Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

When one prints to PDF/PS/SVG from Firefox, the filename defaults to
  .pdf or .ps or .svg

These filenames are hidden by default by in GNOME and it is my opinion that
this is a bad practice.
If one forgets to specify a filename then the file is hidden in the user's
home directory. This could potentially be very confusing for a new user to
Linux, Ubuntu, or GNOME. Even I spent a while looking for a file I printed
that I had forgotten to specify a filename for. If it is possible, I would
like to see a default filename of [Window_Title].pdf or at least output.pdf
Might this be suitable for inclusion in the current round of paper cuts?

I also checked the same dialog in Chromium and it defaulted to
  output.pdf

  Information
Package: Firefox (though this may be more related to Nautilus if the 'Print
to File' dialog is a Nautilus component)
  Version: firefox:
Installed: 3.5.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.10.1

Expected operation: default non-hidden filename when printing to file
Actual operation: default filename is a hidden file in GNOME

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 488857] Re: Printing to PDF/PS/SVG defaults to a hidden (.name) filename

2011-12-01 Thread Timothy Arceri
Ok the patch has been accepted upstream just waiting on it to being
pushed to master. If this is to be fixed for Firefox it needs to be
applied to the GDK+ 2 library also as Firefox still uses GTK+ 2 this
might mean the patch needs to be applied to the Ubuntu gtk2 build

** Also affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)

If one forgets to specify a filename then the file is hidden in the user's

Linux, Ubuntu, or GNOME. Even I spent a while looking for a file I printed
that I had forgotten to specify a filename for. If it is possible, I would
like to see a default filename of [Window_Title].pdf or at least output.pdf
Might this be suitable for inclusion in the current round of paper cuts?

I also checked the same dialog in Chromium and it defaulted to
  output.pdf

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 488857] Re: Printing to PDF/PS/SVG defaults to a hidden (.name) filename

2011-11-23 Thread Timothy Arceri
I have submitted a fix upstream but I'm having trouble getting it
reviewed. GTK+ currently has 596 unreviewed patches. Maybe we could get
my patch applied to the Ubuntu build or someone here with connections
can follow it up with the Gnome guys to get it reviewed upstream.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 488857] Re: Printing to PDF/PS/SVG defaults to a hidden (.name) filename

2011-09-17 Thread Timothy Arceri
To be more precise its a bug with the way GTK handles the setting of
output file format to ps or svg

e.g.
gtk_print_settings_set(printSettings, GTK_PRINT_SETTINGS_OUTPUT_FILE_FORMAT,
ps);

See my comment upstream for more detail:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603823#c5
