Title:
  [jammy] gnome-shell memory usage spikes when deleting files in
  Nautilus if dash-to-dock show-trash is enabled

Status in gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  gnome-shell memory usage spikes when deleting files in Nautilus if
  dash-to-dock show-trash is enabled.

  For example if I delete 1500 files in Nautilus then gnome-shell
  suddenly gets 15MB bigger. It does come back down within about 10
  seconds, but still not ideal for performance.

  The same bug does not occur with upstream dash-to-dock so it looks
  like this has been fixed somewhere, but not yet in jammy.

  WORKAROUND:
  gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-trash false

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 22.04
  Package: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock 72~ubuntu3
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.15.0-18.18-generic 5.15.12

  Architecture: amd64
  CasperMD5CheckResult: pass
  Date: Wed Mar  2 14:06:54 2022
  InstallationDate: Installed on 2021-11-05 (116 days ago)

  SourcePackage: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
  UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

Umm yeah, glib doesn't do anything with it:

case PROP_RATE_LIMIT:
  /* not supported by default */
  break;

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1962699] Re: gnome-shell memory usage spikes when deleting files in Nautilus if dash-to-dock show-trash is enabled

2022-03-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears this line:

  this._monitor.set_rate_limit(UPDATE_TRASH_DELAY);

which is only used in ubuntu-dock actually doesn't work. I still get
signal floods of _onTrashChange().

Doesn't seem to be a problem in dashtodock, only ubuntu-dock.

** Also affects: gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid
