hal has been deprecated and thoroughly dead for years. It's really not
something you still want to use in 2012.

The proper way to get media key events is to listen for evdev events or
for X11 key XEvents (if you have an X11 program).

what Ubuntu version do you use? hald has been deprecated for years and
should be installed or running and not have to do with keybindings, it
might create the issue...

I am currently on 11.10.   When the media-keys cease to function, I just
issue sudo hald and I get them back working.  Didn't know 'hald' was
deprecated.
