[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1615734] Re: Multiple monitors broken

2016-12-23 Thread thijs van severen
same here :

my setup :

- Nvidia Driver (nvidia-smi) : 367.57
- Lenovo P50 vid cards (lspci | grep VGA)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake Integrated
Graphics (rev 06)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107GLM [Quadro
M1000M] (rev a2)
- bios version (sudo dmidecode --type 0 --type 13) : N1EET52W (1.26 )
- kernel version (uname -a) : Linux ThinkPad-P50 4.6.7-040607-generic
#201608160432 SMP Tue Aug 16 08:35:05 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
- display manager (lightdm -v) : lightdm 1.18.3
- unity version (unity --version) : unity 7.4.0

When i'm running unity it does not work

i installed XFCE4 since a lot of people seem to report that this is the
fix and ... tadaaa ... it works

not sure what display manager XFCE uses, but it sure looks like lightdm or
unity is what is causing these issues
i'm ok with xfce, but i have grown to like unity so i really, really hope this
gets fixed asap :-(

Title:
  Multiple monitors broken

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-361 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have a Lenovo P50 with Nvidia Optimus (Quadro M1000M), installed with
Ubuntu 16.04 and the recommended Nvidia drivers (361.42).
I added two external monitors connected to DP sockets in the docking station.
I would like to have display shift to those two monitors when the laptop is
docked. One monitor has native resolution of 1680x1050 and the other is
1920x1080. The laptop native resolution is 1920x1080.

  Expected result:
laptop monitor shut off, two external monitors running in native resolution,
display shared on both monitors (not mirrored).

  Process:
I configured the display using the "Displays" applet in the unity control
center. However, pressing "Apply" when changing a specific display setting
(such as resolution, location of screen relative to others, turning on/off),
results in a long period of darkness, usually followed by display falling back
to mirroring of all 3 monitors, using a similar-size screen (either low on all
or high on all with the low-res monitor using panning). The applet remains
frozen for some time, with the dialog "Is the display ok" open but
unresponsive. Later I realized this is because there is another dialog of
"Cannot set screen CRTCXXX" hidden under the two above windows, which needs to
by ok-ed first.

  Extra:
I also tried setting the display manually with 'xrandr', which lead to a
similar result as above - with the "cannot set screen" dialog, and falling back
to mirroring. This convinced me that the problem is probably with the nvidia
driver and not the higher plumbing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1503310] Re: window content doesn't refresh, only if window is moved

2016-04-18 Thread thijs van severen
nvidia claims that this is is known issue with the window manager :

"this is a duplicate of another Launchpad bug, and as I understand it, it’s a
bug with Compiz and Mutter (the compositing managers of Unity and GNOME,
respectively), see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/269904.

I believe it’s largely been fixed in Compiz, but that patch likely did not
propagate to Ubuntu 12.04. I believe it’s in all Ubuntu versions >= 15.04, and
probably is fixed in 14.04 as well (though not 14.10)."

so i'm afraid the only option is to upgrade to 15.04 (or maybe better 16.04)
...

guess this ticket can be closed ?

Title:
window content doesn't refresh, only if window is moved

Status in compiz package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I suppose this is a bug with the nvidia driver, but I'm not sure.
After the second-to-last routine software update (which I think
updated the nvidia driver), changing window content is only refreshed
  if the window is moved.

  Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, kernel 3.2.0-91-generic,
  NVidia driver installed: 340.93-0ubuntu0.0.0.1,
Thinkpad laptop with nvidia graphics card (see below),
  Window manager: Gnome Classic

How to reproduce the bug: Log in under Gnome Classic. Open Gnome
terminal. Execute some command (ls). Open new tab in terminal. Execute
some other command (ps), just to have different tab contents. Switch
back and forth between the tabs using the mouse. After some switches,
neither the tab rider is activated nor the tab content is refreshed
any longer. Only if you move the window, the tab rider gets activated
and the tab content is refreshed. The same problem occurs in other
applications (e.g. in thunderbird when selecting an email --- email
list entry is not marked and email content is not shown, only if you
move the window), so it is not application-specific.

The bug disappears when using the window manager "Gnome Classic (no
effects)" instead (which is "non-compositing" in contrast to "Gnome
Classic"). The bug is also present in other window magagers
  ("Ubuntu").

Side remark: I tried but failed to switch back to an earlier version
of the nvidia driver (from 340 to 331) using synaptic: When
deinstalling 340 and installing 331 instead, synaptic complains that
it depends on 340. So I can only guess that the bug is caused by the
  nvidia driver.

Any help would be highly appreciated as the bug is really annoying.

yep, setting Pidging audio method to ALSA is a reliable workaround for
this problem

could it be that the Auto methode defaults to OSS ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 406414] Re: pidgins appears multiple times in applications tab of sounds preferences

2012-06-29 Thread thijs van severen
running 10.4, pidgin 2.6.6 (audio method set to Auto)

whenever i watch a youtube video (in chrome) and pidgin generates a sound
during that movie i dont hear the pidgin sound until after i close the youtube
movie (or better, close the chrome tab the video was playing in)
once i close the youtube tab it seems that all the pidgin sounds get played all
at the same time (like they have been queued but had to wait for the youtube
video to stop first)

when i open the sound preference - application tab (while i am watching
the youtube vid) i can see the number of instances of pidgin increasing
(probably with every sound pidgin generates)

this issue also frequently mutes the sound of a video when i start it (it does
not mute the sound once the vid is playing)
to fix this i need to rewind the vid a couple of times and then the video
starts with sound

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 962033] [NEW] cant copy files to samba share if file contains more than 1 ':'

2012-03-22 Thread thijs van severen
Public bug reported:

if i copy a file from my local HD to a samba share i get

There was an error copying the file into
smb://cisco.com;tvanseve@bnbeluifps01/public/labo/ProjDoc/Newproj/DCM/DCM_Toplevel/03_Test%20programs/SVT/Release_10_1/Test%20Results/2000%20streams.

detail : Invalid argument

after some testing i found that this has to do with the file name. If the
filename contains more than 1 ':' i get this message. only 1 ':' seems to be
ok.

this is probably not nautilus specific issue (rater samba or samba
client i guess?) but this is how i first encountered it

at first it seemed to be retated to Bug #393012, but i guess that's a
different story

On every boot, after entering my password to log in, I get a message
  window saying:

The window is titled: A program is still running:

Power Manager not responding with three buttons, Lock Screen,
  Cancel, Logout anyway.

If I click Cancel the screen locks, and the only thing I can do is
restart, by clicking on the power button in the lower right corner.
If I click Logout anyway, it continues to logon. If I do nothing
the log on continues within a few seconds.

It appears to only happen after boot. If I logout and log back in, it
  does not occur.

Let me know if there are any logs that will help?

Edit: It only happens on original boot. It does not happen on
logout/login, or on a restart, only on a complete shutdown/restart.
