Bug description:
  I commented on this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1516531
and it was requested I start a new bug with detail.

For what it is worth, I have 15.10 installed on a Thinkpad X1 with an
Ivy Bridge processor (i5-3427U) and Intel HD 4000 graphics and I am
seeing very similar behavior. Full screen video from Chrome or games
  on Steam cause the freeze.

The freeze is usually when switching away from the video/game or when
using the volume keys which causes the onscreen popup to occur.

This is new in 15.10. It didn't have this problem when I first
upgraded to 15.10 (from 14.04) but seems like it started a couple
  weeks ago.

I seem the have fixed the problem with Chrome by going here: chrome://flags/
and picking "Override software rendering list" but when I start a game it
freezes instantly if I hit volume.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1550843] Re: Screen freeze when switching from full screen

2016-03-02 Thread Wayne Scott
My apologies. Real life is getting in the way of tracking this bug at
the moment.

The problems occurred to me personally on this laptop and it is my believe that
when I originally upgraded to 15.10 from 14.04
it was fine, but sometime later I started having problems with applications
that switched graphics modes to full screen. When switching back or when the
volume popups appeared it would freeze my X session. But the OS was still
running in the background.

My problem is that I am having troubles reproducing the problem reliably
at the moment and finding an open source game that reproduces the
problem. I had worked around the problems with videos in Chrome which
was my main problem. Anyway I need to allocate time in the next week to
sit down and work on this again.

Wayne Scott, did this problem not occur for you personally (not someone
else) in a release prior to 15.10?

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1550843] Re: Screen freeze when switching from full screen

2016-02-29 Thread Wayne Scott
No it is more like the video gets locked up.
The screen is frozen, but I can still use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a new
console and log it.
But I didn't have any luck killing things to free up the X server.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1550843] Re: Screen freeze when switching from full screen

2016-02-28 Thread Wayne Scott
I created a fresh 15.10 live CD and verified the problem there.
Then did an install of the Xenial daily live image and it shows the same
problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1550843] Re: Screen freeze when switching from full screen

2016-02-28 Thread Wayne Scott
Updating the BIOS on a laptop with no CD and no Windows is a PITA.
It took me an hour to get it right.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
G6ETB2WW (2.72 )
10/08/2015

This didn't change anything about this bug. It still does the same
thing.

Title:
Screen freeze when switching from full screen

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

This appeared in syslog about the same time:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1550843] Re: Screen freeze when switching from full screen

2016-02-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Wayne Scott, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

As per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-
netbooks/ThinkPad-X-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Type-
34xx?linkTrack=GPS:Body_Search%20Products&beta=false an update to your
computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (2.72). If
you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement
or not.
3) Please mark the report Status New.

If it's not reproducible, please mark the Status Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.
