Same issue on an amdgpu laptop. This is even happening on chromium when disabling the gpu... As if the disabling gpu code does not work. My workaround is to close chromium frequently (closing its x-window rather than normal exit from the browser) and restart it, in order to save all my open tabs. This seems to release the excess memory and CPU that is being hogged by this atrocious piece of software. the new version of Chromium seems to be a disaster when I try to go to full screen in YouTube. It scatters parts of the screen amongst my various virtual desktops and creates a huge mess, forcing me to kill chromium from the command line.
