[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) reached end-of-standard-support on May 31, 2023. I'm setting the status of this bug to 'Incomplete' as it's not seen any activity for some time. If this is still an issue when using a currently maintained release of Ubuntu then please let us know which one(s) otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767993 Title: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, I just installed a fresh 18.04 on an ASRock beebox N3150 machine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Still broken despite upgrading kernel to 4.15.0-46.49 grub to 2.02-2ubuntu8.12 mesa to 18.2.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.2 The recent mesa changelog gave hope:- "i965-revert-enabling-softpin.diff: Don't enable softpin, causes issues on 32bit installs. (LP: #1815172)" but no improvement noted and GPU still hanging at the login screen. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Hello, Very similar situation here with an ASRock N3150M motherboard. This board has DVI, HDMI and VGA ports, of which I'm using just the DVI. The Xubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver i386 DVD fails to bring up the window manager with a GPU hang. What works: nomodeset What doesn't: bootstring intel_iommu=off (a solution proposed elsewhere) When nomodeset is NOT used, nine times out of ten a single underscore character appears at the top left of the screen and the kernel is unresponsive (Alt-SysRq-h does nothing), however it is occasionally possible to get a mouse pointer on a blank screen and switch to console from there. I was able to retrieve /sys/class/drm/card0/error and will attach. Also some related info from logs, please see below. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Please be more polite. I committed more time to researching this bug report yesterday than any other. What the motherboard is capable of is at least relevant and you should be aware of it. While you are using the kernel parameter "nomodeset", the default X graphics driver ("modesetting") will be limited to 1024x768. That is not a bug. If you would like to get back to the older graphics driver that may work better for you (and may ignore the "nomodeset"), then you will need to force it to use the intel driver instead of modesetting: Section "Device" Identifier "devname" Driver "intel" EndSection in /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767993 Title: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, I just installed a fresh 18.04 on an ASRock beebox N3150 machine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Are you just here to keep me busy with useless conversation? As I said: - that machine with that monitor connected over display port was working well for more than a year with ubuntu 16.10, 17.04, 17.10, it just took the nomodeset - and it works well under 18.04 just for the login screen, trouble begins after login. So don't tell me what the hardware is capable of. The hardware was doing the job until last friday when I put a fresh 18.04 on that machine. The question is: What happens between the login screen's X11-Session and the user X11-Session. Why is the former working and the latter not. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767993 Title: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, I just installed a fresh 18.04 on an ASRock beebox N3150 machine. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
Resolution limits are almost always imposed by the motherboard/system manufacturer. Not the software or CPU/GPU manufacturer. In the case of your system there are some interesting notes: --- "*This DisplayPort only supports DP to D-Sub dongles. DP to HDMI dongles and DP to DVI dongles are not supported. To power up three monitors, please connect your monitors to 2 x HDMI and 1 x DP ports or 2 x HDMI and 1 x D-Sub ports via a DP to D-Sub dongle. HDMI 1 (4K/2K@30Hz) / HDMI 2 (4K/2K@30Hz) Supports DisplayPort 1.1a with max. resolution up to 4K x 2K (4096x2304) @ 30Hz" --- [https://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/Beebox%20Series/index.asp#Specification] So it appears the machine has some hardware limits that are relevant here: "DP to HDMI dongles and DP to DVI dongles are not supported." so make sure you're not using converters or converter cables. "HDMI 1 (4K/2K@30Hz) / HDMI 2 (4K/2K@30Hz)" so 2560x1440x60Hz is not supported over HDMI. 1920x1080x60Hz is the highest resolution those HDMI ports can do at full frame rate (presumably 60Hz). Although if you're OK with stuttering then you might be able to select 2560x1440x30Hz. "Supports DisplayPort 1.1a with max. resolution up to 4K x 2K (4096x2304) @ 30Hz" Sounds like it should support 2560x1440x60Hz but only if you're using a cable that is DisplayPort at both ends, because "DP to HDMI dongles and DP to DVI dongles are not supported". This is a problem I'm familiar with... A lot of low-power (but modern CPU) systems are made with graphics connectors that don't allow you to use the full resolution the GPU is capable of. Your best bet sounds like trying more cables that are DisplayPort at both ends. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1767993] Re: Lubuntu: X11 freezing/low resolution on N3150 intel graphics
I've found the problem (or at least got some closer): It's the display port. I'm using a monitor with 2560x1440 pixels, connected with display port. The computer has, although tiny, 2xhdmi and 1xdisplay port outputs. when (without nomodeset) lightdm starts Xorg, it works on the display port with full resolution, but as soon as the session starts, the screen remains black. When I use a HDMI Monitor together with the display port, only console and mouse pointer work, not even a visible login screen. but when I use a FullHD HDMI Monitor only, everything works. Now, when I use my 2560x1440 monitor over HDMI, the session works, but does have FullHD 1920x1080 only and thus is somewhat blurred. Furthermore, there's trouble with the mouse, it behaves crazy as soon as entering an thin area on the left side of the screen. So now I have a slightly blurred 1920x1080 desktop, a troubled mouse, and a display-port-monitor connected with an HDMI cable.
