[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1159440] Re: Nautilus not showing status bar by default

2014-02-17 Thread Geraldo
I think I have found a replacement for Nautilus, it is called Nemo (!).

From its webpage (http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?p=198):
Nemo is a complete fork of Nautilus 3.4 and its goal is to extend the Cinnamon
user experience to desktop and file management.

It is included in Ubuntu's 13.10 default repositories. Install it with:

  sudo apt-get install nemo

It looks a lot like Nautilus, but has the missing goodies: status bar,
split screen and backspace key to go up (instead of Alt-up).

It seems Nautilus developers are trying to make it simpler, but IMHO
they are making it too simplistic. :-/ Nemo is already my default file
browser.

Nautilus not showing status bar by default

Bug description:
In 13.04, Nautilus is not showing the status bar on the bottom when
entering a folder with many items on it. It only shows the status bar
when I select the items in it, but not by default when I go inside a
folder. It should, like in the past, tell me how many items are shown
(Folder and files) and how much free space is left.

There is no option to activate this via gui either.

It a project bug then!

The status bar is a nice feature and very simple to program and
maintain. At the very least, why not leave it disabled by default and
give the user the option to enable it?

It was replaced by a floating status bar that annoyingly appears over
file names and never shows the device's free space.

Am with Geraldo on this one. Whoever took the decision really needs to
study more about decision making and user friendliness.

The bar missing goes in the bottom (there is no option in preferences).
Typically shows how many items (folders and files) are in the current
folder and how much disk space is left. It was there in 12.10 under the
View option in the menu (Status Bar).
