Yes, it's still a problem (12.04LTS with updates as of Dec 19 '13). I don't know of any way to reliably/consistently reproduce it. I encounter it after 1-4 days of normal usage, which would be difficult to duplicate with a development release. Perhaps one of the other affected parties can try. If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . This is a serious regression. I never had any problem like this through all the releases of Ubuntu I've used. This has been a non-stop annoyance ever since upgrading to 12.04LTS. Another clue may be that this is a laptop, and I only see the problem when I'm docked with an external monitor setup (so I have two screens). I never see this problem without the external/dual screen. I have a desktop machine with only a single screen, but identical software setup, which stays up for weeks and never sees this problem. I see this same behavior without using nitrogen. I simply run a daemon that regenerates the image nautilus is pointing to as the desktop background periodically. After leaving it running overnight, I get the same "Maximum number of clients reached" error.
