  Also, I see this output in the terminal: '(unity-control-
  center:30149): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus:

  I reported it to i3 (https://github.com/i3/i3/issues/2430) but I was
  told it's unity-control-center issue.

unity-control-center is meant to be used under unity, does it work
better if you start it with XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity unity-control-
center?

update: adding sudo solved it - 'sudo unity-control-center'. I see all
the icons now. but I suspect it's not a good idea.

even with 'sudo' I see the following:
