to my /Home directory.

Juan, I tested your workaround on my Ubuntu 12.10 netbook and it
corrected the problem. It's certainly doesn't actually fix the
problem, but it allows everything to work normally in the meantime.
Good work.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 919767] Re: brasero stays in memory after use

2013-01-28 Thread emptythevoid
This is also the case for me on my 12.04 32-bit system but *only* if I
double-click on an ISO and launch Brasero that way. If I open Brasero
*first*, tell it I want to burn an image, and then choose the ISO,
Brasero closes as expected when I'm finished.

  New
Status in “brasero” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Basero 3.2.0 as it installs from the ISO. Synaptic says installed
  version is 3.2.0-0ubuntu6

Using either ubuntu studio 10.04 or 12.04(alpha dec19) if brasero is
started by a right click on a toc file (or maybe a cue file) it opens
a dialogue to burn a cd from. I can cancel or burn a cd, but in either
case ps x still shows brasero running after the dialogue has gone when
the application has completed it's task successfully. trying to burn a
cd from a second toc file or even open brasero from the main menu then
fails until brasero has been killed (kill pid). This is not a problem
when opening an audio file (wav, ogg etc.) as the main brasero window
is opened. I think that because the burn dialogue normally would not
exit brasero it doesn't exit here either, however, the main window is
  not shown to exit from.

This is important to UbuntuStudio because the main DAW (Ardour) puts
out toc files as a finished product and brasero is needed (since the
loss of gcdmaster) to actually print the file to CD. So this should be
listed as a ubuntu studio bug as well.

However my 32-bit netbook (referenced in my earlier post) is still
spitting up errors for andika,conf

My 64-bit laptop that has a clean install of 12.10 is getting no font
errors at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1062166] Re: screen goes dark although screensaver is switched off

2012-10-20 Thread emptythevoid
I'm not certain which one thing fixed it, but here's what I did:

Open dconf editor from the Dash
Click on the Find, and type Power.
Here's what I've got set:
idle-brightness = 0
idle-dim-time = 0
sleep-display-ac = 0
sleep-display-battery = 0
sleep-inactive-ac-timeout = 0
sleep-inactive-battery-timeout = 0

Try setting those and see if it helps you. Again, not exactly sure
which one thing fixes it - haven't taken the time to check. And
ultimately, one shouldn't have to do this in the first place.

Title:
Brasero does not copy multisession CD:s properly

Status in “brasero” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: brasero

When I try to copy a multisession CD Brasero just copies the first
  session and claims it's done.

I tried to copy a CD with ~290 MB of data. Brasero said it was going
to burn the entire 290 MBs, but after ~50 MB (the first session) it
stopped and said that the CD was successfully copied. The burning
progress bar wasn't even filled yet.

  I use Brasero 0.7.1-3ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 8.04.1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 973014] Re: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, (libgstvideoparsersbad.so), causes a failure to decode many common video files encoded as AVC 1 Baseline - L2.1, Baseline - L1.1 others

Thanks for this fix! Just applied it, and it worked for me as well. No
ill effects so far. Brilliant!

Title:
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, (libgstvideoparsersbad.so), causes a
failure to decode many common video files encoded as AVC 1 Baseline -
  L2.1, Baseline - L1.1 others

Status in The GStreamer Multimedia Framework:
  Fix Released
Status in “gstreamer0.10” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
*Adjusted description so as not to show as email to non logged in people
  Most affected files are Baseline@L2.1, Baseline@L1.1 *

Those would be the most likely to fail to be decoded but certainly not
limited to kust them.
These files are commonly found online though many users will have locally.
Also affected other than totem, totem youtube plugin, banshee would be
the mozilla-plugin minitube.
Typically the audio will play with no video though sometimes neither

*Moving libgstvideoparsersbad.so to a .bak allows decoding to take
place on the previously affected files, at least so here*

Attached is a cut small sample file, noting the file plays fine in all non
gstreamer players in all gstreamer players in 11.10 earlier
The file should be playable in totem, banshee firefox with totem-mozilla
plugin installed but only audio is decoded

Just updated from 10.04 to 12.04 last night, with all updates current,
and this happens to me as well.
