[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1001221] Re: 12.04 black screen with blinking cursor when switching users

2014-02-22 Thread taj
Problem still exists in 13.10 64-bit
lightdm version 1.8.4.0ubuntu1

Only restart of LightDM (sudo service lightdm restart) from a terminal
(with Alt-F1) resolves the problem, but it also kills the running
session.

Because this is such a long standing and basic bug (mind you: one only
has to click the logged in user name and Switch User to run into it) I
agree with J.C. Blouin that the importance should be higher.

Title:
12.04 black screen with blinking cursor when switching users

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When switching users on 12.04 it will sometimes just go to a black
screen with a cursor. The user switching to is not logged in yet.

  Expected behavior:
Click current user up top from the drop-down click the user wanting to log
in brought to the lightdm log in screen and log that user in

  Instead:
Click current user up top from the dropdown click the user wanting to log in
brought to a black screen with a blinking cursor

From here, you cannot type or initiate any keyboard shortcuts other
than Ctrl +Alt+F(1-6) to reach tty1 etc, or Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to
the user that you were originally trying to switch from. Ctrl+Alt+F8
will bring you back to the black screen.

This happens pretty often so I should be able to test anything needed.
  Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1001221] Re: 12.04 black screen with blinking cursor when switching users

2014-02-22 Thread taj
I have an ubuntu install on an external drive and with the same drive on
another laptop the bug does not occur.
I.e. the bug is related to the hardware.
I get the blinking cursor bug on HP Probook 6470b
I can switch users without problems on HP Compaq NC6320

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1190485] Re: libreoffice crash to zombie when saving to samba

I cannot confirm fixes :( Sorry.

libreoffice crash to zombie when saving to samba

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
== NB edit: this is for package libreoffice-core, not xserver-xorg-
video-intel. I thought that I filed the report against that
  libreoffice-core. I cannot move it. ==

Reproduce: open a file via thunar from a samba drive, change it and save it.
Reproduced in writer an calc, other libreoffice programs not tested.
This happens in libreoffice-core 4.0.2 (official ubuntu release) and 4.0.3
(ppa )
Libreoffice stops resonding. The process does not stop when command is given
to end the process.
The network drive is mounted via gvfs.
This problem was reported to be solved in 4.0.2-RC2

Still open after ending the process:
  soffice.bin
  oosplash

oosplash can be killed. killing the soffice.bin process ends up with zombie.
Then only logout helps (fortunately reboot is not needed).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-07-08 Thread taj
Bug exists with Thunar in 13.04 64-bit up-to-date Xubuntu.
The bug likely also crashes libreoffice (3.x and 4.x) when it wants to save a
file that you opened on the samba share. Workaround for that: save on the local
drive and copy to the share afterwards. That may not work, but at least you'll
have your document.

NB mount workaround will be a problem if you do not have root
privileges. Then try FTP, or if you have dual boot save to a place where
Windows can access your data. Then reboot and use Windows to copy to the
shared drive.

Title:
nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

Status in GVFS:
  Confirmed
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Problem
  ===
Copying files to and from samba shares (this includes Windows shares) is
unreliable in Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.04 when using nautilus' integrated
samba client (gvfs-smb): The copy randomly hangs after a few files or a few GB.

  Workaround
  ==
Until gvfs-smb is fixed, use the kernel samba client (cifs) that works
reliably, is faster, but needs some terminal commands to get going:
  # sudo -s
  # mkdir /mnt/cifs
  # mount -t cifs -o user=YOUR_SAMBA_USER -o uid=YOUR_LINUX_USER
//SAMBA_SERVER/SAMBA_SHARE /mnt/cifs
It will ask for you password, you can then access the shared files at
/mnt/cifs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1190485] [NEW] libreoffice crash to zombie when saving to samba

2013-06-13 Thread taj
Public bug reported:

Reproduce: open a file via thunar from a samba drive, change it and save it.
Reproduced in writer an calc, other libreoffice programs not tested.
This happens in libreoffice-core 4.0.2 (official ubuntu release) and 4.0.3 (ppa
)
Libreoffice stops resonding. The process does not stop when command is given to
end the process.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1070963] Re: libreoffice calc hangs when opening an xls file shared over cifs

2013-06-03 Thread taj
Issue is in 13.04
Killing cannot be done from within the window manager (Xubuntu).
Logging out, opening a terminal screen (ctrl-alt-F1) enables me to kill the
process.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1035590] Re: Kernel update on 10 Aug 2012 affects nm-applet signal strength

2012-12-23 Thread taj
In contrast with OrangeCrate the problem still exists for me, running
3.2.0-35-generic.
To check I booted into 3.2.0-27-generic where signal strength is displayed
correctly.
So, the bug is not fixed in the main kernel releases, yet.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Impacts all users of ipw2x00-based hardware, for the ipw2200 and ipw2100
drivers: this is fairly common Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless hardware present
in at least quite a few Thinkpad laptops.

  [Test Case]
On a system with an Intel PRO/Wireless card:
  1) Click the network indicator/applet.
  2) Observe the detected signal level.
  3) Try to connect to a secured wireless network.

Connection should be successful and ask for the wifi network password
  (if it's not already entered)

  Alternatively:
  1) Run the command 'nmcli dev wifi'.

Signal level should be low (usually visible as simply '0').

  [Regression Potential]
This change will modify the detection behavior for the wireless framework to
use for wireless cards. It needs to be properly tested with the affected
devices to make sure the signal level and encryption capabilities are properly
detected; but should also be tested with other devices to make sure signal
levels and encryption capabilities remain properly detected. A possible
regression scenario would be if a device that works with nl80211 (without the
patch) would get detected as needing wext when it is not implemented. This
would likely cause such a device to not be able to see wireless networks and
connect to them.

With 3.2.0-29-generic the nm-applet no longer reports the wireless
signal strength. If I reboot into 3.2.0-27-generic this problem does
  not occur.

I am using a Toshiba Equium M70-339 laptop, and my wireless card is
listed on the manufacturer's webpage as being an Intel® PRO/Wireless
2200 LAN Mini PCI adaptor integrated in Intel® Centrino™ mobile
technology. I've purged and reinstalled network-manager to no effect.
The only way for me to get the signal strength reported by the nm-
applet is to use an earlier kernel. iwconfig reports the correct
  signal quality.

I expect nm-applet to display the signal strength of my WPA2 wireless
AP, but instead no signal is reported. This behaviour is only observed
  with the newest kernel.
