Using discord application, causes the shell to slowdown and trigger
lots of "unable to lookup icon ..." errors

  [ Test case ]

  Install discord app:
   - snap install discord

Run it, starting a call seems to trigger it more

  [ Regression potential ]

Icons may not be loaded properly, there may be delays between a good
icon and an invalid one (and vice-versa).

  ---

Updated bug #1817073 about this, but it's not really the same since
this does not crash the shell fully.

When speaking in discord there is supposed to be an icon change on the
appindicator and logs spam me with [AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable
  to lookup icon for discord1_40.

The whole desktop freezes for a moment when talking in discord if the
appindicator package is installed.
Easily reproduced by joining a voice channel in discord and just doing stuff
in the gnome ui, watching a video or whatever while talking.

This is pretty bad since it leaves no choice but to uninstall gnome-
shell-extension-appindicator and loosing that functionality if people
wants to use discord on ubuntu.

This is also reported on the extensions github page:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2021-01-10 Thread Goncalves-st
Hi,

I'm using ubuntu 20.04.1 with gnome-shell-extension-app
33.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1, and i'm still experiencing this bug.

Everytime discord registers my voice when in a call, the whole desktop freezes.
if i stay quiet, everything works fine, its just when i speak.
Disabling ubuntu app indicators extension, makes everything fine again.
using the deb version, but doesn't matter anyway, the problem resides in app
indicator.

Checking checking journalctl |grep discord:

jan 10 13:19:24 nix ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com[2319]: unable to update
icon for discord1
jan 10 13:19:26 nix ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com[2319]: discord1, Impossible
to lookup icon for 'discord1_11-panel' in path
/tmp/.org.chromium.Chromium.8NdEEq

loads of that entries. Anything i can do? besides disable the whole extension
ofc.
cheers

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-11-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Since this was declared fixed in Ubuntu 21.04 and 20.10 already it would
mess up the bug tracking to say the same fix isn't good enough in 20.04.
And nobody's saying it's not an improvement. So I suggest we accept it
as is, declare this bug fixed, and then open a new bug about the
remaining performance problem. Because aside from anything else the
upstream bug is also closed so a new one of them would also need to be
opened.

It looks like this was intended to be the fix:

  https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-
appindicator/commit/745c66a73e0

If that's true then perhaps an idler is still too frequent. That could
potentially still use high CPU because it's not throttled in any way.

not be if those messages no longer happen repeatedly.

Title:
appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with
"[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible
  to lookup icon"

Status in gnome-shell-extension-appindicator package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in gnome-shell-extension-appindicator source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

This is also reported on the extensions github page:
  https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/issues/171
  https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/issues/157

Someone also made a video on youtube showing the problem:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-11-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It depends if you see any messages in your system log like this bug
describes. If you see the same messages while the problem is happening
then this bug is not fixed. If you see no messages, or different
messages to what this bug describes then the remaining performance issue
probably needs a new bug.

To check, please:

1. Run these commands in a Terminal window:

   dpkg -s gnome-shell-extension-appindicator > status.txt
   journalctl -f > newmessages.txt

2. Reproduce the remaining issues.

3. Press Ctrl+C in the Terminal window.

4. Attach the resulting text files here.

Why does the issue still occur with the fix? The severity is lessened
but it is still there.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-11-17 Thread Ryan Shaw
After installing the deb (oddly asking me to downgrade to your supplied
version) and logging back in, I was greeted with an error from my HP
printer drivers saying there is no detected system tray and it's unable
to start (attached).

Discord and MegaSync still appear in the tray so I don't know what
that's all about.

The stutter/lag caused by discord still exists but it's MUCH improved.
It's much harder to perceive, but it's certainly still there. I'd
estimate the lags are 5-10x shorter in duration. I am testing on an AMD
5950X CPU so it's not caused by a lack of processing power.

How do I restore the package back to my system maintainers version?

Testing the fix for this one is actually simpler than that. Just
download and install:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-
appindicator/33.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1/+build/20167910/+files/gnome-shell-

Then log out and log in again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-11-04 Thread Pawel K
Slowdown seems to be gone, but after some more testing (error occurs
only during calls with another user as far as I can see) there seems to
be something else in the logs.

ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com[3229]: unable to update icon for discord1
ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com[3229]: discord1, Impossible to lookup icon for
'discord1_1029-panel' in path

Bug description:

I'm also not exactly sure but it seems like the discord icon is blinking
from time to time.

Is the slowdown gone too? We are assuming that was closely correlated
with the logging.

Also please confirm which version of the gnome-shell-extension-
appindicator package you are testing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-10-20 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Linus, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-appindicator into focal-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-
appindicator/33.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

  Confirmed

Bug description:

This is also reported on the extensions github page:
  https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/issues/171
  https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator/issues/157

Someone also made a video on youtube showing the problem:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABavT7yXlso

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1849142] Re: appindicator extension slows down GUI spamming the log with "[AppIndicatorSupport-FATAL] unable to lookup icon ..." or "Impossible to lookup icon"

2020-06-22 Thread Maxim Therrien
I reported this issue on the GNOME Shell GitLab:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/2908

Thanks to @vanvugt over there for the explanation, this appears to be
the crux of the issue:

> Although the simple act of logging to the disk can also cause such problems.
> If you write anything to the disk more than once every 5 seconds then every 5
> seconds it will block while the kernel (ext4) flushes the journal.

> journalctl -f).

This means that there is a bug in both the AppIndicator extension and
GJS.

AppIndicator should not be erroring out when it encounters this, and GJS
(which provides the native method for log and error output) should not
write to the journalctl log this frequently to avoid huge journal
flushes to disk.
