Most of them were .mp4 videos downloaded from Tik Tok with yt-dlp (https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp) or by right-clicking and using the 'Save as' dialog. Sounds like it might be a decoding failure that doesn't recover. No, I can reproduce it with many different video files. Nothing shows up on the cmdline.
