Without logging back in, I checked the running processes and there were several user processes of graphical applications still running even though the user wasn't logged in anywhere. The root cause here is that the VT switch away from X fails [ioctl(xf86Info.consoleFd, VT_RELDISP, 1)] and the recovery mechanism of reacquiring DRM_MASTER also fails. I have no idea why.
