There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. I tried the issues reported here in version 3.0.1. When I click the play button Rhythmbox does start to play, but it starts maximized. This has been a problem for me for a long time, tagged as regression as Rhythmbox used to have an "Open to system tray" option in the menu.
