this is not a bug per-se. Software gain  lose features all the time.
Default application selection questions can be raised on ubuntu
developer / desktop mailing lists.

Bug description:
  We have the chat button appearing in thunderbird since the end of
  July. We already have an IM app, empathy, I don't think we should
  showing another one.

  Anyway, all chat configuration and buttons should be hidden for
  quantal, I guess.

Thunderbird has replaced Evolution as the default e-mail client.  Might
it be worth considering using Thunderbird Chat as the default chat
client too, rather than hiding the button?
