Totem does not use the va-api gstreamer backend

Status in Totem Movie Player:

Status in “gstreamer-vaapi” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “totem” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
installing gstreamer -vaapi from ubuntu repos breaks thumbnail generation in
nautilus
furthermore acceleration does not work in totem - cpu usage is as high as
with software rendering.

mplayer-vaapi works perfectly on the same system.

  gst-launch-0.10 -v filesrc location=~/test.mkv ! matroskademux ! vaapidecode
! vaapisink
makes it possible to use vaapi via commandline

i did not find a way to use vaapi for mpeg4 part 2 video streams.

and i wasnt able to find proper values for gstreamer-properties that
fix thumbnails and acceleration in totem.

id like to share debug information. just tell me what you need.

Bug description:

Forgive long explanation below detailing, as well as the range of the
problem, some experiments to isolate the problem.
  Windows peer-to-peer network with
  (a) about twenty Windows 2000 and 98 machines
  (b) one Ubuntu machine running Samba server for student purposes (smb.conf
Workgroup = Students, Dapper LTS Server)
  (c) one LTSP network with three terminals running Samba server for staff
purposes (smb.conf set to make Staff the workgroup) (Intrepid, latest patches
as of 13/1/09)
  (d) one standalone Ubuntu Intrepid machine (smb.conf Workgroup = Staff,
Intrepid, latest patches as of 13/1/09)
  (e) two Ubuntu machines running from the live CD for test purposes. (No
workgroup set)

It's a school. There are two workgroups: Staff and Students.

Windows (Staff) machines (a) always show the presence of the other machines
on their (Staff) workgroup.
Nautilus on (b) to (e) intermittently displays the Windows machines on the
Staff workgroup.
When Nautilus works, Places, Network on machines (c) and (d) displays the
machines on the Staff workgroup, and also the Windows Network icon, through
which you can find the Student workgroup. On machines (e), where no workgroup
is set, one has to go through the Windows Network icon to the Staff network.
When Nautilus doesn't work, only the Windows Network icon is visible.
Clicking that makes the other Windows networks visible, but no shares on the
Staff workgroup are visible. But (b) on the Student network, is always visible.

BUT, Smb4K is installed on (c) and (d), and even when Nautilus is off,
using Smb4K, one can seek, browse, connect to other machines on the
  Staff network.

The two machines (d) using live CD's are there for test purposes. They
observe the same behaviour with Intrepid, Hardy, Gutsy live CDs.

  Possibly associated bugs:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/215570
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/73591

  Thoughts:

  i) I did not observe this behaviour when using Gutsy, so thought it
was a post-Gutsy problems. But now it is clearly evident in Gutsy.
That makes me think that the problem may have arisen not through a
change in Ubuntu, but from a change in the Windows network. I did
wonder if this was a consequence of a Windows 2000 security update,
possible affecting the Windows browser service.

ii) I noticed that that attempting to browse the Staff workgroup via
Places, Network, Windows Network, Staff results in an extremely rapid
return of '0 items', whereas when browsing the other default (empty)
workgroups (WORKGROUP, MSHOME) it takes about six seconds before '0
items' is displayed. This means that there is something on the network
that is rapidly telling Nautilus that there is nothing there.

Today my rhythmbox was upgraded to 0.9.8 by feisty beta. Now when I
play my queue, it doesn't matter if "shuffle" is pressed or not - the
songs are played in the order they stand there. Pressing shuffle also
doesn't change the order. When I delete all songs from the queue and
play the library on shuffle that works fine. Before the upgrade I
  didn't have the problem.

To be precise, it was upgraded to 0.9.8-0ubuntu3. I don't know which version

Title:
samba browsing doesn't adapt dynamically to network changes

Status in GVFS:
  New
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gvfs-backends

Very similar to Bug #191547 (most of this description is copied from
there). But this time it is about hardy and gvfs.

Samba browsing works like a charm after login. gvfs sees all samba
  workgroups and servers:

  $ gvfs-ls smb:///
  E-WARE
  MUNKACSOPORT
  VIRTUAL

But after switching between wired and wireless networks, gvfs no
longer sees any samba workgroups or shares.

  $ gvfs-ls smb:///
  [no output]

After some digging with wireshark, I noticed that the problem is that gvfs
sends the NMB name lookup requests to the wrong broadcast address.
  For example:
  1. Let the wired network be: 192.168.5.0/24 (broadcast 192.168.5.255)
  2. Let the wireless network be: 192.168.6.0/24 (broadcast 192.168.6.255)
Let's suppose that the wired connection was active when I started my gnome
session. Then after switching to the wireless connection gvfs still keeps
sending NMB name lookup queries to 192.168.5.255 which is WRONG.

  Workaround:
  $ killall gvfsd-smb-browse

Putting the above line in some if-up/if-down script makes the problem
  go away.

  $ dpkg -l | grep gvfs| cat
  ii gvfs 0.2.3-0ubuntu4
userspace virtual filesystem - server
  ii gvfs-backends 0.2.3-0ubuntu4
userspace virtual filesystem - backends
  ii gvfs-bin 0.2.3-0ubuntu4
userspace virtual filesystem - binaries
  ii gvfs-fuse 0.2.3-0ubuntu4

  ii libgvfscommon0 0.2.3-0ubuntu4

Bug description:
syndaemon is polling at 5Hz even on an idle system. It is waking up
  the CPU and wasting power.

However, it is running with -R option that should enable it to use
XRecord which avoids polling, so I believe gnome-settings-daemon is
doing the right thing. This used to work, I believe it was fixed for
natty (see bug #633125), so it is a regressed on Oneric and it is also
broken in Precise (I checked against today's daily build).

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After playing sound for a few minutes, the sound card freezes and only
a loud beeping tone comes out. The logs are filled with these
  messages:

At this point, reloading Alsa modules doesn't help and the only way to
get sound back is to unplug the device and reconnect it. There are
  similar reports here:

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/166340/playback-problem-sound-blaster-x-fi-hd

This does not appear to be related to Pulseaudio, as suggested in one
of the other reports. The problem is reproducible even with Pulseaudio
uninstalled. Playing sound from multiple sources appears to trigger
  the problem faster.

Title:
main menu on top bar doesn't appear

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When opening a file with LibreOffice, e.g. text file, in Ubuntu 12.10, quite
often the main menu on the top bar doesn't appear at the right sight of the
symbols for closing, minimizing and maximizing the active window. Thus it is
impossible to manage the file, for instance to save it with another name, to
insert, format etc...
Sometimes the menu appears after a period of time, sometimes it seems to
never appear. The only thing one can do is to close and re-open until the menu
finally appears. This problem occurred only after having upgraded from 12.04 to
12.10, not before.
The problem is shown in the screenshot I attach to this report. One has to
look at the bar where pointer is situated. Normally a menu list has to appear

  Fix Released

Bug description:
I've noticed that nm-applet is polling at ~10Hz. This seems to occur
only when I am only connected to the network (ethernet or wireless).
A strace of nm-applet is as follows:

  recvfrom(3, 0x101e304, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN},
{fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 6, 100) =
0 (Timeout)
  read(4, 0x7fff27127870, 16) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  recvfrom(3, 0x101e304, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN},
{fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 6, 0) = 0
(Timeout)
  read(4, 0x7fff27127870, 16) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  recvfrom(3, 0x101e304, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN},
{fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 6, 100) =
0 (Timeout)
  read(4, 0x7fff27127870, 16) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  recvfrom(3, 0x101e304, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN},
{fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 6, 0) = 0
(Timeout)

So it seems we have a poll using 100 millisecond timeout and also a 0
millisecond timeout. The 0 millisecond timeout is basically a busy
poll which seems a little excessive. The 100 millisecond timeout is
the root cause of the 10Hz events/second wakeup.

This is causing excessive wakeups which keeps the CPU out of deep C
sleep states and hence reduces battery life. Can this be fixed?

In previous versions, the "Name:", "Location:", etc. fields would
expand to fit the window width.

Now, they are always truncated to about 50% of the dialog's default

This is a horrible usability problem and makes the Search (Ctrl-F)

Public bug reported:

open file properties of a file.
full file path is not shown
"/home/julius/Deskto..."
i expect the full filepath to be shown like in gnome 2.3.
nautilus does not show full file location if the path isnt ultra short.

the bug is fixed upstream but not in oneiric.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657733
"This has been fixed in 3.3 with the migration from GtkTable to GtkGrid for the
properties dialog."

i dont know wheter gtk 3.4 or just a new nautilus version is needed. but
at least its rly an important feauture to know where your files are.
