[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

Well, you are running Gnome. The right click options are only moved to
the left click menu in Unity. That is the same in Precise.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

2012-10-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
According to the debug information on this bug report, nothing is wrong
-- wireless is indeed disabled in the menu:

Below Wireless and VPN; you should see an entry for Enable wireless
which is likely unchecked. Clicking on it should add a checkmark again,
and allow wireless to be used (it may take a second or two for the
networks to appear in the menu).

Are you saying that this doesn't last a reboot?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

2012-10-08 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately there is no Enable
wireless entry. The network menu is, in full:

Wired network (greyed out)
diconnected (greyed out)
Mobile Broadband (greyed out)
not enabled (greyed out; has a no signal icon beside it)
New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection...
thin divider
Wireless Networks (greyed out)
wireless is disabled (greyed out)
VPN Connections (has a submenu)

Only New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection... and VPN Connections
are enabled.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

2012-10-08 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Certainly; please see screenshot1.png attached.

Yes, the first thing I did was to double check that the hardware switch
was set to enabled. Also, as previously mentioned, the interface can be
configured without problems using command line tools, and all my
submissions to this ticket have been done over the wireless interface.

How does your /etc/network/interfaces look like?

And would you be able to test a daily live CD: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

Title:
  Can't enable wireless

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On booting and logging into Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2, under the network
menu, Wireless networks is shown in grey and cannot be selected.
Directly below it, also in grey, is wireless is disabled. This is a
regression, and it used to work correctly in 12.04. I'm able to
manually bring up the interface using:

  ifconfig wlan0 up
  iwlist wlan0 scanning

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

2012-10-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Marius, you're looking too far I think ;)

Alistair, please see if Enable wireless can be toggled -- it will show
up in the right-click menu for the applet, rather than the left-click
menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063497] Re: Can't enable wireless

2012-10-08 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Mathieu,

Thank you, I didn't realise that there was now a right click menu. There
is indeed an Enable wireless option there that works.

I suggest tweaking the UI to make this clear. There are going to be lots
of people like me upgrading from 12.04 who aren't going to be aware of
the right click menu.
