Bug description:
I installed Raring about a week ago on my main desktop - just before
it went live and last night was the first time I've rebooted since I
installed. Not sure what exactly the issue is that is causing the
lockup/performance issue but the symptoms are basically the
  following...

  Boot up - seems fine
Login - during the transition from the login screen to the actual
desktop/Unity shell there's a large pixelated image being displayed
Desktop action - opening/closing any window is just dead slow - so much so
that you can see the windows coming through the normal transitions from not
there to fully there in about 4-5 steps. Programs themselves operate normally
once open.
After about 5-30 minutes the screen just freezes. I switched to VT1 and I'm
getting a ton of messages stating...

[drm:radeon_cs_ib_chunk] *ERROR* Failed to schedule IB !

...just being spewed out on the console. Have to actually physically
power cycle the machine from this point. Not exactly sure what
component the issue is related to - could be compiz, xserver-xorg,
  etc. no idea.

I think this is related to bug 1100286.

I cannot leave the system in this state for very long as I need it for
work purposes. I have another system to fall back to in a pinch, but
its not ideal. If I don't hear back on this bug from someone by the
end of the day on Monday I'm going to try re-imaging the system and
see if that can at least get me some progress.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1174135] Re: Xorg freeze/performance problem

2013-04-30 Thread Jared Greenwald
So, I just did a fresh reinstall. When the system came up from the
install it was working excellently - snappy responses from nearly
everything. I proceeded to run a full update including all the repos in
the system settings dialogs (including partners proposed) and then
rebooted to the new software. Immediately when I came back up, I
noticed there were issues within the desktop. Specifically, the same
fade in/out transition issues and general slow-ness of any graphics
components. Again, once in an actual application, the applicaton seems
to run fine (this browser instance, for example) but the window
decorations and menus and such are all still quite laggy. The worst is
the unity menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1174135] Re: Xorg freeze/performance problem

2013-04-30 Thread Jared Greenwald
I just noticed something in the dmi output above. My bios is (was)
quite old. I just updated my bios and holy crap my system is screaming
fast now. Didn't change anything other than the bios and when the
system rebooted all of the desktop interactions were super fast. As
fast as a system with my hardware specs should be. So, I guess I'll
close that bug as user error?

There were no updates to any of those during the last week. You seem to
be running the same kernel too (-17), so I'm not sure what could cause
the issue.

  etc.

2013-04-29 Thread Jared Greenwald
I don't often reboot (maybe once a week or less) so it's possible that
this was caused by something that came out a while ago. I saw there was
an upstream fix referenced in the other bug that was supposedly released
on 4/25, but I have that installed and I'm still seeing the issue...

Title:
  Xorg freeze/performance problem

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  New
