[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1981148] [NEW] saving dialog focus skips to search bar

2022-07-10 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

I'm still wondering why my Ubuntu forces the snap version of Firefox
onto me, despite apt-pinning, but OK, I guess being frustrated about
that would be a lost cause.

In any case:
The snap version of Firefox that my Ubuntu has decided to install despite my
apt-pinning has a bug in the saving dialog.

I've recorded a video and left it online, here:
https://anonfiles.com/X4ec15w7y3/simplescreenrecorder-2022-07-10_15.57.54_mkv

Following protocol:

1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Release:22.04

2) $ apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installed: 1:1snap1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:1snap1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:1snap1-0ubuntu2 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 102.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 999

bionic/main amd64 Packages
500 https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu
bionic/main amd64 Packages

(note how Ubuntu doesn't give a damn about the pin priority, but
whatever)

3) I'm trying to save a downloaded document.
 3.1) Firefox opens the save dialogue.
 3.2) I would like to enter a filename into the filename bar

4) following 3.1:
 4.2) When I try to change the filename, the focus immediately jumps to the
search bar and the dialogue for some reason tries to search for the entered
letters on the drive. I can click back to focus on the filename bar, sometimes
I can manage to type one or two letters, before the focus jumps, again.

This does not happen with the version I installed using apt, but which
repeatedly gets removed by the Ubuntu updating process, to install the
snap version, which sadly never seems to work without problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1927347] [NEW] Cannot reply to PGP-encrypted email despite OpenPGP being configured for account - thunderbird claims missing signing certificate

2021-05-07 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 21.04

500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hirsute/main amd64 Packages

Situation:
Both PGP and S/MIME configured for an account, all credentials up to date and
configured for the identity of the account. The chosen OpenPGP key has both a
sign/certify primary key, and an encryption subkey.

What I expect to happen:
When receiving an email encrypted with PGP/GPG I expect to be able to respond,
encrypted with OpenPGP.

What happens:
I can decrypt the email, I can hit respond, but then receive the error:

"You specified that this message should be digitally signed, but the
application either failed to find the signing certificate specified in
your Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings, or the certificate has expired."

The "Options" -> "Encryption Technology" is set to S/MIME and choosing
OpenPGP is not possible (grey).

I'm surprised first, that I cannot choose OpenPGP (since the original
sender does not have an S/MIME certificate and using OpenPGP is the only
option to communicate securely in this case), and that apparently the
*signing certificate* was missing.

I searched the web a bit, some people suggested to reconfigure the key
chosen with the account, but this does not change anything in my case.

Sending the same person an email and encrypting it with OpenPGP works
like a charm, it only fails when I reply to their emails.

and creating a userChrome.css as follows:

#folderTree > treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text {

+1 we're willing to pledge €500 (upon invoice) if either snap is
repaired or standard packages managed through a system that isn't broken
(dpkg/apt).

  [snap] Cannot run chromium as user www-data because home directory is

Status in snapd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Since the move to snap, and upgrade to 19.10, I can no longer use
  headless-chromium to do automated conversions.

  The script, as currently run by Apache (user www-data) as a back-end
  server process is:

  /usr/bin/timeout 60 chromium-browser --no-sandbox --headless
  --disable-gpu --window-size=2048,1448 --screenshot='dummy.pdf'
  'http://localhost/[...]' 2>&1 2>&1

  This returns error 1, with:

  dconf-CRITICAL **: 19:41:17.958: unable to create directory
  '/var/www/.cache/dconf': Permission denied. dconf will not work
  properly.

  WARNING: cannot create user data directory: cannot create
"/var/www/snap/chromium/899":
  mkdir /var/www/snap: permission denied
  Sorry, home directories outside of /home are not currently supported.
  See https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/11209 for details.

  So... how are we supposed to use scripted Chrome for headless work, when the
snaps don't support it?
  This is a major blocker for me, as it completely destroys my ability to do
any development work, because the build-toolchain for selftests relies on the
ability of chrome to operate headless.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849729] Re: chromium-browser fails to start after upgrade to eoan

2019-11-06 Thread ts
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1849371 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1849371

Thanks Olivier,

I could imagine that you'll get several other bug reports where people
do not see how the underlying problem relates to "Cannot run chromium as
user www-data because home directory is /var/www" - but I guess the
issue is the same.

Btw, I've been using Linux for over 25 years and I don't understand the
quote you mention and why snapd would be chosen to manage standard
packages, if it (apparently) is broken (at least somebody is working on
a fix, according to "Zygmunt's quote", mentioning "_for now_ has no
workaround"). Home directories commonly are mounted (at least in
professional environments) and quite commonly linked into /home/, and
there never has been any problem with this, to the contrary, it solves
many a headache (until now, as it seems). Feel free to send me back to
old-fart-country where I came from, I'm just bothered by update-routines
that break (standard!) environments.

If snap is broken and cannot deal with standard setups (this much I
understand from the other bug and what I find in relation to "Zygmunt's
quote"), may be it should be fixed before being included in the handling
of standard packages?

OTOH, may be Ubuntu doesn't target professional environments. The
solution of course is fine if the target audience are people who setup
every new laptop from scratch and never work in networked environments
(*scnr*).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849729] [NEW] chromium-browser fails to start after upgrade to eoan

2019-10-24 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

did a distro upgrade to eoan through upon request of popup app in ubuntu
today

restarted the system

tried starting chromium-browser from the "Run Application" (Alt-F2)

Chromium should have started, nothing happened.

Tried again from a shell:

$ chromium-browser
2019/10/24 22:07:56.441694 cmd_run.go:529: WARNING: XAUTHORITY environment
value is not a clean path: "/misc/home//.Xauthority"
cannot perform operation: mount --rbind /home /tmp/snap.rootfs_gRwtXn//home:
Permission denied

apt-get --purge remove chromium-browser
apt-get install chromium-browser

exits successfully, after exclaiming some stuff about some snap, but
leaves me with

$ chromium-browser
2019/10/24 22:14:53.150401 cmd_run.go:529: WARNING: XAUTHORITY environment
value is not a clean path: "/misc/home//.Xauthority"
cannot perform operation: mount --rbind /home /tmp/snap.rootfs_rkOYc1//home:
Permission denied

Either the upgrade to eoan left my system broken, or chromium-browser is broken.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2019-07-17 Thread ts
So mate used to be great but doesn't seem to be a solution anymore
either, type-ahead-find seemingly has been replaced for search-as-you-
type in mate sometimes this summer as well, too.

+1 for replacement, it could at least be a configuration option

  GNOME removed type-ahead find in Nautilus 3.6, not without

  Now when you type in a Nautilus window, Nautilus immediately performs
  a search in the current directory and all its subdirectories. I
  personally find this annoying. If I want to search, I'll click the
  search icon. Often I'm looking at a long directory listing and simply
  want to jump to a certain point in it, and type-ahead find works great
  for that.

  Would Ubuntu consider patching type-ahead find back in?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1835650] Re: firefox fails to open private sessions from bash

2019-07-17 Thread ts
Sorry for the delay.

I see what you mean, it seems true that firefox (suddenly?) adheres to
the documentation (and hasn't done so in the past?).

So in future we have to keep in mind that
$firefox -private
does not open a private window (anymore!) if another instance of firefox is
already running, and that
$firefox -private URL
does not open said URL in a private window (anymore!) (which it did for a long
time and until the recent past, and which seems much more sensible).
Counterintuitive and probably misleading, but once learned it's possible to
accept, I guess...

Thanks for the headsup!

Fwiw, I don't see how this would be a support request or spam ("changed

not performing as advertised, to me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1835650] Re: firefox fails to open private sessions from bash

2019-07-08 Thread ts
Thanks Olivier, for the additional reference to the documentation.

This, however, is not the described problem.

The observed bug is that calling firefox from bash with the option
"-private" does open firefox, but not in private mode.

Thanks for your understanding.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1835650] [NEW] firefox fails to open private sessions from bash

2019-07-07 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

running

% firefox -private URL
or
% firefox -private-toggle URL

from a cli used to start firefox in private mode. This does not work (in
my setup) anymore.

[ctrl]-[shift]-p and "new private window" from the file menu also does
not always open private windows, anymore.

I'm wondering if this is a security bug (it clearly is a privacy bug)..

1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 19.04
Release:19.04

2)
$ apt-cache policy firefox

3) What I expect to happen
Opening a private window from the command line typing
firefox -private URL
should open the URL in a private window

4) What happens instead
Upon the given command firefox opens the URL, but not in a private window and
leaves the URL in the history of the browser.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1095498] Re: Printing PDFs with images is hideously slow on HP LaserJet 3030 MFP

2018-08-14 Thread Brother error ts-02
I am having the similar slow printing problem with a brother printer on
14.04 LTS Desktop 64-bit. A 180-pages print job with some colored
screenshots (Samsung TV manual) needs 2-3 hours on Ubuntu but only 13
minutes on Windows 10. Now I am having brother error ts-02.

Title:
  Printing PDFs with images is hideously slow on HP LaserJet 3030 MFP

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Printing anything with graphics from Firefix (such as a Google Maps
  page), or a PDF file containing graphics, takes a ridiculously long
  time to print, often several minutes per page. This is with a
  directly-attached USB postscript printer (an HP 3030 mfp).

  The exact same content prints in only 2 seconds when printed from
  Windows 7 running in a VM, to the same printer via an independent
  print server (avoiding CUPS in the Ubuntu host).

  NOTE: If the page in Firefox is first printed "to file" and PDF is
  selected, the very long delay happens when printing the resulting PDF
  using the "lpr" command. If, instead, "print to file" is done from
  Firefox and Postscript is selected, the resulting .ps file prints much
  faster (still 10x slower than printing from Windows 7, but much faster
  than printing the equivalent PDF).

  So there must be something bogus in how CUPS handles PDF files
  containging images.

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Visit https://maps.google.com/ in Firefox on Ubuntu
  2. Search for "San Francisco" and click the print icon (in the left bar near
the top).
  3. A printable map is displayed; hit ^P to print it to a postscript printer
  (1-2 minute delay before the page prints)

  Do exactly the same on a Windows 7 system and printing starts in about
  2 seconds.

  Alternatively, try printing the attached PDF and PS files. The PDF is
  hideously slow (minutes), but the PS is only slow (about 10 seconds
  to print on my system).Compared to 2 seconds when printed from
  Windows.   All the same content.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1770762] [NEW] NetworkManager does not merge dhclient config correctly

2018-05-11 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

Adding a lease section to a dhclient config file does not work, the
closing bracket is not merged into the generated config file, leading to
a broken config file. Is this a bug?

More specific: Trying to add a static fallback IP in case DHCP does not work. I
added into /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf:
lease {
  interface "eno2";
  fixed-address 10.0.0.100;
  option subnet-mask 255.0.0.0;
  option routers 10.0.1.1;
  option domain-name-servers 10.0.1.1;
  renew 2 2025/1/12 00:00:01;
  rebind 2 2025/1/12 00:00:01;
  expire 2 2025/1/12 00:00:01;
}

In the resulting merged config file for the eno2-interface
/var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-eno2.conf, the closing "}" is missing,
so the file is broken. Running dhclient manually does work.

  I can successfully boot to the recovery console.
  In some of failed attempts i got "NMI deadlock detected on CPU0,1,3 in mkswap"
  I guess nvidia-384 has some issues and conflicts with updated microcode.
  I have to disable microcode update with

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1712044] [NEW] AppArmor profile misses entries

2017-08-21 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

If Chromium is started, a plethora of AppArmor notifications are shown
(apparmor-notify installed) and logged to syslog.

I would expect that these are included in the supplied AppArmor profile
and no notifications/log entries appear.

Example in syslog:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1712039] [NEW] AppArmor profile misses entry for /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/mimeinfo.cache

2017-08-21 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

The evince AppArmor profile seems to miss an entry for
/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/mimeinfo.cache.
If evince is launched, the following gets logged to syslog:

kernel: [81577.596186] audit: type=1400 audit(1503306090.062:2011):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="/usr/bin/evince"
name="/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/mimeinfo.cache" pid=32268
comm="evince" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=1000 ouid=0

I don't know if this should be allowed or denied. If you could add the
correct behaviour to the profile, that would be nice; otherwise, every
time evince is launched, a notification pops up (apparmor-notify
installed).

(Workaround:

Add to original profile (/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince):
  #include

Insert into local profile (/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.evince):
  /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/mimeinfo.cache r,
)

Release: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Package Version: evince-common 3.18.2-1ubuntu4.1

** Affects: evince (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1192956] [NEW] Ubuntu Printing defaults to mirrored printing

2013-06-20 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

ubuntu 13.04, cups installed, printer driver:
HP Color LaserJet CP3505 Postscript (recommended) (color, 2-sided printing)
Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided
in CUPS the mirror image is disabled.

yet: ever since one of the last system updates ubuntu printing defaults to
mirrored printing (which is really annoying, of course). Using the
gnome-control-center -> printers -> options it is impossible to switch off
"Mirror Image", it immediately is switched on again automatically, upon each
click.
Disabling it in the normal printing dialog is possible, and necessary, for each
print job (which, again, is really annoying).

Checked dconf-editor and configuration editor for "printing" or "mirror"
settings, but didn't find anything.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1192956] Re: Ubuntu Printing defaults to mirrored printing

2013-06-20 Thread ts
gksudo gnome-control-center shows the mirror image option to be turned
off, turning it on and off again as root does not change anything.
starting gnome-control-center in user mode still defaults to mirror
image and flips back to "on" on any attempt to switch it off.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1037446] [NEW] type-ahead search in global-app-menu->Bookmarks doesn't work

2012-08-16 Thread ts
Public bug reported:

Firefox used to offer accessing bookmarks from the bookmarks menu [alt-b]
directly using type-ahead search.
This feature seems to be broken in the global-app-menu integration

reproduce:
* install firefox
* add bookmarks
* hit [alt-b]
* hit any character

Firefox should directly jump to the bookmarks starting with the pressed
character, but it doesn't.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 369150]

2011-09-17 Thread Ts-phnxsoft
Problem still exists in Thunderbird 3.1.14 on openSUSE 11.4 64 bit
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.22) Gecko/20110907 SUSE/3.1.14
Thunderbird/3.1.14

Right-clicking the "From" field of a displayed mail with the "From"
header:

From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Dr=2E_J=F6rg_Schr=F6per=2C_LANline?=

results in a message composition window with two recipients:
"Dr. Jörg Schröper" and "LANline ".

(That's the sender address of a public newsletter so I think posting the
unsanitized address is ok.)

Title:
  Thunderbird splits email addresses with non-ascii characters and a
  comma in From: field

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  Fix Released
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  When I receive mail where the sender is of the form "Lastname,
  Firstname" and the last name contains Finnish umlaut letters ä and ö,
  the sender is parsed into simply Lastname.

  Example:

  Järvinen, Jukka  is shown as:

  Message window: "Järvinen" and "Jukka "
  Reply window: "Järvinen"
  Index: "Järvinen"
  Header: "From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?J=E4rvinen=2C_Jukka?= "

  Affected version: 2.0.0.21 (20090409)

  This happens when the mail is sent from Exchange. The only apparent
  difference in the From header sent from Thunderdird is that ISO-8850-1
  is written in upper case.
