Not really long ago, but it is not a serious problem any more.

By chance, I had this error just yesterday, after months of not seeing
it, while printing almost simultaneously from two different evince
instances.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 877256] Re: Cann't open ".war" format

2011-11-10 Thread Francesco Formizzi
Yes, it's a big problem, the only way to open it is rename war file or
extract archive with jar. There's another problem, too: if war file is
contained into an ear archive there's no way to open or rename it...

Hello,
I'm having the same annoying problem but I've never installed any kde packages.

aste@dv6790:~$ dpkg -S /usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml
dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml.

As all the other affected users the bug showed up after upgrading to
11.10

Thanks

but it's not mapped in any mime files under /usr/share/mime/packages

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 524967] Re: Screen brightness doesn't work on Vaio Y

2012-02-12 Thread Francesco Giudici
Update on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric)
Hi there,
just a quick update on screen brightness issue status, for the Vaio Y series.
The problem seems related to gnome-power-manager & intel 915 driver... Kamal
Mostafa has released a path that should be already present in Ubuntu 11.10.
I don't know if this due to the Kamal patch (but I think so), but now it is
possible to control our (sony Y) brightness through:
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Anyway, the gnome-power-manager links to
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/
in order to read/set backlight. Unfortunately, this control is completely void
and does not produce any effect.
A suggested workaround is to start linux with boot parameter:
acpi_backlight=vendor

This produce the desired effect: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/ disappears,
BUT the sony_laptop module, as does not found acpi support to brightness, takes
in care brightness management creating its own sony brightness device... and
yes, gnome-power-manager prefers it than our beloved intel_backlight.
Unfortunately, we NEED sony_laptop module, because takes care of the fn keys
bindings.
So, two ways are available:
1) modify and recompile sony_laptop module in order to ignore brightness
control + acpi_backlight=vendor on boot
2) The old and still pretty good acpi event management through custom scripts

Solution 2 is easier and less intrusive, so I have updated the brightness
scripts, in order to adopt the new brightness control interface and sync with
the "void" acpi_video0 control when pressing brightness up and down keys.
The install script is now a little smarter, doing checks in order to prevent
installation where not needed.

I leave here a copy of the patch, hoping could be of help

Cheers

Francesco

Running a fresh install of Xubuntu Natty 32-bit, if I log in then launch
Thunar (1.2.1-3ubuntu2), Thunar will not appear right away, and the desktop
workspace will be unresponsive (excluding panels & other applications). Thunar
eventually appears around 20 seconds later (est.), usually accompanied by the
following error popup:

  "Launch Error"
The folder could not be opened
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

In the accompanying instance of Thunar, the "Network" item is missing
from the side pane shortcut view.

Depending on how long I've waited, usually the second or third Thunar
launch attempt comes up very quickly, and the "Network" shortcut is
  present in the side pane.

It might be also relevant to know that I am using the onscreen keyboard
and that I have enabled the hover click by the hover buttons provided by
the onscreen keyboard.

(On a side note: The fact, that the onscreen keyboard has buttons to
enable the hover click (automatic click) does not make the bug #810711
a11y: add option to start dwelling obsolete. In fact, a user that can
only use dwell clicking has no way to get to the onscreen keyboard as
long as the options menu is not dwellable.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 545044] Re: Xdg-open should use kde-open instead of kfmclient

2018-08-09 Thread Francesco Belladonna
If you need a temporary fix to this issue to get xdg-open to work (lot
of tools depend on it), I recommend exporting the environment variable
KDE_SESSION_VERSION=5 (or 4 or 6 or whatever is your KDE version). Fixes
the problem (this environment variable is entirely missing in my
installation)

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xdg-utils

In /usr/bin/xdg-open, open_kde attempts to use the kfmclient binary to
open the provided URI. Kfmclient is according to Ubuntu package
  database

only available in the konqueror package, and in the kdebase-dbg (only
in PATH from the Konqueror package).

Neither of these two packages is a natural requirement for basic xdg-
open functionality under a KDE-environment. Currently, unless the user
has Konqueror installed, xdg-open falls back to open_generic
  sidestepping any KDE-configs.

However, KDE does have a similar utility, kde-open, which does the
same thing as xdg-open, and should be used instead of kfmclient.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772365] Re: gnome-shell + chrome doing nothing consumes high CPU all the time

2018-08-31 Thread Francesco Pretto
I think what reported by Lorens may be totally unrelated to the use of
Chrome. The use of VirtualBox, latest version 5.2.18, with a Ubuntu
18.04 64bit guest with 3D acceleration **enabled** and maximum VRAM
configured (128MB) is completely unusable because of extremely high
memory usage of gnome-shell, independently of the application launched:
you can launch nothing or launch firefox, for example, and the session
will become unusable pretty soon. It may be worth some more
investigation of VirtualBox+3D acceleration use case. My host is
actually Windows 10 64bit.

This is somewhat similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

After a few cycles of suspend, working with external monitor, running
Chrome with 10+ opened tabs causes gnome-shell and chrome to use 60%
of CPU just idling. When I do some more active work - it consumes even
more. My laptop is hot all the time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1699844] Re: Onboard settings and scanning problem

2017-06-23 Thread Francesco Fumanti
You did probably install Onboard from our Stable PPA, which does not include
the fix yet. Could you please try the Onboard version from our Snapshots PPA,
which includes the fixes marmuta cited above?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1672465] Re: Onboard doesn't work in Wayland

2017-07-04 Thread Francesco Fumanti
Hi Sebastien,

First of all, thanks for you appreciating our team and we also hope to
continue the cooperation with you.

As Onboard has more features than Caribou, there already has been some demand
for its integration into GNOME and people have also done some work on it; for
example:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/33065735/replacing-gnomes-virtual-keyboard-with-onboard-hide-show-via-dbus-doesnt-wor

In the meantime, Onboard is shipping an own extension for its integration into
GNOME shell.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/amd64/gnome-shell-extension-onboard
https://bugs.launchpad.net/onboard/+bug/1538627

The release for zesty does not fully support GNOME shell yet, but since
Ubuntu has decided to switch to GNOME Shell and Wayland, these two items
have become high priority for us and marmuta is currently actively
working on the port. He told me that he made some progress, but he is
better placed than me to give you details on it, so I leave it up to
him.

As far as I know, Lightdm is also being replaced by GDM, which will also
be relevant for Onboard...

Thanks again for contacting us.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1035590] Re: Kernel update on 10 Aug 2012 affects nm-applet signal strength

2012-10-13 Thread Francesco Cortassa Gozzi
I confirm that also after last kernel update (3.2.0-32-generic) the nm-applet
indicator still shows zero signal and my AP doesn't appead as connected. Just
wanted to remark that everythink is ok with 3.4 kernel (3.4.0-030400-generic).

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Impacts all users of ipw2x00-based hardware, for the ipw2200 and ipw2100
drivers: this is fairly common Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless hardware present
in at least quite a few Thinkpad laptops.

  [Test Case]
On a system with an Intel PRO/Wireless card:
  1) Click the network indicator/applet.
  2) Observe the detected signal level.
  3) Try to connect to a secured wireless network.

Connection should be successful and ask for the wifi network password
  (if it's not already entered)

  Alternatively:
  1) Run the command 'nmcli dev wifi'.

Signal level should be low (usually visible as simply '0').

  [Regression Potential]
This change will modify the detection behavior for the wireless framework to
use for wireless cards. It needs to be properly tested with the affected
devices to make sure the signal level and encryption capabilities are properly
detected; but should also be tested with other devices to make sure signal
levels and encryption capabilities remain properly detected. A possible
regression scenario would be if a device that works with nl80211 (without the
patch) would get detected as needing wext when it is not implemented. This
would likely cause such a device to not be able to see wireless networks and
connect to them.

With 3.2.0-29-generic the nm-applet no longer reports the wireless
signal strength. If I reboot into 3.2.0-27-generic this problem does
  not occur.

I am using a Toshiba Equium M70-339 laptop, and my wireless card is
listed on the manufacturer's webpage as being an Intel® PRO/Wireless
2200 LAN Mini PCI adaptor integrated in Intel® Centrino™ mobile
technology. I've purged and reinstalled network-manager to no effect.
The only way for me to get the signal strength reported by the nm-
applet is to use an earlier kernel. iwconfig reports the correct
  signal quality.
