I have same problem. I tried sudo apt install xdg-dessktop-portal-gnome and/or disable "Use hardware acceleration when available" from browser. The problem was fixed but not completely. I tried apt install xdg-desktop-portal-gnome and since it was installed I tried reinstall and also rebooted and logged out and back in - none of these options solved the problem. But I found a different solution. Brave was installed before upgrade to 22.04, so I did an apt purge brave-browser and then apt install brave- browser. Hello, I have the following installed: xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is already the newest version (42.1-0ubuntu1). 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. It is still happening and I selected Ubuntu.Xorg for my desktop environment. Chrome completely froze and I had to do a hard reboot. Please advise. In the #25 I said the issue was solved after installing "xdg-desktop-
portal-gnome", but no (It was solved partially)
For me, this issue occurs only at the FIRST Chrome launch (after reboot). If I
close the browser and reopen it, the issue disappears.
The issue also doesn't come back when I do Log Out, only on restart/shutdown.
Below, I test 2 probable fixes commented in this bug thread:
#28: "The problem seems to be related to Chrome apps (Google Chat for example)"
Me: I don't have any Chrome apps and the issue are happening
#29: "Disabling 'Use hardware acceleration when available' from chrome settings
the problem stop happend."
Me: Nope. Again, still happening. I think reopening the browser falls into the
behavior presented above.

Same problem on version 105.0.5195.102. Neither of the proposed solutions solved the problem. Also happening to me with xdg-desktop-portal-gnome installed. Disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available" from chrome settings the problem stop happend. Like I said in #27, look like now in the window to select the file use another browser (not Nautilus) and chrome do not freeze anymore. Additionally it happends to me that with different windows (with different google users) the problem is fixed in one window but still ocurring in another... Restarting chrome making sure that "Use hardware acceleration when available" is still disabled, it fix the issue again. The problem seems to be related to Chrome apps (Google Chat for example) automatically starting. In my case, I uninstalled Google Chat and that fixed the problem. Essentially, if a Chrome app starts before the browser itself, that's when the problem happens. So for example, if you have your browser and chat running already, shutting both of them completely also solves the problem. I can support Douglas' statement #17. I installed the fuse package on my fresh Ubuntu 22.04 and it caused the ubuntu-desktop and xdg-desktop-portal packages to be removed. After this, I started getting weird behavior when uploading files on Chrome. I submitted a bug report to the fuse package here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fuse/+bug/1978310 Reinstalling the ubuntu-desktop-minimal package solved the issues I was having with Chrome. I have emailed pCloud support and they forwarded the problem to Linux tech developers. They told me when it gets fixed they will email me. After I found the freezing I completely rebuilt my Ubuntu 22.04 from scratch and without pCloud installed everything has been normal since then. When I hear fo them, I will forward it to you. I am almost 99% sure that this error was caused by installing pCloud Linux software. Today I rebuilt my computer on Ubuntu 22.04 and did NOT install pCloud Linux and the problem is gone. Running sudo apt install xdg-desktop-portal-gnome resolved the problem on Vivaldi and Chrome on my Ubuntu 22.04 (upgraded from 20.04) machine. It did however introduce another problem as fuse was removed during the installation. .appimages no longer work. I tried the sudo apt install xdg-desktop-portal-gnome, but no luck. Download does not work with Chrome or Firefox. Executing the command indicates 0 upgrades, 0 newly installed and 0 not upgraded. I guess I have the latest version running. I'm using the generic install of 22.04. Ubuntu was working fine before the upgrade. I have the same issue on Windows 11, Chrome/Edge freezing for about 3-4 seconds when you save any file to disk. Hey, Olivier, your proposed solution solves the issue but it changes my file download pop up to generic ubuntu 22.04. I am using a gnome theme and the pop up is not consistent with it. I guess the problem might be with using gnome themes on ubuntu 22.04. Yes, Olivier. You are correct. I tried a VM and didn't observe the problem. However, the problem occurs on real hardware. I cannot observe the problem described here when running the latest stable version of google chrome in a fully up-to-date 22.04 VM. Regardless, if this is a problem that happens in brave or Google Chrome, it should be reported to the upstream projects.
